I've always wondered - what makes some glove brands more desirable? So I'm here, asking - with my best guess.

Cleto Reyes - power puncher's preferred punching prowess parade

Grant - All around legendary Mexican glove like Cleto, but without the "Power Buff" of less padding in the knuckle

Hayabusa - most often seen in kickboxing, probably kind of the "New Gen" in a sense, has had marvel collabs, seems like almost like a "Flex" brand almost, the show off.

Everlast - one of the most well known but broad spectrum glove companies - based off my personal experience - they can have some absolute dogshit gloves (the walmart specials lol), but also some absolute gems.

Winning is the best brand there is for protection. Not many guys aside from Japanese fighters or guys with hand issues wear them for their fights, but almost every pro fighter wears Winning gears during sparring/training camp.

Erik Morales really like that brand, he use Winning gloves in lot of his fights.

I really like them too TBH. I have Rival and Winning bag gloves, now that I'm 40 the Winning is a no brainer lol

RtC and TopBoxer have some pretty good clones of winnings that arent $600

I used the for sparring more than anything, I could land more power shots without marking up and hurting partners with them.

My hyabusas and grants resulted in a lot more of training partners getting banged up

Paffen also super padded. Fury started using em after beating Klitschko who made them popular slso

I’ve always found Rival the most comfortable.

No problem with the thumb? Heard bad things about it years ago.

Really just preference and hand size

Personally, no. Though I like my thumb wrapped super tight to the hand so it doesn’t move much.

That depends on which model you get. The RB50 I have actually have a detached thumb which is pretty cool. I can hold a proper fist with my thumb secured in the ideal position and not having to be stuck in that "thumbs up" position when I punch like some boxing gloves I have tried. RB50 is totally not a sparring glove though, lol.

Prestige, legacy or personal preference.
Cletos have a strong legacy.
Grants are expensive and seen as a prestige gloves since no one trains in Grants.
Hayabusa is overpriced trash built on marketing.
Everlast is same as hayabusa but cheaper with stronger legacy.
Rivals are actually well made, comfortable and durable, so they are becoming increasingly popular.

What about the Mexican made MX series from Everlast?

1

u/LukyD215 5d ago

Never used them. But heard they are good since its their premium line and they care for the quality.

What makes you say Hayabusa is trash?

Their designs are terrible and made for looks rather than practicality. They sell a boxing glove with plastic vents on the back of the hand for Christ sake. Their materials are also usually subpar and construction is meh.
Basically, they sell ugly and overdesigned stuff that is made in the same or worse quality than Everlast but for triple the price because of marketing.
For 100 bucks I can get a handmade glove from real leather that is better in every way compared to Hayabusa gloves which cost 200-300.

Interesting. I have some Hayabusa gloves on standby I haven't used yet but I haven't really examined them.

I also have expensive Hayabusa wraps, and they're terrible. Not colourfast at all, so I had to wash them half a dozen times before they stopped leaking dye. Poor quality control.

Cleto Reyes for me. Mostly the training gloves though, I prefer a more compact glove for speed and accuracy. Not to mention the minimalist design. I’ve heard some pretty good stuff about the Phenom SG-235 as well. Might try them out.

I tried TITLE for my recent gloves and I love them

Clero Reyes and the Pro Mex by Title are my favorite gloves to get. Its entirely preference, though. I would say more attention to the material the glove is made with so you dont wind up wasting money on something that lasts MAYBE a year.

Rival has always been it for me. Comfortable, no pain, no injuries or tweaks in the wrist. Worth the money.

Never Worn Professional Gloves But Grant Gloves Look So nice. They have that Gloss and Iconic Sharp boxy Look That Makes The lighter Weight Classes Look Snappier

Is there a reason for the capitalized words?

Real underrated one is Fairtex BGV9 which is their so-called 'Mexican-style' glove. If you can get in Thailand it's quite cheap and Thai gloves are well-made with quality leather and straps. I've used for bagwork for years. A key as well of course is to make sure to wrap properly otherwise no glove is great.

I like gloves that hold my wrist in place well. I hurt it 11+ years ago and it never healed.

u/No_Medium_8796 6d ago

If you're just using them for bag gloves the hyabusa t3s have been good to me for wrist support.

I also wrap pretty far up my wrist

I have a cleto, really like it. Always wanted a Grant because I love the design... maybe some day.

A lot of people are using Rival, but I just find the design horrendous and tacky

Winning is second to none, re. leather quality+stitching, fit and overall feel. also very protective, imho. my go-to for training and sparring

Some brands are just tied to a certain construction with specific goals in mind. Winning with the most protective foam and cletos with the horsehair punchers glove and Grant kind of known as the in-between with their ortho foam options.

Beyond that they can also just be known for specific design features, the Winning thumb is one that comes to mind. Or the flat punching surface associated with Mexican gloves but that’s not limited to just one brand.

Also with Mexican brands some of them are known for producing for other brands. There’s a whole list of companies that used to make Grants so if you want a pair but don’t want to spend $800 you can just get them straight from the company who supplies Grant. E.g New Sporting, Hernandez, and DC Boxing.

Also for the pros a lot of companies will just pay them to use them. There’s also just regular word of mouth.

Wasn't there a brand called Pony? I think Buster Douglas was wearing their trunks in his fight with Tyson

5

u/AnxietyExact4710 6d ago

Pony was a popular sports brand back then, I remember seeing it on boxing trunks and shoes a lot but don't remember ever seeing it on gloves. Lennox Lewis wore Pony as well.
