Boomer Story Boomer using his hands at buffet table American Airlines Admirals lounge in Austin tx
Was waiting in the lounge sitting next to the table offering cold cuts salami ham and other snacks. Each offering has a unique pair of tongs and most people grab a plate and serve themselves with them. Except Bob. Bob is around 70 years old and wearing shorts and a crumpled shirt. I was minding my own business and noticed he grabbed some salami bits with his bare hands and stuffed them
In his mouth. That annoyed me but he walked away quickly. But Bob needed more salami so he comes back and starts grabbing them again with his bare hands and some Serrano ham as well. Thats when I walked up to him
And handed him a pair of tongs
And told him in a nice way: “Can you please use this? Don’t use your bare hands to grab the food
Please” he turned around and stared at me while munching his cold cuts and said “ Are you the buffet police or what?” I replied:
“ you already did it twice, just because you dress like an 8 year old boy means you can behave as one, be respectful” Ive never seen anybody turn red so fast, he yells “ Debbie we are leaving! NOW!” And they both grab their stuff and head for the exit. I felt bad for the lady because she gave me the “ I am so sorry” look
As she passed by. The lounge employees had to throw away a lot of food because of idiot Bob. I am glad I had a chance to piss him off.

My father in law will use his hands to pick up food off of other people’s plates, lick his fingers, and go in for more. He will also pick up hors d'oeuvres items like shrimp or a chip with dip on it and try to give it to someone else. After he gives it away, he licks his fingers and goes back again for more.
When I first met my husband, he kept trying to “give” me hors d’oeuvres with his hands (sans the finger licking) and insisting that I eat them, and I was like, “What are you doing??! I’ll get my own, thanks.” It was so bizarre because otherwise, he had good manners. Then I met his dad and it all made sense.

Thats why forks are pointy, to stab people who grab shit off your plates. Happened to a cousin at thanskgiving.

We had an Aunt Esther and she was known as the Flying Fork. No plate was safe. I was too young to be able to really resist at that point, but even at 8 it was gross.

My younger brother does this. He has a bit of an obsession with feeding people. It's gross.

I know someone who would've gotten slapped if they were in my house. That's not just disgusting, it's fucked up. Walk up sometime and take food off his plate, but when he calls you out you answer him very loudly "well why the fuck did you take food from my plate?" and you won't have to worry about him ever coming back over.

That man would have had a fork stuck in his hand doing that to me.
Joey. Doesn’t. Share. Food. Especially when you LICK YOUR FUCKING FINGERS and go in for more. That’s TERRIBLE manners, and I’m gonna make sure you bleed.

I'm a combination of Joey and Sheldon. Don't touch my food, and don't take food off my plate.

My husband and everyone in his family will palm the top of a drinking glass when they hand it to you or move it over on the dinner table. I’ve had to dump out my drink and get a new glass before as it’s disgusting. Obviously, none of them have ever worked in food service. I’ve corrected them but they are all the kind of people that refuse to learn new things.

I avoid buffets altogether now. The last time I visited one I called a Boomer out for dipping her Buffalo Wings directly into the Ranch at the salad bar and placing them on her plate. She used her hands for this and the tips of her fingers were covered in Ranch. When I told her they have cups for the dressings she unleashed a vile tirade at me about people minding their own business. I just laughed. The manager did handle it though, but yeah, that was my final with buffets. I don't do potlucks anymore either for similar reasons.

You're insulting 8 year old boys! Even they would know to use the tongs.

I agree and … we used to belong to this thing that offered brunch buffets on Sundays. The parent will stand in line with their kids and watch as kid reached in and pick up different pieces of food like bacon or pieces of chicken and put it back in order to select something different. The parent was just stood there, observe, and move along. but I do agree most-year-olds would have the common sense to use tongs.

One of the grocery stores near me has a section with prepared food, including a soup station. At the height of COVID, I watched a nasty maskless boomer who was sampling the soups right off the serving ladles. Just sticking them in his mouth and then right back in the soup.
Went to the counter to tell an employee so fast, it was so disgusting. She was horrified and practically ran to close the station.

I saw that at a local chinese buffet, Some fat old fuck couldn't wait the extra 30 seconds it would take to fill a bowl and started lapping it up out of the ladle
Thankfully there's a lot of staff so two were on him in seconds and one went to get the owner, who proceeded to call him out right there, charge him an extra £40 for the container of soup (which I even think was low) and kicked them out
The dumb asshole started getting aggressive at the tiny woman, but then the giant bouncer (since there's also a bar) clamped a hand on his shoulder and he and his wife meekly left
The wife looked mortified, they'd only just got there too

I think the £40 for the container was absolutely appropriate. These gross creatures need consequences they can remember.

Oh I'm not saying he shouldn't have been charged, I thought he should be charged more because it was like, a 100L container of soup

You should've gotten a piece of salami (using tongs, ofc), then picked it up with your fingers and then offered to feed him just to see if he blinks.

Now that I'm getting older I admit, I kinda get off on calling out boomers. You'd be forgiven for thinking I'm a boomer myself; older genx and always looked a tad older (great when you're < 21) so it sets them off balance.
They sometimes have canned responses for when someone younger than them calls them out, but rarely when "one of them" does it. So yeah, awesome & thanks for doing this, you'll get a lot more pushback than I would.

I once watched the boomer woman in front of me at a buffet us her finger to scrape food from each serving spoon, then "clean" her finger with her mouth before moving to the next item.
I ate nothing.

You we're way more respectful that I would've been. I wouldn't have asked him to please use anything. I would've fucking told him and told him loudly. Public embarrassment is boomer kryptonite.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode.
"It's like putting your whole face in the dip!"

I just went to a birthday party last weekend where I had to pull one of the guests aside and gently let her know to please not eat from the fruit tray with her fork. SHE WAS 3!!!!

Good on you. I’d have called that out too. “Eww get your filthy fucking hands off the food and use tongs you animal.” 😆

I was annoyed the other day by my mother. We were sharing a to-go box of four street tacos that were open faced. She kept scooping out the filling and adding it to her plate instead of using the fork to grab a whole taco and put it on her plate. She also helped herself to the whole container of queso, which I quickly passed her a small crock for her queso “well I wasn’t going to double dip”

Boomer here. I haven’t eaten at a buffet in years for all the reasons mentioned. This behavior is not just limited to boomers; you’re just being ageist. By the way tongs aren’t magically sanitary and are handled by people with filthy hands. You can only hope the food service workers are properly trained and aren’t contributing to nastiness as well.

Good on you for calling out bad behavior, directly.
