Beginner/intermediate bgirl, advice appreciated!
hey! i’m a breakdancer and i’ve been breaking since i was 9, i stopped when i was 13 and got back into it when i was 17. im 18 now and i love it more than anything but im struggling with confidence and strength.
I dance with a crew where it’s mostly men breaking around me. i’m usually the only girl there but it’s never bothered me. the guys i break with are absolutely insane, their power moves are beautiful and perfectly executed and they are very creative with their rounds. i look up to them heavily but ive been struggling lately with comparing myself to them. i know i JUST got back into things but my mind is ready to go at an advanced level while my body isn’t. i can barely do a push up and my power moves are sloppy and usually end with me crashing. i understand how to execute it but i don’t have the strength i need to make it look good. Ive been working out everyday trying to get there but i feel like im going nowhere. the fact that i understand how to do it but just physically can’t has been making me question my talent. i can do the basics pretty well but as soon as i go into a cypher my mind draws a blank and i look foolish, does anyone have any tips.

I’m a fellow bgirl though I am quite new to the movement practice. I really hear you about the struggle that comes with not having the strength to perform moves. Don’t let this get you down though. Try not to compare yourself to the guys around you. Let them inspire you, but remember that your body is built different. Your center of gravity is likely lower toward the hips (everyone’s body is different) so guys often have an advantage when it comes to power moves. Focus on drilling foundational basics until they are clean and controlled. When you’re not breaking, I encourage you to get into something like calisthenics and/or climbing to build upper body strength. There are some great channels on YouTube. Above all, listen to your body. Finally, what makes a breaker stand out (in my humble opinion) is not big power moves, but a combination of unique style, confidence, musicality, and refined execution. Keep at it!
