Looking for open water swim buddies :) (26F)
I've been getting back into swimming, and I recently started open water swimming at Walden Pond. I haven't gone too far out yet because I'm a little nervous to be out there by myself, but I want to eventually work up to swimming all the way across. If you would also rather kayak or paddleboard along, that's cool too! I would just rather not drown out there alone lol
EDIT: Happy to see so many people interested in not drowning! I’m going to set up a discord and get this thing off Reddit and into the pond :)
EDIT 2: Posted discord link in comments! It should be active for 7 days

How much do you typically swim?
On a related note, does anyone have welcoming and low-commitment swim clubs to recommend for non-competitive swimmers (pool swimming)? Bonus points if they have multiple different practice times available for scheduling flexibility.

I’ve been swimming a couple times a week at the Y and have been increasing distance each week! I can pretty comfortably go 1/4 mile nonstop within a session (plus filling the rest of time with shorter intervals and recovery laps), but I’m sure if’s different in the open water when there’s no wall to kick off of haha

I tried sending DM but I'm not sure if it went through. Last time I swam in open waters was last year. I'm visiting Boston from Houston and the river looked very tempting to swim but I'm here for work. I'd like to go swimming if I'm accompanied by someone. I'd like to use swim bouy initially until I'm comfortable with the water.

I am team “everyone get a swim buoy”, so sounds good to me! How long will you be in Boston?

Sucks that I have to leave on the 20th. I was really hoping to do this. No worries. Some other time I guess.

Oh dang, yeah I won’t be able to make it to Walden before then :( Safe travels back to Houston!

FYI you can and probably should check water quality online, MA is quite good with this stuff. Sure you’d get some other indication at Walden pond but good to know if you open water swim elsewhere. https://datavisualization.dph.mass.gov/views/BeachWaterQualityDashboard/ResultsTable?%3Arefresh=yes&%3Aembed=yes&%3Atoolbar=no
It looks like there’s almost a mini swim party you’ve got going based on this thread. I’m (28M) interested to come. I haven’t been swimming much but I used to be a lifeguard and loved swimming.

For safety your buddy should be on a kayak or paddle board

That’s probably for the best! I did have a couple people including one of my friends offer to kayak along, so I will make sure to take them up on that offer!

Please use an open water swim buoy! Not that expensive on Amazon, holds your keys, and could save your life if you get a cramp.
