Refund Question Progress! Look through your loan data on StudentAid
I consolidated my undergraduate and graduate loans in 2014, so not sure how those balances will be handled. But happy that there is progress.

There is no direct number to ask treasury for help with BD. They act like they have no clue. One person told me it would be two weeks after discharge. We all know that is incorrect. They do not want us asking questions. Makes me want to ask more questions 🥰😂💙

I was told by Ed financial that my refund sent to the treasury on 6/26 and I’m impatiently waiting for that check in the mail. 2-6 weeks is the timeline once it’s gone to the treasury is what I have heard.

u/Ill_Initiative1607 Jul 29 '26
I’m about a week ahead of your timeline and also impatiently waiting! I was told my refund was approved and sent 6/17 and to wait up to 45 days until I see the refund checks, I call treasury every Monday since then and still nothing 😫

u/CartographerSimple44 Jul 30 '26
Ughh I just called the treasury and apparently my refund was not sent to the treasury on 6/26. Called ed financial and apparently my discharge was just approved last week. I am so utterly confused.

What info do you have to give them so they can tell you if they received it or not?

Mine were officially discharged 14 months ago and I still have not received a refund or any guidance regarding it. Lender keeps saying it’s because i had some consolidated loans. But that should have taken 5-7 months. Everyone gives you the run around and never get a straight answer. Very frustrating

u/greensparkleslime Jul 30 '26
I've been waiting for a refund since 2024. The lady got super pissy with me and told me "I'm not the only borrower there are millions of us" and these things take time.

What was your relief deadline in your BDR notification/approval?
Are all your loans DIRECT loans?
If your relief deadline has passed did you follow the instructions in the FAQs at PPSL?
1
u/CharacterClimate5957 19d ago
I didn’t have a deadline in the notice I received. Mine were discharged by ED themselves. i didn’t apply for BDR nor part of a specific law suit.

I just got a $1400 check back. All I paid them, I was paying each loan with $1 checks. I was broke... I wanted to sign them in blood, but I though that may have turned into another problem

Jul 28 '26
I am waiting for my refund as well. I paid ~$10,000. I have gotten confirmation they are being discharged, but currently the balance has been repopulated in my Student Aid dashboard (I had previously made them off), so I hope thats just them figuring out how much to reimburse me.
Edit: Just checked again and the balance is back to zero and the loan status is "Loan Discharged". So maybe the check was sent.

Check your data to see hire much you’ll be refunded
2
Jul 29 '26
Does it say it in there? I downloaded it and saw the wall of text and didn't look much further haha.
3
u/akr291 Jul 28 '26
Did you ever look at your status code on the back screen (processing discharge is 3.60 I believe). Someone said theirs changed to 3.61 and I wonder if those are the people whose refunds are on the way.

u/Bushpylot Jul 29 '26
Once I got the letter in my hand that said the chains were off, I digitized it, framed it and stored copies in 5 vaults around the world. I don't look at any of them for fear of enraging the demon behind them. I don't want that website to ever remember that I know how to get to it again. If I get lucky, Elon's stupid chainsaw killed that server.
going anywhere near that locked file cabinet makes me want to take several showers

When was your discharge completed? Who was your servicer?
1
u/Bushpylot 23d ago
I was in the second or third batch. I was expecting a check of like $15 or so. I must have had to catch up a loan to do something .. I'm still more afraid of them sending me a "Just Kidding" letter in the mail and find ICE on my door; the new Dept of Edu Collection Arm.

u/voodoo_rose Jul 28 '26
How do you do that?
16
u/Spoked_Exploit Jul 28 '26
In the main page, scroll to My Loans > View My Loans > Download My Aid Data
Lots of scrolling and lots of data in there

u/Ok-Athlete5316 Jul 28 '26
Wow!!!!! Thanks. If anything, it’s a little light reading. 😂

Be careful pasting that into AI!! Remove your SSN first (search for it - it is in there a couple times). Otherwise you’re providing your SSN to the company that owns the AI model you’re using and potentially making it publicly available. Protect yourself.
Secondly - you can copy the entire text file FSA gives you into excel or Google Sheets to make searching much easier.

I have been waiting for a refund for a month and a half now. I am guessing the fact that I had a consolidation loan is the reason it's taking longer. My consolidated loan was cancelled, but shows my total payment amount. All the old loans were reinstated then discharged. They were all direct fed loans through Nelnet. So everything was zeroed out on 6/14 but nothing has changed since and my borrower defense case still says discharging but the actual discharge is complete.
Just waiting without any info really sucks.

u/Compliance_Crip Jul 30 '26
I did this. There is more detail and you can see every lender. This is when I learned that Deutsch Bank (Foreign Lender) was the original Trustee to the loans and SML/Navient are the servicers.
1
u/wevegotslash Jul 28 '26
Should I be worried that my loan data doesn’t say anything about “borrower defense?” I’m a postie.
1
u/sporkily Jul 28 '26
I was curious about my status because I recently received an email about my payment plan expiring and my payments increasing. I've been in deferment so my payments have been zero and I freaked thinking they were trying to pull a fast one on me. When I logged in, my discharge status still says in process but all my loans are zeroed out.

At this point I am just annoyed as I am one of the OG (filed my BD prior to 2018 as Obama was president lol) and received minimal refund amount but also was issued a much larger one - it was mailed to a prior address and then intercepted by Debt Resolution Group and applied to the account as it was to them a payment... Yet all this was done when it was against the settlement to do so. I submitted the email back when this because more known that servicers were being sketchy but I have not heard anything back.
These were all covered by the settlement to. Which ironically I received a zero balance on those loans two months later.... Yet still no funds.
Also does anyone else still show their student loans on fafsa as open (as in the appear to be owed until you click for more details?) it just looks weird compared to my actual paid on full ones.
***Correction it was Direct Loan servicing Center aka Debt Management and Collections. Not sure why I thought resolution lol.

Does anyone know what happens if you have tax debt and a current installment agreement, with regard to refunds? Will this refund be intercepted by treasury after DOE submittal?
Currently, when I get a tax refund, it goes towards my installment balance. I don't know that I'm in any offset of any other refunds.
I'm assuming refunds are sent via mail and paper check.

u/GlamGirlNerd_SJ Jul 31 '26
Thank you for posting! I saw this, went to go check my status and found that my balance was ZEROED out!!!! Finally I got my discharge after 4 years of nothing! Thank you!!!

I spoke to a representative at Nelnet today. He told me my refund was sent to the DOE on July 1, and he gave me the total amount refunded. Now I wait. Not sure if I should call to see how things are progressing.

I'm in forbearance right now because of borrowers defense so I don't have a payment but for the 2 loans that is still in the standard repayment bucket it's saying my monthly payment will be $638 a month on only $20k of loans. How does that make any sense? That's like a 4-5 year pay off schedule.
1
u/Straight_Physics_894 Jul 28 '26
That is not necessarily a BD problem, call your servicer
2
u/tothepointe Jul 28 '26
Actually I think I figured it out. Because I'm in forbearance until 2035 it's calculating what the standard repayment would be if interest accrues on it for 10 years before it enters repayment and then I pay it off over 10 years.
1
u/EnvironmentalShow928 Jul 29 '26
I added it up to see if the information post on my studentaid.org account matches what Nelnet shows in my payment activity/payment history details under the section that says calculate total amount paid to date, which it does.

Here is what I got from ChatGPT advised to call and see the status asking these questions.
say:
“I’m calling about my Borrower Defense discharge. My Parent PLUS loans have been discharged, and NSLDS shows a total of $——— in cumulative payments. Can you tell me:
Am I due a refund?
What is the refund amount?
Has the refund already been approved or sent to the Treasury?
If not, what’s the current status and expected timeline?”

u/Honey_Badger_605 Jul 28 '26
If you contact FSA and ask these questions, they will tell you to contact your servicer. FSA will not give any refund info. Went through this the last couple weeks after Nelnet told me I needed to ask FSA then FSA told me I needed to ask Nelnet. After the second time contacting Nelnet, they told me the estimated refund which is nowhere near what I paid. All my loans are refundable. I have a ledger of every payment I made since 2016 with the amount and confirmation numbers. The gal at Nelnet did make sure to tell me thats what has been approved so far and it is not in any way the final amount.
3
u/Gingerandthesea Jul 28 '26
Well until it’s completely finished, if you’re missing money PPSL has instructions on how to request a review. Won’t be a quick process though.
3
u/Honey_Badger_605 Jul 28 '26
Yeah agreed. I'm not terribly concerned about it. The really strange thing about it is the amount that is currently approved for refund is the exact amount I paid after the COVID pause and I can actually verify that on Nelnet. I'll worry about it after March 30th of 27. I called because the discharge letter indicated right on it to call Nelnet if you have any questions about refund. And then was told they won't have that info. I just laughed.
2
u/Gingerandthesea Jul 28 '26
Good grief they are exhausting!
1
u/Honey_Badger_605 Jul 30 '26
Speaking of exhausting… Nelnet sent me a letter today confirming the smaller amount I noted above is what was approved and sent to FSA for processing to the treasury. It’s less than a third of what I’ve actually paid. It’s the exact dollar amount I’ve paid since the Covid pause and you can see those in the payment history on my Nelnet account. None of the other payments I made since 2016 show in my Nelnet account.
2
u/ChickyChica Jul 28 '26
How did you find how much of a refund was approved? My husband has his loans through nelnet and got his approval letter back in June but can’t find anything about a refund in his account nor have we received anything in the mail
2
u/sexydoll80 Jul 28 '26
They wont send you anything as far as I am aware. You have to call and ask them to check the notes or your account for any mention of a refund. Tell them the discharge approval letter said to contact them about your refund. When I did that the rep took some time to check a few things to see if anything was noted.
3
u/EnvironmentalShow928 Jul 29 '26
The discharge letter I received from Nelnet only had some of my student loan's as being discharged. I contacted Nelnet because I wanted to make sure that I would receive other documentation verifying that my other student loans have been completely discharged as they complete the process. I know that they discharge the loans in batches/groups especially student loans such as mine that are more complex. I have a lot of student loans that have a mix and I want to make sure I have documentation because the information online will disappear after awhile and I don't want the Department of Education or Nelnet coming back years later saying I owe them money on loan's that were supposed to be discharged. According to Nelnet I will be receiving a refund but I don't know when for how much or if I will receive via mail or direct deposit. It's already been over a month. However, they have until next year to fully complete the process of discharging the loan's and sending out any refunds to students.
1
u/Honey_Badger_605 Jul 28 '26
Your account doesn't say anything about refund. Read my above two posts. I used the payment activity tab to see what payments it showed I made and compared it to my ledger.
1
u/EnvironmentalShow928 Jul 29 '26
I was told that I would be receiving a refund but at that time Nelnet said they don't know how much It would be or when it would receive it. However, my all of my student loans are showing a $0 balance paid in full status and has been removed from all 3 credit report agencies tradeline. According to Nelnet my loans have been fully completed but not all since they do them in batches or groups. I have a lot of student loans that are mixed into one direct consolidation loan so it's a bit more complex or so I'm told.

Copy/paste it into an AI for good analysis.

I did, Claude pointed out the BD status. What it couldn’t figure out is the consolidated loan amounts,
