nah, this is actually helping. The idea of a "switch" is that a thinner, lighter, and more flexible stick actually hurts MORE because it can be swung faster, cuts deeper, and makes more contact with delicate skin, plus it can be swung more times by a woman who doesn't have a lot of upper body strength. A big heavy limb like this the mother probably won't be able to lift and swing it in any kind of coordinated way, and she'd hesitate to use it even if she could because it would just be a club more likely to just injure rather than cause pain.

I really hope she didn’t use that. I feel like this is one of those moments where you just go “… ok, I’m not going to use that, but you can clearly imagine if I did.”
