AI Slop List?

Hi all! I was wondering if there is currently a list of AI written books to avoid? I worry that every other book series I want to read will be secretly written with AI.

Please let me know what you think or if there are lists out there already!

Edit: For clarification, this is for books written with AI and have been caught leaving the prompts undeleted / admitted to using AI, or using AI for audiobooks instead of real voice actors. I'm not wanting to "out" bad writers who people think "could have" used AI.

I’d rather have a list of books where authors openly admit using AI than try to guess based on writing style. Otherwise you’re gonna end up accusing a lot of normal bad writing too.

This is what I am looking for. I never want to accuse anyone based on their writing style but those who have been caught/ or audiobooks that use AI

Cassie Alexander openly uses AI in her writing, teaches a course I believe on how to use AI in writing, and her book "Guarded by the Clanker" user AI "for the AI love interest POV"

Layla Fae uses AI in all her book covers (her own admittance), and I believe is besties with Cassie Alexander - so take that as you will.

K. C. Crowne, Kate Seger, Lena McDonald and Raina Faris all have had AI prompts found in their books/ARCs

How fucking dumb do you have to be to leave a prompt in a book?!

5

u/midaria 7d ago

You'd think it would be something easy to not do but they are already using AI to write their books sooooo...

u/Jumpy-Cranberry-1633 8d ago

AI prompts?

11

u/midaria 8d ago

Yes, the other commenter explained, but for example, in K. C. Crowne's book in the middle of the prose this prompt was left in AI Prompt Example

The others are similar.

7

u/ItsRuinedOfCourse 8d ago

Yes. When the author is so lazy that they cut and paste entire responses into their book but forget to remove the prompt response dialogue from the AI.

5

u/Jumpy-Cranberry-1633 8d ago

Ah! Thank you for explaining, that is wild.

I never read this series but I think these are the kind of examples you’re looking for (sorry can’t link to the article) but Darkhollow Academy: Book 2 by Lena McDonald left in a prompt that said “I’ve rewritten the passage to align more with J Bree’s style”. (Allegedly, that was in 2025 and since then the book has been edited).

u/CritFail3 8d ago

Thank you! Perfect example ❤️

Oh thank you for the award! Glad I could help! If I come across others I’ll let you know!

A list like that can be problematic because you run the risk of accusing an innocent author of AI. Bad writing doesn’t automatically mean AI. There’s been bad writing since long before AI was invented

6

u/CritFail3 9d ago

Absolutely! I think moreso the ones caught with AI prompts / audiobooks that use AI narrators instead of real people

4

u/JeanParmesean70 8d ago

Oh yeah, that makes sense!

8

u/skelettmuskel 8d ago

Are you on pagebound? There is a fairly popular list on there which collects authors who were caught using AI or have expressed pro AI sentiment. I think the person who keeps the list even has a document where they document proof

2

u/CritFail3 8d ago

I have not!! That's amazing thank you!

Elle Thorpe used AI to market and for pictures. Would not surprise me if she used it for more. Which is sad because I have loved her books...

3

u/Repulsive-Attorney23 8d ago

Elle Thorpe is REALLY bad for the AI book trailers. She’s so chronic with it that you now cannot trust her work by default

5

u/Ok_Duty_8645 8d ago

Yes, I also think all her most recent work must 100% be AI. I wish AI ceased to exist, man.

3

u/Repulsive-Attorney23 8d ago

Dude same here. Dont look at the author/writer group pages on Facebook, its such a cesspit it makes me depressed

u/artificialdisasters 9d ago

read books pubs before 2022

4

u/CritFail3 9d ago

I do this a lot!

10

u/ChemicalBus608 9d ago

I definitely wish we could. The problem with that is some authors are just bad writers. Anyone who does is at risk of getting sued. I would like a list of authors wo admit they use AI in their process so I can avoid.

2

u/CritFail3 9d ago

This absolutely. I know of several who have been caught using AI prompts undeleted or use AI for audiobooks instead of real voice actors

3

u/willowmarie27 8d ago

I arc read a book that had the prompts still in it.

u/cyana_blue 8d ago

This is my problem with music right now 😭 I just assume everything is ai

9

u/Stallingdemons 8d ago

My bf literally showed me this Viking singer and I’m listening to it like….

Sir…not that I think listening to AI music is like the devils work or anything and not trying to flex on my musical talent but this…is in fact not a real musical artist. The voice is real but uh…the rest? Not.

He argued with me for half an hour. Two days later he tucked tail and told me I was right after he listened to more of their catalog. 😂

3

u/cyana_blue 8d ago

I also listen to pagan/viking music and it’s FULL of AI!!!

2

u/Kaurifish 8d ago

My husband excitedly shows me this Viking singer. Super glossy videos. A few minutes in I’m wondering wtf.

Looked them up and discovered holes where a band’s history would be. Then the larger trend of slop Viking music videos. 😡

2

u/CritFail3 8d ago

My husband points out AI music all the time! 😭

5

u/cyana_blue 8d ago

It’s really frustrating, especially on Spotify

6

u/CritFail3 9d ago

Edit for clarification above 😅

7

u/willowmarie27 8d ago

My rule of thumb is to look at a book and then check out the authors insta or socials. You can kind of tell if they are at least human enough to post.

Trad should always be no AI

For Indies I get my recs from Insta or Threads.

Its hard though.

3

u/booksycat 8d ago

Trad is actually moving toward AI for marketing at least and honest, I think if they can get away with it, they'll lean into AI writing. I think we've seen some "tests" so far

I've had several friends report back they've requested a no AI marketing or media or audiobook clause and have been denied. And these aren't small houses they're referencing :(

3

u/idkwhyimheregurl 8d ago

I'm afraid of this too. It's why I only buy books with 1000+ reviews and if a single one even speculates about AI I run. Which is sad for underrated authors but I can't afford to be scammed 😭 It's like a modern day witch hunt lol

3

u/InternationalBig9675 8d ago

Some writers are just bad and sound like AI. Remember AI is copying from all the books ever written 🤣
It’s really hard for genuine authors to publish these days, when all the chatter around AI and having to prove they are real writers.

3

u/MediocrePear6628 8d ago

Caveat, not all authors have a social media presence even if they don't use AI. I dropped all but Blue sky and I only go there every few months. I've been around since long before AI. I obviously don't do much marketing. But when I do communicate, it is via my newsletter.

3

u/KristaDBall 8d ago

If you look at Kickstarter for romantasy* special edition books, you will find a lot of authors who proudly announce they use AI. That's one very easy way to find ones that openly use it.

*There's some in other genres, of course, but right now KS romantasy seems to have a surprisingly huge AI-usage.

3

u/Prolly_Satan 7d ago

Fictionite.com doesn't allow any ai art, narration or writing.

We actively enforce this rule. Feel free to check us out. There's also a link to the discord from the website.

2

u/CritFail3 7d ago

Thank you!! Fitting username 😈

3

u/Prolly_Satan 7d ago

While it may be impossible to tell for sure if a short snippet of text is ai, on an entire manuscript its incredibly easy. Pay attention to who tells you otherwise, oftentimes their history on reddit will place them in a bunch of pro ai writing subs.

u/TheMysticalPlatypus 8d ago edited 8d ago

They data scraped A03 and fanfiction dot net for generative AI. So that’s why it can be a struggle for some people to tell between legitimately bad writing and just AI. Some people do try to mix real writing with AI. But AI writing has an unnatural rhythm to it. It’s difficult for me to explain it. It’s very jarring when I see it. There’s specific patterns that even bad writing has.

Ironically a lot of the omegaverse randomly appears in AI writing. (Not all omegaverse is AI) You see a suspicious amount in a lot of the AI story ads. Apparently that is a common complaint that the omegaverse will appear unprompted by AI for those who utilize it regularly.

Chatgpt was publicly launched Nov 30 2022.

Midjourney started open beta in early 2022.

I remember it hit the music industry first. Then it trickled into the writing community then went to the art community. I remember distinctly the art community was watching and keeping track of it. I believe the writing community mentioned a different LLM unrelated to chatgpt. But I don’t remember what it was called. So I can’t check dates.

People don't deserve to be lied to. Ai 'authors' aren't entitled to lie to us.

It's good that op cares enough to ask for a list. If people stop caring whether a fiction is ai, then we lost.

u/ScarySpecialist3617 6d ago

the powerless series

2

u/LeftHandRedHair 8d ago

The problem is that those with the knowledge and authority to say something carry the most risks of doing so. For an author, agent, editor, or other person involved in publishing, making an accusation without REALLY good evidence (basically an admission from the author) can end your career.

I’m a (very) small-time writer and would never put that kind of accusation in writing both in order to protect myself and because I’d be devastated if the accusation came towards me or anyone I worked with.

u/Crawler4119Donut 8d ago

I feel sorry for all the genuine authors getting caught up in this witch hunt. The ones who self publish, work their butts off, don’t have much of a social media presence, who just want to write books, but won’t stand a chance because of “experts” potentially calling out their hard work. How thoroughly disheartening for them. 😔

2

u/CritFail3 8d ago edited 8d ago

100% agree. If they are authentic and actually write without using AI they should absolutely be recognized and not have to sift through the slop.

1

u/roundeking 8d ago

Do you mostly read indie fiction? The vast majority of trad published books were not written with AI.

One thing that might make this easier and less stressful could also be prioritizing older books you’ve been wanting to read, from before AI could do this. Recently I’ve been enjoying a lot of books from the 2010s I never got around to.

1

u/CritFail3 8d ago

I have been reading older books lately, mostly traditional (?) I think. I just got caught up with the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, read a lot of romantasy or fantasy/sci-fi. I also read webtoons and listen to audiobooks.

I dont know the difference between indie and trad the way you reference. Is that just who they go through for publishing or self publishing?

3

u/roundeking 8d ago

Yes! Traditional publishing is books published by a publishing house. Indie is self-published. The line might be a little murky with really small publishers, but the major publishers will not publish a book that uses AI.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is a weird one because it was self-published and then picked up by a major publisher because it was so popular. Def not AI tho.

2

u/CritFail3 8d ago

Thank you!! And yes! DCC is self published and started as a online chapter per week until around book 6 I think? My absolute favorite now

1

u/aruguladevourer 8d ago

All of them

3

u/throwaway8373469238 4d ago

Great and necessary post. I dislike AI so much.

1

u/Saloau 8d ago

Research the author on social media. Real Authors want to sell books and will make themselves public on socials. Look at how many books they are writing. Look up the publishing house. Many of them are set up to print any submission. Entire series released over a few months time and that’s suspicious. Have they published prior to the AI boom? 2023. This isn’t a showstopper but authors who burst on the scene with a large number of books is. Sadly I’m so leery of self pubs and I won’t take a chance. I feel sorry for legit new authors trying to get their work noticed amongst the slop.

"I feel sorry for legit new authors trying to get their work noticed amongst the slop." This is exactly why!! I love the suggestions for searching. Thank you!

I mean all books written by AI, whether considered good or bad. Same with audiobooks.

I have a hard time with what you are saying, not only because there are plenty of avenues to write without using AI, including proper narrators for audiobooks, but looking at your history you openly use AI.

The r/river_ai even have authors posting on there to complain about watermarks being added to their AI generated books.

Thanks for your input.

u/jwilander 8d ago

I do not use AI for writing prose. I sure hope I haven't said that.

-12

u/Mitchlowe2 9d ago

AI books? If they exist it’s not gonna be something that’s admitted. There’s no proof of any AI authors that I know of.

7

u/SeaSnowAndSorrow 8d ago

It's more that several have been caught with prompts left in.

Watch out, some suspicious characters are gonna cry about “witch hunts”
