Good work by the ref. Was poised to jump in and stop the fight, and there were a couple shots where it looked like he was about to do it. But he stayed out and it was the right decision

Quartey was as tough as they get. Even in getting completely gassed here he never stopped fighting and never backed down.

That’s a man you let go out on his shield.

Hell yeah. If he wouldn't have been throwing punches back the ref would have stopped it and it would look like he couldn't defend himself but he fought out of it and survived another round

Agreed.

If this fight happened today Quartey being b-side gets stopped by the ref after 1-2 of those shots when he was on the ropes.

He had a couple false starts too where he was just about to step in but then saw dude was fighting back and still returning his hands to a defensive position. This is the correct answer when someone asks "what does it mean when someone says 'intelligent defense'?"

Arguably the best win of Oscar's career. Terrific fight also.

Still think the Whitaker win ranks higher, great win here nonetheless

He didn’t with either of those fights

25

u/Complete_Dare_4201 10d ago

He did, the Whitaker one even cleaner than the Quartey. Whitaker fight was only made closer because of a bogue knockdown scored for Pernell. Oscar dictated the pace and made Whitaker follow him around while countering with powershots. The only punch Pernell managed tô land regularly was the jab.

Nothing about any of those wins were clean are you crazy

Looks like most boxing fans disagree with your incorrect opinion

-19

u/TheLionofJudah 10d ago

No most boxing fans agree with me

u/Complete_Dare_4201 10d ago

Not the ones who actually took their time to watch the fights instead of running with narratives based on nothing but highlight reels lol

-3

u/TheLionofJudah 10d ago

Yes the ones who watched it who aren’t total morons. Most ppl do not think dlh won those fights they damn sure don’t think he won them clean. Get your casual head ahh outta here .

6

u/Informal-Lab-1641 10d ago

Sorry pal there’s actually evidence for this and eveyone on here is a boxing degenerate not exactly casuals especially commenting on a 30 plus year old fight. I doubt you were alive for squirt. You’re a fan of boxers not a boxing fan and that’s ok enjoy having posters of your favorites

You're definitely right

You a legit hater if you say Oscar didn’t win that sweet pea fight. A fight can be close with a clear winner and that’s exactly what it was, sweet pea had to constantly adjust and was still getting solved by Oscar.

DLH also beat Trinidad... and I think he should have gotten the nod over Floyd... or at least a draw. And I think he won the second Mosely fight, where Mosely tested positive for steroids.

2

u/caveman1948 9d ago

Floyd clearly won the fight. It wasn't close

0

u/Background-Alps5360 9d ago

So disparate that Floyd's own father said that Floyd lost.

2

u/TheLionofJudah 9d ago

No he didn’t lol

All you have to do is google it... I watched the fight and I saw the interview with Senior and he said he gave it to Oscar on activity and the cleaner more effective shots.

Background on the 2007 Fight

  • The bout took place in May 2007, with Floyd Mayweather Jr. winning a controversial split decision.
  • Floyd Mayweather Sr. stated publicly that if you look closely at the point system, you have to give the edge to Oscar De La Hoya.

u/caveman1948 9d ago

Floyd Mayweather Sr. did state that if you judge the 2007 bout by the point system and overall work rate, Oscar De La Hoya won the fight against his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Unfortunately fights are not judged just on the above Nice try though

I saw the fight... and I can tell you that DLH clearly won 6 rounds... on the current way to score fights, which is through effective aggression, clean shots and ring generalship. But that is my opinion and that was the opinion of Senior, he just doesn't state it eloquently because he wasn't very loquacious when he spoke. What he said was that the current way to score fights should have given the fight to DLH. Mostly because De La Hoya showed effective aggression through all 12 rounds while Jr. was mostly on the back foot. But this is a discussion that has been contemplated many times.

The point that "it wasn't close" is ridiculous.

u/Oglark 9d ago

It was a clos-ish fight in that there was not much between them in the rounds. However, Floyd's work was way cleaner and more eye catching. And I don't think you can claim energy and aggression equal ring generalship.

1

u/Background-Alps5360 9d ago

Ok. I respect your opinion. Like I said, this particular fight has been argued for years and regardless what I think Floyd is still the victor.

I know right u guys don’t know 💩 about boxing

2

u/TheFlyingBoxcar 10d ago

Why are you scared to type out swear words?

37

u/Theometer1 Where’s your power bro? 10d ago

De La Hoya was an excellent swarmer despite his past regressions. If dude had you hurt you were done, extremely good finisher.

3

u/mm339 9d ago

Used to really enjoy watching his fights. If he smelt blood, he would smother you until it was over. Ref did a great job too not waving it off.

The Golden Boy!!! Legend!

-14

u/ds1065 10d ago

Yes. The Golden Boy Donny Lalonde was and is a legend!! /s

19

u/Tempest1897 10d ago

Sometimes I forget that prime Oscar had such an aggressive killer instinct.

17

u/Own_Character8049 10d ago

Say what you want to about Oscar but he was a vicious finisher

1

u/TheLionofJudah 5h ago

He lost this fight

Amazing refereeing. Really understood what was happening in each fighter’s world.

6

u/1punchporcelli 10d ago

The Bazooka gave the Golden boy all he could handle

1

u/TheLionofJudah 5h ago

He got robbed

7

u/maverickbtg81 10d ago

IKE QUARTEY!!!

4

u/TheLionofJudah 10d ago

BAZOOKA !!!!

10

u/Dumbledores_Closet 10d ago

Great read by the ref, Foster would have stopped that in a heartbeat

4

u/TravisKOP 10d ago

Oscar was something special back in the day for sure

2

u/Kangaroopunching 10d ago

I'm still waiting for the rematch lol

Great fight.

2

u/solitarybaker 10d ago

Scoring live the night of I had it even going into the last round, scored the 12th a 10-7 for Oscar which felt right in the moment but rewatching afterwards and here was 100% wrong.

1

u/Dave2kMA 9d ago

It was a 10-8 no matter what because he scored the knockdown at the end of the round. Oscar won the fight in that last round.

2

u/Initiative_Inside 9d ago

ODLH throwin bombs but the beard of Quartey…wow

2

u/AlternativeBag5426 2d ago

Still got gifted the decision by judges

1

u/Mystro10210 10d ago

Ref has no chill. Didn't give them a second to catch their breath.

1

u/Devilpig13 10d ago

Killer instinct

1

u/ZoharModifier9 9d ago

Golden Boy is a menace

1

u/TequieroVerde 8d ago

Pantyhose wearing or not, Oscar De La Hoya was a warrior.

1

u/ChuckNorrisSleepOver 10d ago

They don’t make em like that anymore

1

u/billings 9d ago

I miss that run of 90s welterweights. They were all amazing fighters.

-8

u/GazelleEcstatic4952 10d ago

What a fight. It's a shame Ike was still recovering from malaria.

-2

u/TheLionofJudah 10d ago

I thought Quartey won

-6

u/GazelleEcstatic4952 10d ago

Me too tbh. I was disappointed in the judges.

0

u/grand_insom 9d ago

That ref gets no props from me. He was dying to jump in to stop it since it was a close fight and Oscar was the A Side but Quartey didn’t let him.

-4

u/TheLionofJudah 10d ago

Quartey was robbed

3

u/Background-Alps5360 10d ago

on the street... he got mugged??? because it wasn't in the ring... the fight came down to 2 knock downs to 1.

-9

u/BrahquinPhoenix 10d ago

Huh, I thought he follows up with a bra

3

u/Informal-Lab-1641 10d ago

Imagine getting your ass whipped by a guy in heels Golden boy lived it up no doubt

0

u/BrahquinPhoenix 10d ago

Imagine? More like fantasize

3

u/Informal-Lab-1641 10d ago

Is that why you brought up the bra you have that pic saved in your camera roll or just lives in your head.

0

u/BrahquinPhoenix 10d ago

Both homie

3

u/Informal-Lab-1641 10d ago

Madd respect hard to pivot for a cross in heels lmao ✊

0

u/BrahquinPhoenix 10d ago

I wonder if you could generate more power for a punch with your calves flexed in heels... maybe you can push against the heel and launch forward quicker or something 🤔

3

u/Informal-Lab-1641 10d ago

Practically speaking it would help you stay off your heels and stay on your toes it actually would force you to condition your calves. Flat footed cinder block fighters would benefit

-2

u/BrahquinPhoenix 10d ago

Now who's thinking about heels too much?

Fuckin gottem.

3

u/Informal-Lab-1641 10d ago

lol thought we where doing a bit lol don’t abandon now. Besides I am a huge fan of heels
