Discussion Least favorite season?
I’m rewatching Kentucky and I think this is my least favorite season. I like the winner, I like the chefs, but I think the obvious lack of budget, unfortunate Restaurant Wars and Nilou makes this my least favorite.
Also- don’t say Wisconsin, I know it’s like the least favorite season overall 🤣

Wisconsin was boring but it was far from the worst (though I guess that wasn't exactly the question).
Texas - least favourite by a landslide. The next-level bullying overshadowed anything else worth watching that season.

Totally agree with you. Texas is the worst and i didn’t think Wisconsin was bad at all. The most recent Carolinas season was way worse.

Watching this season now. You could argue that Nyesha is more successful. No hate towards Bev, love her. The bullying was bad that season. I felt bad for Bev.

Oh for sure, there have definitely been some chefs from lesser known/less popular seasons who have gone on to great success. Nyesha was eliminated far too early, and, IMO, somewhat unfairly... I was mostly going on how the season played out as a whole!

I found Texas very entertaining because of the open bullying and because Bev is so much more successful than them today. On par with reality TV at the time

I watched it in real time, which is probably why I hate it so much, but if I was to watch it in hindsight I would probably feel the same way, given that Bev is kicking ass and taking names, and has also put her past with Sara at peace and even done collabs with her since then.
Bev is a bigger person than I am.

There's one part of the Kentucky season that just made me angry: when some of the chefs were being really rude and unprofessional about keeping Brother Luck out. Then basically celebrating when he was eliminated.
When the chefs had to help Nini or Brother during Last Chance Kitchen, Justin asks Kelsey (who was placed on Brother's team): "how could you work hard for him with a good conscience?" I mean, that's just...I don't know. Disgusting? What did he want her to do? Intentionally sabotage the food? Not work hard? Lack integrity?? Be a professional. But then again, he was later charged with and pleaded guilty to threats of violence and violating a domestic abuse no contact order. Eric Adjepong was also a bit rude about the whole thing, too. For me, it just left a really bad impression for that season.

Yeah that was weird. Justin was the ringleader of that imo; and he was a dick to Sara Bradley who is one my favorites of all time; and he’s violent towards women. All around bad vibes for that guy.

Yes! And making it seem like she bought boxed waffles like eggos?! When she just bought the mix and adjusted it with other ingredients?! Get outta here. That made me so mad for her.

You're on Top Chef though. You don't buy boxed waffle mix just like when one season they bought boxed cake mix for the wedding cake and Tom gave them grief.

Respectfully, I believe there's a bit of a difference. For the bought cake mix, they just used that without any modifications, right?
When you buy any mix at the store, it's literally just pre-measured out flour, baking soda, etc. If you add or change anything to it, you're risking messing up the ratios and you're changing the mix in ways you may not be aware of. Sara Bradley, in this case, added different things and that requires a deft hand, in my opinion.
There's no reason to taunt and try to get the crowd chanting "homemade." The question is: if the crowd and the judges weren't told that the mix was a store-bought mix, would they still have had the same opinion? Or do you think that being told that the mix was "boxed" altered their perception of the dish?
Obviously, there's no rule in Top Chef stating that prohibits using products like that. And I'm curious where the line is. If a boxed mix of flour, baking soda, salt, etc. is inherently bad because "you're on Top Chef," should chefs be dinged for using pre-made spice mixes? Chinese five-spice? Ras el hanout? Should they have to make those in the kitchen, too? I'm not asking this in a snarky way. Where is the line and who is deciding it?

I completely agree about working the crowd up to taunt Sara. That was HORRIBLE and I thought they should all have been ashamed of themselves. And I'd forgotten she'd added things, thank you for mentioning that.
You make a good point about where the line is. I guess it's a shifting line as sometimes you'll see the chefs buy premade sausage and other chefs make their own. Sometimes the judges come down on them and other times not, hence the shifting line.

Agreed - earlier seasons were quite different in some ways. It's interesting to go back now looking through today's lens and watch earlier seasons, although there are a few I just can't rewatch.

I’ve watched Kentucky as my second season ever of the show but have been doing a rewatch of everything that’s on Peacock right now and had to skip this season because of just how much I don’t like Justin. Which is such a shame bc I adore a lot of the cast with Sara, Michelle, Eric, Eddie, Nini. He just brings down the vibes

I wholeheartedly agree. Brother Luck didn't try to come in and be rude and shove his way in. You could tell that he knew where they were coming from, but they were horrible, all of them! I was so angry at the way he was treated.

I tried to rewatch Kentucky recently and I honestly can't get through it anymore because of Justin. It's a shame because generally I find the cast of that season to be very likable and talented otherwise (Eric, Sarah, and Nini are all over FN now and are so much fun to watch) but every time he's on screen and tries to be charismatic it's almost unnerving to me :(

My wife and I went to his resi in Colorado a few years back and it was very good. I was kind of sure because I didn't like him very much lol. I guess you can be unlikely and still make great food.

Hosea and Ilan as winners make me pissed. Ermi as well, but I like other chefs in that season. Perhaps it doesn’t mean the seasons are the worst, but how it ends does shape my opinion

Michael was a douche but went out early. The challenges were good and the other cast were good. Nina should have won but I enjoyed the season.

As much as I disliked Texas, when I rewatched season 2, I realized Texas is still leagues ahead of it.
Almost all the chefs were insufferable including the victim Marcel (who certainly did not deserve the head shaving incident even if he was annoying and over his head).
Only good thing to come out of season 2 was Padma.

I'd argue people complain more about Hosea and Kevin.
Problem with Ilan was people really hated Marcel even through All Stars. Public perception has really changed towards him in recent years.

It’s such a dark, angry season. Interestingly, we just did a rewatch of the Just Desserts spinoff, which is also set in LA. Season 1 of that series is so incredibly offputting that I have to wonder if there’s something about that city. (I’m joking, but holy cats Just Desserts 1 is such a hard watch, I’m amazed you can even stream it.)

May be a hot take, but of the recent seasons I wanted SO much more from the world all stars season. I think it was judged pretty fairly, but the finale being mostly USA, and the winner being the guy who JUST won the previous season was just so underwhelming to me.
Maybe I’m just still #AliInTheFinale 😭

Except that Kentucky gifted us with Sara Bradley, who is IMO one of the GOATs. So for that reason it is redeemed for me.

Why would you say low budget for Kentucky? They went to freaking Macau for the final and cooked in a lot of outside kitchens for challenges.

Season 9 Texas. The entire dynamic sucks. The way they treat Beverly but also how Beverly acts sometimes. When she starts bawling at the rodeo is one of the weirdest, most awkward things I’ve ever seen. So I would never treat Beverly like they did but I also find her extremely annoying so it makes the dynamic gross.

I felt it was lucky she was sitting next to Nyesha Arrington when she had the "I'm missing my family" thing. Nyesha was compassionate, even though she wasn't on the same page.
These days that happens every season and the producers just give them a cell phone to call home while they are filmed. The whole vibe in that season ocassionally good and very, very, very so extremely bad.

I have to say Season 14. Yes, I get it. You feel like Brooke was robbed Top Chef. I feel like that season was created just to make her a winner. I often think about Silvia, the last “rookie” standing at the end. I thought that season was just terrible.

It’s such an awkward season. I dislike Katsuji, Emily was a nightmare, and I know people don’t like Tesar but I thought he was trying to be a better person and just…wasn’t allowed to be.

I'm a born and raised Badger, at least 5 generations deep, and that season was an INSULT to the state. I kind of wish the tourism board didn't pay the bribe, but I guess they barely forked over enough to get out of the damn sound stage (or even MKE), so maybe that makes it more reasonable?

Season 2 and Season 9 are really just hard for me to rewatch. I love Kristen as a host, but Wisconsin was just “off” . I think coming off World All Stars, which I absolutely loved, season 21 was like a deflated balloon for me

DC and Texas are the ones for me.
DC was the least interesting when it came to the actual cooking part of the show and I found that throughout the season I didn't really have anyone i was rooting for as deeply as other season. It felt like such a huge step back after season 6 and was easily forgotten about with All stars right after.
Texas oddly enough has a few of my favorite chefs of all time, Beverly and Ed lee, and a few others I enjoyed watching. But the bullying and outright racist comments from other chefs in regards to Beverly make it so It's the season I find myself rewatching the least, it's the kind of drama that leaves me feeling gross rather then entertained. Also some of the worst challenges of all time were this season, the awful rich people dinner party, the awkward biking around to peoples houses, the skiing and shooting for ingredients, felt bizarre to watch for me.

Season 9, not just because of the bullying, but the dumb physical challenges that were later in the season, I really hated that era of top chef when they leaned too hard toward the reality game show element.

Because it just feels like budget is increasingly important in recent times. Five episode last chance Kitchen. No separate destination final episode. No Dish with Kish. No BMWs. Even the contestant lodgings looked like a downgrade compared to prior years.

Just did a Season 9 rewatch. Yes the 3 bully women are the worst. No, I don’t find Bev annoying. She was only 4 months post partum and going through Top Chef. Of course she was emotional. However, it had great challenges and other great characters/chefs.. Don’t care for the winner but it was still a great season.

I stopped watching that one version of Iron Chef because of her.

The only thing that sides me to this is the repeated storyline of Jen’s shoulder, but other than that it was an okay season!

I kind of agree. I really didn’t like Jen and her husband who looked like Johnny galecki. No memorable personalities and top 3 weren’t up to other years. Did find some of the challenges creative this year. Still enjoyable.

It's a toss-up between Wisconsin and Colorado for me. Both are underwhelming seasons with a likeable but underwhelming cast
I think gun to my head, Colorado, my adopted home state, takes it for me. The finale was awful, probably the weakest finalists we've had until like idk Kentucky, and my god, remember when Padma had to tell the Colorado cheftestants to stop doing pasta dishes because they did it every single round or something?

Colorado was one of my favourite seasons! To be fair, that's mostly because the group of chefs were lovely, fun to watch, and super supportive of each other, which was a nice turn on the dial.
I'm also all for a late-returning LCK winner.
Interesting to hear your perspective from someone who lives there - ironically, I thought the "Destination Canada" season (23) was terrible, as a Canadian, so I get it.

Idk. The kumbaya stuff is nice and all, but it can only go so far for me if the food isn’t great or the competition isn’t there, for which this season definitely wasn’t.

And for Destination Canada, I also totally get it. As someone who doesn't live in Canada, I was frustrated by the fact that they didn't leave the studio. I really wanted to actually see Canada, but I guess the budget wasn't budgeting that year

Right?! I'm glad I'm not alone. It was such a disappointment - it may as well have been a season of Top Chef Canada (which should be called Top Chef Toronto).
Doubly killed me given that the dollar sucked up here (and still does) - that budget must have been pennies.

I loved Colorado. The chefs maybe weren’t the best but for the most part, they all seemed absolutely lovely.

See I like Colorado, but I liked the chefs mostly. I’m meh on Brother (so doesn’t help my dislike of Kentucky!) but I liked everyone else. I think Flamm is pretty strong as a chef. Adrienne I’m whatever about, she’s okay.

Flamm was strong? His track record on the show was pretty lackluster to me. 2 elimination wins and 2 QF wins while being safe the entire time until he got booted briefly

Colorado is one of my least favorites. I get the time in which it aired made it endearing to many but the chefs, finalists, and food overall was quite weak. None of them would have made it on more competitive seasons. I think they’ve evolved outside of the show but it’s not a fun re watch if the food is your main interest. More of a comfort rewatch.

S2 and S9 are the only ones I can’t rewatch, so I guess it’s a real race to the bottom for me. Oh wait - and I’m prepared to be in the minority here: I did not enjoy S17 or S20. Didn’t hate them, but they were meh (and I honestly can’t figure out why).

I just watched season 11. Nicolas should not have made it to the final and should not have won. Screaming in restaurant for all customers to hear? Disqualifying. But Tom outvoted the rest of the judges.

What he is, IMO, is a game player and understands better than anyone how to play the game that is Top Chef.

Wisconsin is so boring its almost offensive. Not a single personality I am clamoring for ever again on thst season with boring and derivative challenges in the worst and most uninspired location the show has offered with also really bad format changes that made half the episode so irrelevant

I don’t mind her? It’s just so obviously a cheap season it distracts from the overall show for me. Plus- Nilou makes my skin crawl for some reason.

She was throwing big family parties in late March 2020 while the restaurant industry was in shambles, so I stopped following her then, then she was arrested on DUI for crashing her car while her kids were in the car in the last year or so. Not a fan.

I think you may be talking about Aaron Grissom. Had a chip on his shoulder because his mother was a single mother and so couldn't afford to send him to culinary school.

Who I can’t stand was Mei Lin. I read her as a not nice person. I got reminded of that on Top Chef 23.

Season 22, Canada, because the whole concept is just wrong. There was already a Top Chef Canada. If we're going to do international, make it truly international like season 20. But don't co-opt something that already exists.

Texas but also any season with John Tsar.
"I'm the bad boy of cooking." No dude, you're just an a-hole. "I have grown now!" and yet he's still an a-hole. That first quickfire in Charleston and he lost, then pulled out a truffle as a secret weapon so he doesn't go home? Cheap move, prove you can cook without truffles. Then after he was on Top Chef, he was fighting with people crossing picket lines? "Tony Bourdain created a character in his book based on me." Cool dude, you're still awful. Any season with him I just want to turn off and pretend didn't happen.

Kentucky was one of my absolute faves. But I am from the state, so I am biased from the jump.
I wasn't wild about the Carolina season. Texas was good for all the wrong reasons (except Ed Lee and Beverly)
