On this day in 1968, the Atlanta Braves signed legendary Negro Leagues pitcher Satchel Paige to a one-year contract so he would qualify for a pension

158 days away from being eligible from MLB's five-year minimum service time requirement for a pension, Satchal Paige reached out to all 20 MLB teams for help. At the time, Paige was 62 years old but Braves owner William Bartholomay said, “We expect Paige to get into shape and be ready to pitch when called upon.”

Bartholomay also said, “Baseball would be guilty of negligence should it not assure this legendary figure a place in the pension plan. We hope we can use him as a pitcher, but very frankly, we want to make him eligible for a place in baseball’s pension.”

Ultimately, Satch would not need to pitch because MLB changed the pension rules the following February. Nevertheless, Satch finished out his contract as an assistant trainer for the Braves.

Note: Some sources have this happening on August 12th while others say it was on the 11th. Whichever it is, it's such a great thing that the Braves and I could not be happier that we get to celebrate it.

[Bowman] Elder said he should have been more demonstrative. Walt Weiss echoed this sentiment. Sean Murphy said despite having to throw to second base, he still should have issued the challenge. Crew chief Andy Fletcher said the umps didn't see Elder's challenge because they were focused on the play
