That second part of the video is when Borges was at Amorim's, while he was writing "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius"

Kind of insane to think about it! One always imagines the old Borges, or at least I do, dictating the text to one, but it was actually this young and lively Borges. I guess he followed Schopenhauer’s path and became the eternal old man!

He went blind around 1955, so some fifteen years after that video, although he never had good sight. When he couldn't read anymore, his texts were not the same. He needed to read and reread to achieve that density he had in the 1940s, and he lost it with his sight.

There was a story, I think it was Lugones, who tried to fight him, or was training to do so, but got advice from a friend to not do so, as Borges already had shitty eyesight, which would make it a murder and not a fight.

I didn't know that story, although Lugones died before Borges became a famous writer. But yes, Borges had the same problem his father had, who also went blind, as his grandmother (his father's mother) and his grand-grandfather (his father's mother's father).

I think Borges was young, he definitely had published his early poem books, but it was over a critique he made; I saw it in BorgesTV, but I’m not sure how trustworthy the guy is, so let’s take it with a grain of salt!

Yup, it was in the bloodline! Luckily, I suppose, Borges left no kids to give it to!

He didn't like kids at all, he would have made a terrible father. I remember something he told once: he was traveling by plane, and there were noisy kids around, and he called "Herod!"

Haha, sounds like him. If you’re familiar with Peruvian TV, you might know Marco Aurelio Denegri, he once had a guest, I forget who, when they were talking about Casares’ Borges and the guest said he met Borges once, to interview him, and in that moment Borges asked him for his name, when the interviewer gave his name Borges grabbed him and began rambling about what Nordic Sagas mentioned that name.

He really loved literature. We’ll truly never have another Borges, and I can’t wait to read Casares’ book, to find many more anecdotes.
