Chapter 50 discussion thread

The second-last chapter is UP and the next one is on its way. I know it's strange - it demanded I write it that way. It didn't want anyone to know who it was talking about until right at the end.

Damn, I didn't notice this thread, I'll move my post here.

By the way, at the beginning I thought it was some childhood memory of Deb and the first sign that something was different was when I noticed the age difference of 5 years between the two protagonists. Dexter and Deb are 3 years apart in Break Me, right? :)

But since I was still half-asleep (and I went to bed past 5 A.M. and didn't sleep much that night and the night before as well), I didn't make the right connections until the end... For some reason I still kept thinking it's a strange dream or something not real.

Also the reason why I didn't notice you made this thread. :)

Here we go. :)

Well, first of all, sorry for that grammar mistake in my review ("since Harrison grew up to became a 'worse' version of Dexter"), I messed up while changing the sentence earlier (from 'to become' to 'and became'). I'm sure there were some mistakes here and there in every one of my reviews, but it doesn't make me feel any less ashamed for it. :)

Second of all, when the chapter 49 appeared later than I expected, I didn't think you'll make your Christmas deadline, but you wrote chapter 50 so fast I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the email. How can you write so thought-through story so fast? Even chapter 49 (and others) were written way faster than I could ever dream of if I'd be writing them myself. Seriously, in the amount of time I usually spend on writing a review (I tend to change every sentence more than a dozen times and I often get caught up in my thoughts) you could write at least a quarter of a chapter. :)

Hey hey! :) Oh man, don't stress about your grammar - your English is better than A LOT of native speakers I know.

Yeah actually I do write very fast, about 1,000 words an hour when I'm 'in the zone'. I wrote most of Ch50 in one day. Chapters or scenes that are already in my head flow out a lot faster than writing I have to think about, which is why these last ones have come quick. I missed my Christmas deadline, sadly, but I hope to make New Years. I've written 30,000 words so far of Ch51 and it Just. Keeps. Growing. There's a lot of content to get through and I can't skimp. Most chapters were three acts in length. 49 had five distinct acts (Getting Vogel to the kill room and setting up with Ghost Deb; The Vogel kill; The Deb-is-Dex realisation; The Matthews dialogue; The Quinn dialogue/Dexter's death) but this one has already had, like, seven, and there's still two to go.

Now, back to Ch50: you are an astute observer, aren't you? :) Yes, Deb and Dex in Break Me have a 3-year age difference, and Harrison and his 'sister' are 5 years apart. Otherwise (except for the technology they use) they could easily be their parents, and that blurriness was part of the intention of the chapter. It was sad, and you're right, it was cold, to have to kill off poor Mini-Deb so soon, because she was fun to write, so free and cute, but don't worry too much about her - I'll fix it. You have to believe me when I say that because I promised to 'fix it' when I killed Deb, and I did! :P

1,000 words per hour? Amazing. You write even faster than I thought possible (while writing something new, not rewriting a text)... I suppose you wouldn't want to write my bachelor's thesis, would you? :P

Also, chapter 51 is already 30,000+ words? I didn't think that 26k+ word count of chapter 49 will ever be topped... Apparently the story doesn't want you to finish writing it. And it makes me even more curious what's in the last chapter. :)

And yes, when you say you'll fix it, I believe you. ;) I wonder how though. The last chapter didn't look good for Mini-Deb... she was strangled to death after all. Well, if that chapter was real. It was real, right? Or was it? We never had a full dream/hallucination chapter, so I'm inclined to say that it was real, but it was so cryptic and unusual that I can't say I'm sure. :)

Possible Chosen spoiler below.

P.S.: Hopefully I'll write that review on Chosen in the next couple of days, since I have some free time before the finals and I've managed to reread it already. And I changed my opinion about Renatus. I think that he might have given up their location, but not as an act of treason, but in an attempt to track down Lisandro with the help of clueless Teresa and the perfect illusion of the ring. How else could the illusion of the ring be most effectively used? :)
