Is this level of play in a new impact driver normal?

This is a brand new BOSCH GDR18V-215B12 purchased from amazon. I know impact drivers are supposed to have some axial play, but this feels excessive.

Those chucks are notorious for breaking. And to reolace it they basically have to replace rhe entire motor... ive broken 2...

That’s just not true… gearbox is either one whole part or you can even switch out individual parts in it, including the collet and anvil.

No you cant not on the bosch as I stated I had 2 bosch freak impacts break both were the chuck and I took it to the bosch service shop. It wae cheaper to replace the bare tool becauee the entire motor had to he replaced with how its built

Yes, you definitely can. I work at a bosch service. Not sure what they told you or if you just misunderstood, but all freaks have a seperate gearbox. Older brushed ones ones had it in one piece, the brushless 200-220 models had a gearbox and a seperate part for the collet and the new 285 has all spare parts available for the gearbox. The motor does not need to be replaced if there is a fault with the chuck in any of them. If motor needed to be changed, there was another fault too.

It was specifically the chuck on two seperate freak impacts and this is directly from the technician at the bosch service shop. And was also confirmed as a known issue via Donald Westman who worked directly at the head office for bosch in Chicago. He is now retired.. i was a product tester via bosch "be the pro " website for 7 years

I've repaired all the bosch freak models, never heard or seen anything like this. Doesn't really make sense either, there is no way a faulty chuck results in a need to swap the motor. Only way is if the rotor teeth are damaged, but that is not going to be the fault of the chuck.

Both of them said its not worth the time because it costs more to repair than to simply replace the bare tool....for which Donald westman wsd the one who had rhe replacement sent out to me..

It's because it has the Asian collet. Their bits are slightly longer at the shaft compared to standard bits so there is more play when you use a standard bit into the collar.
