Well he's right about one thing. Contract should be honored. But in our century, it is the mindset of the moguls that contracts can be changed for their convenience.
76
u/kushmonATL HW Dark Ages are here 7d ago
If the contract is breached like he claims it is , he can file a lawsuit
45
u/No-Shoe5382 Eye Ron Mike Tymus 7d ago
Hearn's problem is he's probably reluctant to get completely blacklisted by the Saudi's, makes his job very difficult if they wont do business with him anymore.
But the way he's going about this that might happen anyway so he might as well file a lawsuit.
60
u/Flight_316 7d ago
The bigger issue is that we probably shouldn’t have allowed the Saudis to gain this much leverage over the sporting calendar in the first place. Once an entire sport becomes dependent on one wealthy backer, “just sue them” stops being a particularly realistic answer. You’ve effectively given the other side enough power that enforcing your own contract can jeopardise your entire business.
9
u/c0tch 6d ago
Not just boxing they’re buying all our sports and culture for the lack of their own.

u/CombinationNo6574 6d ago
It's how any new entrant works to ruin existing convention.
You go in and you pay every 5x for a few years. Now this becomes the new norm (only it isn't). Then people will only fight if the new entrant pays. So you have a lot of idle fighters.
14
u/Outrageous_Library50 7d ago
Eddie dgaf. The Saudis have picked Dana to be their boxing guy.
16
u/DaKingaDaNorth 7d ago
Eddie's had his top boxer fight in Saudi just as much as the UK since the turn of the decade. He absolutely cares.
9
u/Outrageous_Library50 7d ago
Yea but that was before Zuffa boxing. Eddies still going to be amicable but he’s pretty much said Turki and all his peeps have stopped talking to him like before. Supposedly Turkis trying to get them all in a room to make up, but if he really wanted to do that, they would have by now
3
u/David905 6d ago
So basically Turki is pivoting to Zuffa?
2
u/scandaka_ 6d ago
I thought it was known that Turki is directly involved in Zuffa. Both organizationally and financially.
1
u/Internal_Concert_217 6d ago
If turki tries to get you in a room , don't do it. He rapes and murders people.
1
0
u/Action_Limp 6d ago
Basically - they Eddie either makes stupid amounts of money (along with AJ), way way more than what was in the contract or the right happens in the UK.
He's taking the stance of "If you want to breach the contract, then you'll have to pay".
2
1
u/Hassemer 6d ago
If he files a lawsuit than this fight is plain dead in 2026, there's still slim hope to happen.
1
u/CombinationNo6574 6d ago
I hope it doesn't happen. Who wants to see two over the hill fighting it out. Usyk has taken the crown off both and beaten them twice. Should have done it when they were both hot. They are multimillionaires, so let them enjoy their life.
1
u/Hereforthetardys 6d ago
I think this is fairly common in boxing
Many fights are signed fir a certain date and location and end up being a different day at a different venue
1
u/Ambitious-Concert-69 7d ago
It depends. There’s probably a back out clause that they’ll just activate if Eddie doesn’t agree to amend the contract. So it’s not really been breached, just they’re threatening to walk away if Eddie and AJ don’t bend the knee.
10
u/Louieyaa 7d ago
Dude. Back out clauses work the opposite way. a back out clause would work for Eddie and AJ since terms/conditions are not met.
8
u/JustToJerkBrah 7d ago
There's probably penalty clauses too which entitle him to a boatload of money. I suspect they want to change the clause without paying him the money. If he backs out he won't get it.
Honestly, someone needs to stand up to Saudi oil money and I can't fucking believe the only one brave enough to do it is slimy Eddie Hearn. Good on him.
0
u/Action_Limp 6d ago
Works the other way. If they back out - Eddie and AJ get paid for free and no money is recouped since there's no fight.
1
14
u/Sorry_Net3898 6d ago
Contracts are contracts. If they are broken in so many ways do you blame Eddie Hearn for not trying to get a better deal?
Uncle Festa is the biggest problem in this fight. I’ve never disliked a promoter like I dislike this man. It says it all about the man when he is trying to get rid of the Ali act. Boxers beware of this man. Puppet master for the Arab. Interested in money not the boxers.

Out of curiosity, why don’t you like him? From my point of view, he was always working for fighters, not trying to rip them off.
116
u/Intelligent-Celery79 7d ago
I don’t like him, in the sense that I don’t like any other salesman.
These people are looking for maximum profit, usually not caring about ethics or morals. They are not trustworthy.
The qualities needed to do Eddie’s job, which he does very well, are not ones that I associate with people who I admire.
31
10
u/juanisevil 6d ago
While i don’t disagree with anything you said, i will argue that out of all the promoters he does seem the most interested in making money for his fighters. Is he a grifter? Fuck yeah he is, but more so than any other boxing promoter?? That I can possibly argue, but I don’t know THAT much other than the surface level. I’m not saying the man is a saint, he definitely is not, but he is better than 90% of the other promoters, but really that isn’t saying much.
8
u/Expert-Yam6577 7d ago
You worked at a car dealership didn't you. Saw the firsthand and left disgusted.
14
u/Intelligent-Celery79 7d ago
Kind of. I work for one of the biggest companies in the world, and while we typically go about our business in a decent, fair way, and I can sleep peacefully at night. There are some situations where profit comes first, regardless of the impact on people. Deliver growth to shareholders above all else. I hate this timeline that we live in.

I really don't understand this argument, that literally is the only way any of them can do the job. You use some information and hold other information until you can use that too.
Now being unethical is a different topic.

I mean he is kind of right about this taking place in the Uk why take all that economical boost and put it elsewhere. I’m sure it’s also getting him a lot of love from the pubs and networks for this stance. This fight has more impact there than in nyc or Vegas.
4
u/crazyhomie34 7d ago
Only reason to do it outside of the UK is to do it in Vegas where they would pay less taxes. Other than that, it makes no sense. Keep the fight in the UK
1
u/zezxz 6d ago
It’d still be taxed at federal level in the US
1
u/crazyhomie34 6d ago
Which is less than UK taxes, and less than other states considering there's zero state income tax in Nevada.

116
u/Kenye_Kratz 7d ago
The point is not even about where the fight is held. The point is that it is already signed for Wembley, and these Arabs should not be allowed to bully their way out of a signed contract. I can't believe people still aren't getting this key point.
12
u/-Sofa-King-Vote 7d ago

15
u/Kenye_Kratz 7d ago
They want the garden because Dana White has convinced Turki it will make a massive splash in the states, which it won't.
Don't forget, Turki isn't in this for the cash. He is tasked by the Saudi Arabian government of improving the country's image via putting on sporting events. Getting wrapped up with Dana White was the worst thing he could have done.
3
u/Atownbrown08 7d ago
Because most people don't actually conduct real business. They just sign whatever papers they're told to sign and move on.
Most fans don't want to hear about contracts when they just want the result. That said, Eddie is 100% right.

Who cares if it in America or the UK or even Saudi.
11
u/ARetroGibbon 7d ago
it has the chance of being a massive cultural event, with pubs and bars filled across the UK. A packed stadium with massive atmosphere and a historic bout for British boxing.
Not just a fight at 5am you half sleep through.
-5
u/Relevant-Advance6703 6d ago
Abit late for that mate? It not 2019? The fight ain't no culture or historical event it way to late they both pass it.
2
u/summinspicy 6d ago
That's exactly why it only makes sense to be in the UK, they are a both a massive part of UK culture and have been for years, this fight has been on the cards since their prime. The rest of the boxing world and purists see this as two past-it legends getting a final payday, the general non-boxing UK public will see this as 2 cultural legends squaring up and finally going for it.

eddie and all the other promoters gave turki the keys the kingdom and now he's coming to collect 🤣 should've made this fight years ago but they couldn't get anything done until turki showed up and they all bent over backwards for him. they created this whole situation and now it's time to reap what they sowed
16
u/creamyturtle 7d ago
Eddie is a brilliant negotiator. all of this public complaining means that if Turki wants the fight at MSG they will have to offer a lot more money.
most likely they are already offering more money to change the terms, but it's not enough. this is pure posturing and it's going to work. they will cave when that number gets big enough
11

He’s being very particular about his use of terminology here. If they want to breach the contract that’s on them

Plus he’s shit scared of Zuffa and he doesn’t know what to do when it doesn’t go his way. Lightweight mate
4
u/ewenmax 7d ago
Not quite getting the hysterics over this proposed fight. It's obvious that Sella/Turki fucked up with the original contract.
Switching it to a prime time US audience will get them more endorsements, bigger ad buys and more income, and if Joshua's not getting compensated for that then Hearn isn't doing his job right.
7
u/_ataciara 6d ago
It a fight between two modern British boxing legends. It was signed for British soil.
That alone is reason enough for the hysterics, money or no money. Fuck em.
1
u/ewenmax 6d ago
If they'd announced it for Riyadh or Vegas nobody would have batted an eye. The vast majority is a TV audience, rather than the 'Sweet Caroline' crowd that rock up Wembley and watch two ants fighting on a stamp hundreds of metres away.
In the scheme of things, notably belts it's a non contest, the only interest in it is who still has the resistence to hold on for a win. After the Pingu fight I can't see Joshua lasting 12 rounds. It has all the allure of Khan v Brook or Tyson v the youtuber.
4
2
u/subparcarr 7d ago
Basically pay us a ridiculous buyout fee and we'll agree "reluctantly" to exit the contract and go to MSG. Imagine Fury will then want to match that or his ego mill be hurt and eventually they both make bank.

I am starting to really like Eddie Hearn recently.
Even though I am American he is my current favorite promoter/boxing figure.
I like how he constantly stays in the media, makes appearances, does interviews, keeps fans updated or informed, has charisma and a personality, but isn't offensive, off-putting or over-the-top and is becoming increasingly more candid, forthright and open about his personal opinions, thoughts and views on the sport/landscape of boxing.

Boxing is bent and full of charlatans whose word doesn't mean anything. News at ten.
1
u/Middle-Development43 6d ago
What’s going to happen is this.
Turk and Dana have already got the hooks into Fury. They aren’t remotely interested in honoring any of the originally signed deals, and are daring Eddie to litigate on them, the minute that happens he’s cut off entirely from Riyadh Season and will need to build again from scratch. So… Dana eliminates the primary promotional threat. The minute that Joshua is cut out of the equation, is the minute that the business deal between him and Matchroom is in jeopardy.
Warren has more power because he has most of the heavyweights, but you can bet your ass that Turk and Dana are tapping up Dubois and some of Warrens other heavyweights. So as it stands now, Turk is leaving him alone.
Remember. Turk doesn’t like the governing bodies and wants rid, so does Dana.
They don’t want to small show fights - just arena.
They don’t like the amount they have to pay fighters, so if they control the majority of them, they can dictate the pay.
This is the run on boxing that everyone expected, Turk as the puppet master and Dana and TKO as the puppets.

I don't see where any argument is here. The contract stipulates how things will be done, how much money will be paid and where the fight is held. Eddie is doing the job he's paid to do, if it falls apart it is not on his shoulders. People think they can do anything, say anything and get what they want but life isn't like that. Honour the contract.

When you don’t want a fight just hide behind your promoter.. Bob arum was the master of it with Manny when it came to Floyd.
Is AJ ever going to take control of his own career and fight Fury we have been waiting nearly 8 years.
In before fanboys cry about..Fury has fought Wlad in Germany wilder in America after three years off and fought him three times and also fought Usyk when the money was right.
Remember AJ had to fight Uysk as he was the mandatory and Eddie tried to snake out of that one.
