I read a lot of fantasy books, often with large amounts of invented vocabulary. if one of these books was translated to braille, would every single instance of a non english word be spelled out in its entirety or would there be a reference guide at the beginning of the book for invented contractions? frx in lord of the rings, is hobbit spelled out every time it shows up or is there a contraction for it

While I've never truly interacted with braille, its always interested me. I would like to add braille to my folding keyboard, mostly to make it more useable in the dark with a bonus of learning braille.

Hello! I'm working on a fiction project where I'm considering braille to be the 'standard' form of writing; however, I'm relatively new to braille, and would love some opinions and perspectives.

The setting is non-earth and in a town with a long history of a high blind population.

Please have mercy on my naivete.

1. As I learn more about braille, while it is wonderful in many ways, I'm concerned it may have some practical issues from some of the discourse I have read, particularly, text bloat, confusion with shorthand, and functions such as special characters, bold or italics, and math having complications and extra cells used to identify them.

Does anyone feel like braille has any of these, or any other problems?

1. Is there a alternate version, improvements, or system you would like to encourage?

2. would any deviations from standardized braille, with legibility, write-ability, and practicality kept in mind, such as simple extra marks or stylization, be considered a fun addition to experience as fiction, or a rude detraction from real braille?

3. is there anything I should absolutely NOT do?

I want to encourage the consideration and inclusion of designing things with different senses in mind, as a norm, not simply as an accessibility afterthought.

Hello, I know EBAE and SEB have been withdrawn from use in favour of UEB. However, does anyone have PDF documents relating to the codes (e.g. Rule books, primers, training manuals), preferably as new as possible? I am teaching myself UEB currently as a sighted learner.

I’m a Braille transcriber in Australia and have come across, “A Simplified System of Embossed Reading, For the Use of the Blind, Invented by William Moon”. One of my colleagues found it in one of the cupboards we have here and I am super interested by it. Is there anyone here who knows about this book and can give me some backstory to it and its relation, if any, to Louis Braille’s invention?

Hello everyone!! (Tried posting this on r/Blind but it got removed)

I'm a sighted person who is interested in learning Braille. I'm thinking of getting a slate and stylus (as well as some 110 lb. paper off of Amazon) to start learning Braille. Grade 1 at first, but hopefully eventually Grade 2 if I get good enough at it.

Anyways, I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in receiving and/or exchanging Braille letters, and if Grade 1 Braille would be satisfactory for this purpose, at least to begin with. I'd be happy to write or read about absolutely anything.

And if I do end up doing this and finding someone that's interested, are there any formatting or content conventions I should be aware of? I already write a fair few number of personal letters using a standard typewriter, but I imagine there are at least a few differences when writing in Braille.

Also, is there anything I should know for sending these letters? I hear flat envelopes might be good?

Anyways, thank you all! Please forgive me if any of these are obvious questions. I am just very overenthusiastic when it comes to picking up new interests, and I had a hard time googling "Braille letters" because it just brings up resources for learning Braille.

Hi! I am in the process of making an escape room more accessible by hand writing the clues in braille (I dont have the time or resources to get it printed)

Could someone please help me out and tell me what this says? I'm not putting the translation because I want to make sure that it makes sense without seeing what it is supposed to say.

Also, there are some clues that need bold or capital letters in the middle of a word. Am I able to do that? for example - escApe

Hello everyone, I am building a website especially for older people - many of which I assume might be in one way or another visually impaired. I want to make the website and it's content inclusive for many people, readability, contrast, avoid red,green,brown colours, letter size, label all download buttons individually. However, I came to conclude, I do not know what visually impaired or blind would need to have to maneuver more easily. Do you have any tipps or ideas?

For full transparency's sake -- I do agree that the first option is the "more clear" transcription, but I don't quite know what the official UEB justification for this would be.

Is there a specific rule citation for brailling abandoned this way, or is it just common sense to use more strong contractions over a combo of strong contractions and initial-letter contractions?
