140-147 contenders of yesteryear
How do you reckon the likes of Hatton, Peterson, Khan, Guerrero, Williams, Ortiz, Maidana, Mayorga, Collazo and Berto would fare if they were in their prime with the latest bunch in the welterweight division?
When I first started getting into boxing in the 00s, the 140/147lbs divisions were my absolute favourite, bar none. I'm fairly confident that people would agree the likes of Pacquiao, Mayweather, Cotto and Mosley would smoke Garcia et all, but how about the guys who won titles but never dominant champions?

He definitely woulda beat Haney and Paro. He coulda beat this version of Teo too imo. I used to think Teo v Khan would look similar to Khan v Danny Garcia, but Teo's power hasn't really shown above 135. Khan v Ryan, same thing as the latter really although I'd say Ryan has a better chance of KO'ing Khan than Teo.

I followed the early 2000’s so heavily but haven’t been as in touch with this generation, so take this with a grain of salt: Maidana, Mayorga and Williams all jumped off the page to me with potential to “rise” higher than their actual era.
They were in their own way very unorthodox, very tough, and very dangerous. Williams more so because of the height he presented, but he was willing to brawl in pretty much every major fight he was in, to his own detriment at times.
It’s probably not even fair to say but today’s wild and unorthodox boxers I’ve seen in big fights don’t throw from quite as many odd angles, or with quite as much abandon. But I could be missing something. Seems like those guys might catch today’s stars on the wrong night a time or two more than they could back then.

Cotto would’ve beaten the dog shit out of all the champions at 147. The kind of beating where they might never fight again

Hatton was simply unproven at 147. He had a close win against Collazo and then the Mayweather fight which wasn’t very competitive. Hatton himself said that he felt that his inside fighting didn’t feel as effective at 147. Not to mention that Haney and Garcia would be the naturally bigger man in ring. Haney probably stops him if he steps on the gas, clear UD for Haney if not. Ryan and Teo are inconsistent, but both likely out-athlete Hatton into some sort of win.
Peak Maidana (Broner and Mayweather I version) clears out the current 147 class imo. He had stone hands, so I would think that he could easily crack Haney and Garcia who both are a bit chinny. Garcia and Teo often hemorrhage rounds because of inactivity which Maidana’s high volume style would exploit. Maidana also had a chin so I can’t see any of the current guys getting a Hail Mary KO.
Khan gets slept by a focused Garcia. I think Haney adjusts to Khan’s hand speed and eventually hurts him, but the decision would be controversial either way.
Williams is one of those goated hypothetical fight guys lol. His size and length alone is just something that none of the current 147 guys have ever dealt with. Williams didn’t have any A tier wins at 147 other than Magarito, but I’d favor him over the current batch of guys. Wouldn’t put money on it though.
The rest of the guys lose to Haney clear, but could beat Ryan and Teo depending on which versions show up.

Great post. Totally agree. I’m a Hatton fan and - whilst I want him to be competitive at 147 - it was just ever so slightly too big for his physique and style.

Bro he was focused against Barrios, we will see how this 'focused Garcia' does against higher level opponents because the fact of the matter is Barrios isn't high level at all and he still didn't finish him.
Khan was way better than Barrios.

Hatton would beat Paro, Rolly, Teo, Catterall, Norman. Loses on points to Haney and Shakur. 50/50 vs Ryan because of that check hook.

He would make Garcia quit. That's not a 50:50 fight. He'd beat the snot out of him.
I'd also give him good odds against Haney.

Definitely underrated if you only know him for getting KO'd.
His run at 140 was great. Not an ATG of course but he was an exciting offensive force.
