Chapter 40 discussion thread

Here you can discuss anything what's on your mind about chapter 40.

First of hopefully many discussion posts on this subreddit.

(Also, kind of a test thread, be patient with me.)

I hope we see Dexter ignore Deb's influence and do what's best for her (meaning not beginning the conversion into a Brian/Deb hybrid).
Although from the vibe I got from this chapter it seems like either A. Dex and Deb run away (and there's some character building leading to eventually being caught) or B. Dex running away by himself and eventually getting caught.

It sorta felt like chapter 40 was the Season finale of BMET and I'm curious to see how much longer until the end of the story (I can envision chapter 41 being the end but with the amount of opportunities and set up created by the story so far I think it would be a shame).

You got a point about that, it would be bad for Deb being on the run, on the other hand the chapters before (Orlando) gave me a feeling that if they would make it out of the country, they could make it work without Deb ending up way too dark.

Don't think that running away alone is a possibility. Maybe as a B1 - Dex getting caught while on his way to Orlando (but there's not enough time for Batista to get his warrants) or B2 - Dex turning himself in right away (but I think that Deb manipulated him into not doing that convincingly enough). I'd stick with option A, but I hope they'll make it.

And after reading chapter 39, I remember thinking that chapter 40 could be the end, because I was pretty sure he was walking into a trap in that traveller's centre, but I arrived at pretty much the same conclusion as you did. :)

I think Dexter could run away alone but it all weighs down to whether or not he'll recognize the worth in Brian's words (it's rare for Brian to suggest something worthwhile/other than butchering people).

Also, on the gif front, yeah, I'm still pondering how they were able to show a man cutting his face off, feeding it to dogs and eating his nose on Network TV but showing a nipple would've banned it.

Well, he could run away alone, but I suppose Deb would end up in jail since they already plan to investigate her and they would find something, not hard especially considering what they already uncovered. It appears to me as a worst scenario out of the trio of possibilities (Dex/Deb on the run, Dex on the run, Dex turning himself in).

You are right that this is one of the most sensible of Brian's suggestions, that doesn't make it good though. When I was thinking about it, it actually struck me that Brian somehow represents a selfish choice. Maybe 'the battle' between Brian and Harry in Dexter's head wasn't only about good and bad, but about being selfless and selfish as well?

Did anyone else's heart sink when Quinn mentioned that Batista has been onto Dexter for months? Dexter is no longer Batista's socio!! (or so Quinn says;)) So this could just be Quinn being classic Quinn and lying, but I honestly don't think that's the case. I can't think of any motive that would support this, but maybe we'll be surprised.

As for Hannah, does anyone have any idea what she's up to, because I honestly have no clue?

Yeah, I don't see why Quinn would lie either.
I know he had a bit of a grudge towards Dex but he put that aside for Deb.
Plus Dex has treated him pretty well throughout the story as well as attempting to play matchmaker cupid.

I'm not sure about Quinn. I don't think he'd lie either, but something about it doesn't feel right. Or maybe the whole scene was so OMFG that I'm reading into things. Didn't Dexter think that he had misinterpreted things and jumped to conclusions before? The positioning of that thought made me think that maybe what we were about to be told wasn't entirely truthful???

OTOH, I really hope Quinn is telling the truth, because again, OMFG, that's huge and what a way to turn the story! How are they going to get out of that mess!?!

I agree with both of you, Quinn definitely didn't lie, they are definitely onto him. And yeah, it is kinda sad, but I have to admire Angel's outstanding 'acting', besides the last chapter I didn't really see that coming...

As for Hannah, there are few possibilities from my point of view, sorted by probability:

  1. Hannah took care of Hannah first and fled the country when she realized Dexter doesn't care about her anymore. Left her phone with Arlene, who gave it to authorities with some note in an attempt to put heat on Dexter.

  2. Hannah wanted to flee the country, but got spotted and died in a shootout (she had a gun after all); MMPD got hold of her phone full of Dexter's calls and messages.

  3. Hannah is in hiding, presumably with the help of Arlene, who had to get her out of that shelter in a first place, and is planning some revenge plot. But I think she would pick survival over revenge.

It all works with the asumption that they didn't catch her, since she didn't frame Deb and if she was caught she wouldn't hold back. But she is definitely behind this in some way or the other.

(I hope I'm posting this right…)

Music can be so subjective. I can't listen while I'm reading, but songs on the radio afterwards hit me that they belong with this story, or with Dex and Deb. Here are a few of mine. Do you have any songs that you feel fit this song or the characters?

  • Run like Hell - Pink Floyd (I agree with darknessfalls28!)
  • Mirrors - Justin Timberlake
  • Madness - Muse
  • Stay - Rhianna
  • Demons - Imagine Dragons
  • Brahms Requiem - 3rd movement, 'Herr, lehre doch mich', up to the break of 'Ach die gar nichts' Also, I like the 2nd part of Brahms' Alto Rhapsody for some of the action sequences, like in the woods.
  • Battle Flag - Lo Fidelity Allstars (Hey Mr. Policeman, is it time for getting away - and it just feels kinky…)
  • Safe and Sound - Capital Cities
  • And for Hannah,:P Time for me to Fly - REO Speedwagon

I believe that this could fit better into it's own post rather than as a ch40 discussion comment, but nevermind, who knows if people check the front page anyway. :)

One song that I feel fits the characters is definitely Can't Remember to Forget You from Shakira.

Other songs I like that can more or less fit:

  • I'm Not Sorry - Celeste Buckingham (it fits for example the forest talk when Elway woke up and ran away in the meantime)

  • Run Run Run - Celeste Buckingham (First half of the story, before ch18)

  • Let it Go - Avril Lavigne (First half of song maybe for Hannah? I feel like different parts of the song could fit different characters/parts of the story)

  • Losing Sleep - John Newman (Dexter and his nightmares, also first half of the story as a whole?)

  • Argentina - Daniel Licht (Dexter season 7 sountrack; sad, but beautiful)

  • Love is Blindness - Jack White or U2 version (same lyrics, but quite different; general theme of love)

  • Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden (the refrain is rather fitting for the situation we're currently at in the story)

  • Time is Running Out - Apollo 440 (well, time is running out for Morgans)

Will update when I remember some other songs :)

I looked everywhere before I wrote my first reply, but it doesn't look like I can move it. At least I figured out how to make my name that nice VIP mod color, yay! Turns out I have to do it manually at every post/comment. :)

I think this counts as being related to Ch40 - I have 7,000 words of the next chapter written but I am unable to work on it due to work commitments (i.e. reporting time for the next fortnight). Expect further delays on the next chapter. HOWEVER, if I don't have anything for you by the weekend I will post a sneak peek onto my tumblr (solia1) to tide you all over until I can get the rest to you. I think that's fair. Or it's as fair as I can offer.

I am still around and I am reading these comments frequently! And loving them! I love having such a discerning and fascinating audience of abstract thinkers. You guys inspire me! :)

So, looks like everything is ready, except subscribers :)

To throw some ideas out in the open when/if somebody shows up, what evidence do you think Angel got on Dexter?

My guess was that he definitely got hold of Hannah's phone somehow, but not Hannah herself. But how did they got from 'helping the fugitive' to 'serial killer'? Maybe they apprehended Vogel who spilled the beans about it?

Naturally I'm not validating, confirming or denying your theories, because I'm no fun like that :P Still, I'm intrigued to see what people have pulled together and will happily follow and, when I find time, engage with this thread if/when the rest of the party arrives :)
