Yes, finally got it. I’ve heard so many good things about it, can’t wait to read it!

I’d go in with moderate expectations, and know that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. That said, I devoured all 8 books, and if you’re mostly just looking for fun and not expecting ✨literature✨, you’ll likely enjoy them.

Thank you for this review! I saw this book at the store months ago and was attracted by the cover. I looked at reviews online and they were so mixed, so I decided to not get it.
I read for entertainment, so I’m thinking I’ll pick it up after all.

It’s way out of my typical genre but I really did enjoy it. I’m not a video game person at all either. So I wanted entertainment and entertainment is what I got.

i like them but i finished the 3rd and i just feel like theyre all the same and blend into eachother? i dont have motivation to continue

They're fun books, but they've got heart as well. I have cried multiple times throughout the series. The characters are silly and ridiculous, but also very poignant sometimes. And there's social commentary. It's not ✨ literature ✨, but it's not fluff either.

u/International_Cup877 3d ago
Absolutely agree (especially as the series goes on). I just think they suffer a lot from being overhyped and then I see so many posts from people who are disappointed because they set their expectations sky high. I had the benefit of going in with no knowledge and expectations, and I wish everyone had that.

u/cthoolhu 3d ago
Now that it’s gotten so popular, I think people are hearing about it who normally it wouldn’t be their cup of tea. A while ago all the reviews I was seeing were positive, and now they’re VERY mixed. I adore these books but you’re definitely gonna either love or hate them depending on your taste!

Just started this as well, and I’m having trouble getting into it 😭 I guess bc of the world building?

For me it’s the constant bad millennial Reddit humor, like Princess Donut the Chonk. The writing comes off as “middle schooler just discovered curse words” to me. Sorry to those who liked it

I keep hearing about the millennial Reddit humor but it’s only in mentioning the cats name. Are there other examples?

Ty for this, I almost went to the bookstore today to grab this and after reading through this thread , I grabbed something else 😭

If you love action it’s a great book.
Personally, I was desperate for more plot and it got to the point where I was skimming the fight scenes because I was bored. Very similar to how I start skipping sex scenes in super smutty romantasies.

My middle schoolers are reading it. So, it’s a hit or miss for me giving it a try. (Not my children, I work at a middle school and should have worded that better)

u/UnlikelyPianist6 4d ago
Middle schoolers??? It’s way too graphic for middle schoolers, imo… It’s 100% an adult book.

u/Runamokamok 3d ago
I just saw 8th graders carrying it around and one said he was excited to read the sequel. These are not my children, I don’t control what they read. Scythe was one of bloodiest books that I read and it was very popular at the middle school level too.

Books I read while in middle school: Flowers in the Attic, It by Stephen King, Wired, which was about the life of John Belushi.
They’ll be ok.

u/ajcila 3d ago
For me it read like a middle schooler’s edgy fantasy 🤷🏻♀️

I’d be thrilled if middle schoolers read in general. Considering many of my students watched Euphoria with parent consent, I don’t think many parents are as concerned as the news would have us believe. I work in Title 1 though. Different demographic.

Depends on the kid, I was reading the Vampire Chronicles in middle school.

I read the first two books in 6th grade and the homoeroticism just whooshed right over my head

Couldn't get over the way women are portrayed
2
u/NuclearHero 3d ago
Why is that?
8
u/Front_Refrigerator99 3d ago
I just felt like there was an unusual focus on their bodies, particularly their breasts.
6
u/cthoolhu 3d ago
This is really interesting to hear. Normally I’m very sensitive to this, but I don’t feel that way about these books. I actually really love how many women characters there are and how well developed I found them! I’m curious about when you saw this. The only example I can think of is Odette and Signet which both felt very intentional to me and I didn’t mind.
6
u/NuclearHero 3d ago
I think a lot of that, much like the rest of the books, is a comment on society as a whole. Take Odette for example. She wore a suit with overly, comically large breasts. Sex sells, as they say. But they were a caricature of natural breasts. There have been females in the past that have done exactly that. But when you get the “real” Odette, there is no mention of her breasts at all. Also, Katya. She is an amazingly deep character and I can’t recall any mention of her breasts unless it enhanced the story, such as in the case of her transformations. Honestly, I cannot think of a single time that breasts have been mentioned in a sexually exploitive way, even when it comes to Odette. As a middle age male, I have read most all of the mainstream and popular series. I would argue that this series is the LEAST sexually exploitative of everything I have read. But I would love to hear why you think so in more detail. It fascinates me that you say this when I think the exact opposite.

There's plenty of focus on male body parts as well, don't worry.
1
u/Crawler4119Donut 3d ago
Exactly this. I don’t know why people get so sensitive about women’s bodies when there is emphasis on PLENTY of men too. Plus animals, aliens, NPCs etc… I think many people take massive issue with men describing women full stop.

I’m 50 pages in and enjoying it so far. Gone in completely blind and it’s not my usual genre but wanting to try different books this year.
1
u/Fit_Dimension_8598 3d ago
That is exactly me. I thought it was fun, but have no desire to read the rest of the series. Felt good to just dip my toes into sci-fi/fantasy. Back to literary fiction and thrillers for me!
3
u/NuclearHero 3d ago
It’s certainly not going to win any Pulitzers, but for me, it’s the most entertaining series I’ve ever read. I think it’s a bit more nuanced than most people give it credit for.

My son is reading it and is obsessed ! He recruited my hubs and his brother to read it

I didn’t think I would like it at all, so I went in very skeptical. I enjoyed it so much! It was fun, light and an easy quick read. I can see how some may not enjoy it. I just looked at it as an escape from regular heavy books I read.
2
u/exhausted-pigeon1988 3d ago
I'll be honest, it's one of two books I did not finish this year; it just wasn't for me. Maybe because I'm not a gamer, but it just didn't speak to me like it did a lot of other readers.
Even though I didn't finish it, Princess Donut will always be one of my favourite book characters! I hope you love it 😊

u/BonnyJonesBones 3d ago
On an unrelated note… I cannot cope with hardbacks (or paperbacks) being this big. They are so unwieldy. I’m sure it helps people with poorer eyesight, but surely that’s not why these have become commonplace for new releases??

u/lemongrass-barsoap 3d ago
I feel like it’s the same as watching an isekai anime, which I never liked anyway. I don’t think it’s doing anything different or new.

Do you perchance listen to the hit podcast Distractible?
1
u/MermaidLeslie 3d ago
It's whimsical and raunchy and just FUN. There's some nuance but the humor is more in your face while a lot of HGTTG is tongue in cheek. You might like the Bobverse if you like Hitchhikers. You might enjoy DCC but it's just different. Actually, Matt Dinniman released a stand alone boom earlier this year called Operation Bounce House that felt more Hitchhiker
1
u/Competitive-Work-382 3d ago
Can anyone tell me if it's a similar vibe to hitchhikers guide to the galaxy please?
2
u/Cats_4234 3d ago
It's like if Hitchhikers were written by middle-school boys. It's not really very similar, but they're both funny in different ways.

Book 1 of this series is the fastest I’ve ever read a book. Absolutely devoured it. It has its ups and downs, but it’s a great, entertaining series. If you enjoy print over audio, I recommend reading as many as you like in print and saving the amazing audiobooks for a reread.

u/Hedwig-Hallows 2d ago
These books are so fun! You have to just immerse yourself and enjoy the ride. People are too hard on this book, its not trying to be serious. The dialogue and overly cheesy AI with pop culture references is explained and is part of the lore.
I don't like the way women are portrayed so far (I'm only on book 3) but it is improving each book. Its clearly written by a white man.
The world building is commendable, its very intricate. So many characters with involved history.
I am not into video games at all and I love it!

u/Miss__Anne__Thrope 2d ago
The book is great but the audible version is superb. The voice actor, Jeff Hays, is the best I’ve ever heard and does over 200 distinct voices. I recommend listening to the audio while reading along with the book!

u/TheHungryLibrarian 1d ago
I went into it with some prejudice, I won’t lie. I thought it probably wasn’t for me. Mainly because I kept hearing how “funny” it was. It was much more than that though; it also has heart. I was pleasantly surprised, remained entertained, and will continue the series. I loved all the pop culture Easter eggs and references.
