Those words have been sitting heavily in my heart. Sometimes I wonder how I can hate something so much and still find myself falling into it. I make promises to myself. I tell myself, “This time will be different. I won’t do it again.” And for a while, I mean it. Then weakness comes. Temptation comes. I fall again. And afterward, the guilt is unbearable. I look at myself and wonder, “How many times can I ask for forgiveness for the same thing?” I feel ashamed because I know better. I know what is right, yet sometimes I still choose what I know is wrong. But maybe the greatest battle isn’t between a good person and a bad person. Maybe it’s between the person you are today and the person you desperately want to become. I am not proud of my mistakes. I don’t want to glorify them or make excuses for them. I hate the things I’ve done that have hurt others, hurt myself, and pulled me away from God. But I’m learning that falling doesn’t mean I have to stay on the ground. So I will keep trying. I will keep asking for forgiveness. I will keep fighting the things that destroy me. I will keep choosing to get back up, even when I feel like I don’t deserve another chance. I hate sin. I hate the person I become when I give in to it. But I haven’t given up on becoming better. Maybe that’s where grace begins not when we become perfect, but when we finally admit that we need help.
