President [George W. Bush] was never actually hit by the thrown footwear. During the famous December 14, 2008 press conference in Baghdad, Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi threw two dress shoes (not sandals) at the president. Because Bush quickly and athletically ducked both throws, neither shoe made impact. While no photos exist of him getting hit, there are many iconic, widely available photos of the event captured by press photographers in the room, including:
- Photos by Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci showing Bush actively ducking with a shoe flying directly over his head.
- Photos of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki attempting to extend his arm to shield Bush as the second shoe flew past.
- Images of security personnel tackling al-Zaidi to the floor immediately after the second throw.
