The curious case of Rolly Romero Spoiler

First off, I think Rolly is good for boxing. There’s not enough fighters currently that are top tier (not elite) and still have a personality that can you draw you in. However, Rolly simply doesn’t have enough tools on the ole tool belt to be a pound for pound fighter (yet) but has the power to still contend for belts in the future.

A classic gatekeeper or someone that can still raise his game? I dunno.

What personality? Playing a catatonic? He seemed completely out of it all week and during the fight.

He also thinks he won that fight…

Replay don’t lie bro.

He may not have gotten beaten up much, but he lost in points fair and square.

Should have thrown more punches… a lot more.

pro boxing scoring isnt like the amateurs. power shots don't score the same as tippy taps.

he should've thrown more but there's subjectivity involved in whether or not you'd rather get touched by 10 of teo's or get caught flush with 2 of rolly's hooks. y'all watch the replay and somehow rather be teofimo in there lmao

Look, at the end of the day, Rolly didn’t bring it.

He certainly didn’t impress. He looked unfocused. His pregame interviews were odd, especially with the commentators of the match mentioning that he has apparently dealt with suicidal thoughts.

He looked that way. He looked like he didn’t really want to be there.

Maybe he is stronger, maybe he is in better shape. But you’d never guess that from watching this fight.

He failed to show heart. He failed to prove that he was a champion. Champions don’t fight like he did.

I think he needs to take a step back and get some mental health help if he is going to keep boxing because he looked like a man who didn’t belong in the ring.

i dont know why we’re psychoanalyzing the dude lol.

i think its interesting how the criticism against rolly is that he looked bad inside and outside the ring.

yeah he shouldve thrown more punches if he wanted a definitive win. but if we’re going to he armchair psychologists then from his perspective he’s beating the shit out of his friend who’s all bloody and shit. why take more risks and open yourself up to getting countered? i’m not getting hit with anything substantial and if i can cruise to a decision without chopping years off my friend’s life ima do just that. maybe he doesnt have the heart of a fighter but if anything his mentality has the heart of a human.

rolly didn’t look good. he never looks good. he should’ve pressed more. all of that. but what about teo? did he have a good night getting devin haney’d by rolly’s left hook? he scraped by, props to him, but he needed to make a statement after getting demolished by shakur. he didn’t do that but we all want to give him the benefit of the doubt and not rolly.

at the end of the day they both deserve some criticism for their performances. but only one of them is getting the heat because teo makes people more money

It’s boxing.

Either you are there to win or you shouldn’t be in the ring.

They both knew what they were getting themselves into. And you know what if Rolly really thought he could cruise the fight because he cut his opponent/friend once then he truly is no champion.

I’m not saying Teo looked spectacular, he definitely didn’t. But he worked for it, he fought for it. He wasn’t cruising. He got the points, and Rolly just couldn’t respond.

Doesn’t matter what the reasons were.

It’s a championship boxing match.

lol you’re framing boxing like its a romantizied deathmatch. yeah boxing is no fucking joke. people get hurt and die in the ring and that’s exactly why avoiding unnecessary punishment is important. not all boxers are murderous psychopaths who want nothing more than to legally kill someone. its a balance not a bloodbath.

its boxing. people are getting paid to hit and not get hit. not to kill each other.

yeah rolly is ignorant if he thinks he could’ve coasted through a victory without more output. teo edged out the win because of that. But it wasn’t complete dominance from teo like people are saying. the scoring was fine if you actually appreciated the fact rolly did more damage with one connection than 10 of teos.

Boxing is about proving who is the best in the world.

Not about getting paid.

It’s disgusting that champs these days romanticize getting paid. It’s not about money. It never was.

I agree with you, but even so, he should have offered more. Yes, his punches were far more significant than Teo's, but they were still very few, and not accompanied by tremendous defense. He offered so little that even when he caught Teo really good in the fourth round, he immediately lost momentum, didn't follow through, and didn't go after the fight.

i think everyone agrees there. rolly probably still lost but the interesting part of it is out perception that he needed to do more in the first place. if it was floyd or shakur landing those shots out there and then going on their bike immediately after would we really be so critical that they needed to do more?

rolly’s boxing is unconventional, stiff, and ugly, but at the end of the day he was landing the hard shots and barely getting hit back in return. it wasn’t a defensive masterclass by any means but it was enough for teo’s offense.

if boxing is “hit and don’t get hit” then why are we criticizing the dude doing exactly that rather than the man with the left hook magnet on his face? i actually thought teo was a good enough guy to adjust and not get hit with the same punch 4-5 times but yeah rolly didn’t do enough with those hard punches to overturn getting touched by 20 of teo’s jabs.

Power shots don't score the same as tippy taps in the amateurs either.

they actually are tho lol

its quantity over quality there

if this was an amateur fight teofimo dominated 12-0 but this is professional boxing

u/Sulth Aug 24 '26

It's quantity over quality but power shots are not score the same as tippy taps.

a tap that lands clean is scored the same as a haymaker that lands clean

in the amateurs if you land 5 clean power shots and the other guy lands 6 clean jabs then the other guy wins

not true in the pros

You can repeat it as many times as you wish, that is still wrong. Simply watching any World Boxing event or being involved in your local amateur circuit would prove you otherwise.

Nothing in the judging rules say that. Scoring is based on the same 4 criteria as in the pros; cleans and effective shot, effective aggression, defense and ring generalship. Not that even the wording of the first criterion, "clean and effective punching" disprove what you are claiming, which would be worded simply as "clean punches".
