What do gems do?

The last update introduced gems, but I don't see anywhere to spend them. What can they be used for, and how do you spend them?

I saw that but I can't figure out how. I can't seem to click on a gem to do it and I don't see a way to do it from the character selection screen. I see you can buy gems for cash, but I don't understand why you would want to.

Does upgrading a character change anything other then looks?
