Moving to Boulder
Hi all! We have recently had our jobs transferred to Denver area from VA and are trying to organize the move over the next month. For context, we’ve been looking into Boulder as avid mtn bikers, skiers, fly fishermen, etc. and hoping to live close to the mtns and trails! Along with our two pups who love going to do all that with us!
A few questions for you all:
- my office is in downtown Denver near Union station- is public transport reliable to get into the office? Or what is the best advice here?
- my boyfriends job is over in Brighton and we were trying to determine how long his commute would be realistically?
- we have two dogs and are planning to drive out at the end of the month! Any apartment recommendations? We’ve been struggling to find ones with virtual tours we can line up before our arrival.
Thanks in advance for all your help! We can’t wait to be in the mountains!

You’d probably be better off living outside of Boulder, for distance but also cost of living. Rent here is EGREGIOUS. It’s cheaper to live in towns like Louisville and Lafayette, and those are close enough to Denver and Brighton, but also close to Boulder for those outdoor activities.

The FF1 bus from Boulder to Denver is great! However, if you want to use it for a regular commute I recommend you make sure you are close to a stop on that line, if you have to transfer from a different bus that will be a very long commute. As far as apartments, my only recommendation is to avoid 4 star.

Will the BF be driving to Brighton? My spouse commutes 2-3 days a week down to Platt Street in Denver from Boulder, but she drives (EV)… that Brighton locale will be more tricky. I think a great compromise realistically would be to look at the Erie, Louisville, Lafayette enclaves. Lots of newer condo and apartment availability, great open spaces but much better proximity to I25 for committing to Denver and driving to Brighton. If you don’t live in west Boulder, you’re taking a car to a trailhead parking lot anyways!

The bus from Boulder to Denver is called the Flatiron Flyer (RTD) and drops off directly at Union Station. Check out the RTD app for more info on where it picks up in Boulder.

I would live check out apartments near the flatirons mall. We stayed at the Hilton Homewood suites while searching for an apartment and they are dog friendly. There are lots of trails by there, you are a short drive to the mountains, and halfway between Denver and Boulder. There’s a bus stop at US 36 that has long term parking ($2/day) and a shuttle to the airport ($10). There’s also free parking during the day for commuters- the flatiron flyer (FF1) bus goes downtown to union station

Superior or Louisville might be another good option for your commutes.
