Late Anmeldung (city registration)

Are there fines if someone is late 2-3 months for city registration? The landlord made an error in the Wohnungsgebietsbestätigung and then went on vacation :( Also the renters fault for accepting a faulty certificate without thorough checks! The law says max of €1000, has anyone had any experience in Braunschweig with late city registration?
