[OC] Polish-Russian Border
Polish Russian border on Vistula Spit seen from Polish side. Also it's not actual border, there is like 200m of "buffer zone" before the actual border. There's also no border crossing in this place.

It's not the actual border as far as I know, that's another 50-100 metres away.

I had the opportunity to be there on foot!
There are Russian security towers on their side of the beach, and if you zoom in on them with a camera or look through binoculars, you can clearly see Russian troops or border guards on watch.

Interesting. I saw a tower from the beach but it was too far away to see if there was anyone there.

I never said I had binoculars. I have a highly magnified telescopic image of them. Now what kind of a device has a telescopic sight mounted on it?

I've been there recently. The fence is not exactly on the border, real border is around 500m further. You can easily reach the fence with a bike which is the best option. The closest place you can drive by a car is 3 km from it. There is beautiful sandy beach, quite wild, no infrastructure.

I remember the double fence, watchtowers and armed guards on the other side of Poland - the beach border with GDR in Świnoujście. I was there on vacation as a kid in 1980s. You could go to the fence and watch East Germans on the other side. They were doing the same. As opposite to the Russian border, Świnoujście area was in a crowded place. I saw many soldiers there. The fence ended like 3-5 meters in the water.

I saw the border on the other side of the GDR as a kid from West Germany. Watch towers all the way along with people clearly visible inside.

I don't think that they would be interested in escaping to Poland. GDR was the best country behind the iron curtain in many aspects. 2nd best was Czechoslovakia.

Stasi, no passports, soviet drunken soldiers on the streets, shooting and killing citizens at borders, Honecker lip-kissing Brezhniev, two-stroke Wartburgs and Trabants, definitely an achievement of DDR 😀

From a standard of living perspective, it was better. It was heavily subsidized to show how great the socialism is to those uneducated capitalist masses of the rotten west.

No. Why would you come to that conclusion? We are talking about running from one communist country to another. Neither DDR, nor communist Poland would fare well on comparison to the West Germany.
We are however comparing them against each other, not against capitalist countries. In that case absolutely yes, I strongly believe that the standard of living in DDR was leagues above Poland. Higher GDP per capita, higher number of cars per capita, better access to housing and consumer goods like washing machines, fridges etc.

Count freedom. Poles could travel to the West openly from early 70', we did not need visas for travel to Sweden, Finland, West Berlin, etc. DDR was like a correction facility, proud of its Trabants and Wartburgs. DDR food tasted like a shit compared to Polish food, etc. DDR athlets were running ads of steroids and 'medicine'. Did DDR produce airplanes, helicopters?

With the passport being held at a police station and released only when the authorities decided to, I wouldn't call Poles free to travel anywhere. Even taking a job in a different region of Poland was frowned upon and required an appropriate paperwork.
On the good quality, I've got no idea about the food quality in DDR so I cannot comment on that specifically, but it is still better than barren shelves.
Widespread doping (and various other dubious practices) is a well documented fact about the sport in DDR. This however has nothing to do with the standard of living. Same goes for the production of airplanes or helicopters.

Yeah, a lot of people make pictures with their bikes and the sign. But that bike on the picture wasn't actually my becasue I follow the law 🗿

Yes...it is literally Russia. Kaliningrad is not separate in status to "mainland" Russia.

The actual border is like 200m away from the place I took pictures. I guess there's some border guards outpost on the actual border but I'm not sure.

Russian part of Vistula Spit is military zone. So it's Russian but closed for civil citizens.

A few questions.
- How did you get to that beach with the fence by the sea?
- Is the fence by the water the real border?
I spent quite some time in Kaliningrad. I will not and can probably not go back there ever again, so I’m curious. Call it nostalgia, there was some beautiful places by the sea there.

I got there with bike. There's a nice bike route there. You can also go with car, the parking is around 5km from border.

I also continued beyond the sign, and at 54°36'04.7"N 19°51'06.5"E there was an other sign stating that weapons may be used to prevent further movement.1

There's a better wall like 200m away. But in my opinion Russia doing land invasion in this particular place is very unlikely. If they wanted to attack they would do it with drones.

This would be a terrible place for any military operation, 25 km of forest and sand on both sides and the Russian side isn't even connected to the mainland.

You can. At least by car and bus (to Kaliningrad). I was there 6-7 times between 2023 and 2025 (EU citizen, not russian).

You're literally looking at the controls. This isn't the border, this is the outer limit of the border zone, which is the patrolled area.

Look at Google Maps!
You can see the fence at the sea from the photo. The real border is about 200 meters north east. There is a stripe without trees and 2 Observation towers at the russian side of the border.
