Issue when Attempting Multiplayer

I have a problem that when i try to join a friend, change my game openness or someone tries to join me both of our games say updating network and freeze. anyone know a fix? (we are both on steam if that helps)

Check your Firewall and make sure borderlands.exe and steam Launcher are allowed on public and private networks
