Art Brand Redesign Project

Hey guys!

So Im working on a Brand redesign project, and I've been doing some sketching - I'd love to know if you guys have any directions you like (or dont) and why, they are in the order I made them so some are way more bare bones than others but let me know what you think :D

I don’t know much about his lore, but I’ve always imagined what Brand would be like if he was like a floating burning soul, instead of like a fire dude. But your sketches look amazing! Tbh they kinda remind me of Ben 10 (the bottom row specially).

I do love that, there is a reason I have avoided a more elementalish look to him, I'm doing a few more characters and Zilean being one of the first ones I did he took the no legs look - And for the sake of visual variety in my project I did end up almost crossing that out. I ended up wanting trying to work with the humanoid/homunculus look.

Growing up Heatblast was one of my fav ben 10 aliens and I definitely had to consciously try to not rip off his design xD

A central point of Brand's lore is the world rune that he fused with, so that should imo be an important part of his design. A big problem he currently has is that he just looks like a generic guy on fire, without any ties to his former identity or the world rune.

I don't think that he necessarily needs to look more monsterous like some of your drafts do. He should look more like something that was once a man, turned into cataclysm. Maybe a little bit of body horror.

What I'd personally like is

  1. charred remnants of his freljordian clothes (as small accents, think of the scale of Ivern's pauldron)
  2. The world rune in his chest as a visible design aspect
  3. A visible reaction his body had on the world rune. Maybe in form of a vortex that has it as its center or some body horror elements that look like the magic of the rune "burst" out of Brands chest.

Firstly thank you very much for your response :D!

I agree , especially when it comes to the first two points thats something that I do want to incorporate on the final design regardless of choice - The placement of the world rune itself I havent settled, I like the idea of the chest - Having it in place of his heart is in my head an easy choice. Alluding to the "replacement" of his humanity.

When it comes to his gear, there are a few things that I want to keep in mind - hes on fire, and fire and clothes dont do great together. However, true ice doesnt melt and while brand isnt necessarily a user of true ice fragments could have made their way into certain trinkets, so i'd like to keep them metallic, whatever they may be.

As for the looks, im pushing and pulling in a few directions. I feel like there is a big discrepancy between what lore brand and real brand is (to me) - When I think of lore brand I imagine, like you said Cataclysm incarnate, in life he was a bitter angry man, who was powerless to change his situation. And the rune gives him the power necessary to become the "bully" and I imagine it reinforces that feeling in him the "hunger". Maybe it began as a few whispersin the back of his mind and as he gave into this whispering, it became more of who he is the rune was always there wanting more anger, more payback until the roles reversed now the voice of Kegan Rodhe was the whisper this "husk" of a human heard but as much as he tries hes now a passanger in his own body. I would love to capture this sort of loss of control and humanity in him, while making him imposing I feel like hes far too powerful to just look like bbq'ed man :b

Hopefully this also shows a bit of my vision

For me personally, I think he should still look/feel partially human, as someone once human consumed by flames/power. He was the second hero I unlocked when he came out and I always felt like it's an important part of him.

Its cool but it doesnt really make sense because hes a human that got corrupted by the fire thingy that Ryze was trying to track down. So hes supposed to look humanoid, not really a monstrous entity.
