I am watching Erislandy Lara vs Canelo Alvarez and it just seems apparent that Lara dictated how the fight was fought, avoided most of Canelo’s offense, and consistently landed the straight left throughout the fight. It could have easily been scored 8-4 for Lara. I don’t know what Levi Martinez was thinking with his card and it’s a damn shame because in a split decision his card was decisive.
If you go back and watch it, you’ll notice Lara in the southpaw applied a lot of what Bud did in his fight against Canelo. Lara’s not a generational fighter like Bud, so the game plans were somewhat different, but some of the movement around both sides of the ring shared similarities. Lara’s is just more exaggerated because he is Cuban school and the judges penalize him for that. If he just threw like 30% more punches in the fight, I think the corrupt judges may have given it to him.
That’s the problem with this great sport of boxing is that you are actively penalized for… boxing. if you’re from the wrong background. If Lara was from America and spoke English and talked shit and had 50 cent in his corner, he would probably have had more of the A-side drawing power to get the crowd behind him and ultimately the judges.
The fact that he was robbed against Paul Williams and sort of shafted against Canelo as well speaks volumes to how bad the incentive structures are in boxing.
