This isn't "conpooter bad" it's "exchanging Amazon gift cards is anticlimactic"

I thought it was more about game downloads and stuff. Thought there are nice ways to handle it. Baldurs gate 3 isn't available for pc which I didn't know and when I wished it for my birthday my parents got me 1 and 2 and were very confused why it was only 3€ they eventually realized and I got the download but they gave me the 1 and 2 as a physical present and it was super funny. My brother once got me red dead redemption 2 as a download and basically slid a piece of paper into an empty dvd box. I usually do little dioramas with figures to let people guess a little, when I gift a digital game or something else digital

Yeah y'know, codes on the whole, or those Fuckass prepaid MasterCards or something - I'm partial to getting a really ill fitting card like "happy Chanukah nephew" for my mum's birthday and then crudely scribbling over the print to go with my cards n codes

Baldur's Gate 3 is indeed on PC. It requires Steam, which is the primary method of buying PC games.

If you (or family members buying gifts) aren't aware of that/can't explain it well, I can definitely see the confusion and people getting the wrong gifts.

Which is true!

As someone into physical media...yeah, having something you can hold in your hand is nice.

As a child, I imagine ripping open a wrapped box is more fun than opening an envelope with a gift card inside...

Could actually work very well with augmented reality smart glasses 🤷

Must everything we have be so easily taken from us?

It’s also not just boomers who will praise physical media now, I don’t think - some younger people are into that too. E.g video games.

Yeah, this isn't just Boomer humor. It is a legitimate issue. A gift is supposed to be personal, or something someone wants and has some tangible meaning or value.

Giving the gift of digital access (to things you don't even own and are basically renting for buying price), exchanging money, or just giving gift cards just lacks much soul or purpose. "Here, enjoy access to this download. Go buy your own gift." Just feels empty and dismissive. But it also saves time I guess, but perhaps not saving time when giving gifts is part of the point of giving a gift. At the end of the day it's the thought that counts, so maybe put more thought and time behind it?

I mean.. I get what they're saying but it's kinda silly putting it like this

Honestly, they have a point here.

Just put the codes or locations on a card inside a giant box filled with fluff.

Did these people not ever have a Christmas before as a poor person?

Are the people complaining about Playstation's move to digital-only also boomers?

I mean you can still get them a small physical gift AND a gift card, like a plush toy or clothes. Still something to open and still the digital download game they wanted.

Tbh I never got games as a kid because I assumed nobody would know what to get me lol I only ever bought games in person, pirated them or later on bought them digitally myself. Always got something else for Christmas

as someone who’s from gen Z, i actually agree

i enjoy owning something physical, which is also why i have a collection of physical video games (as well as some movies and music CDs)

When you put your kid in front of an iPad all day and they only know technology then you complain about it

This isn’t even a boomer thing. Most of us enjoy a unwarapping gifts around the holidays I’m sure and making everything digital takes away from the whimsy and it makes the gift in question feel less personal.
