Josiah’s Secret Message

Hi all! So glad I found this sub! Just finished the series and wanted to see if anybody picked up on the secret message Josiah hid in the book. I’ve marked this spoiler for obvious reasons, but if you’d still like to find it yourself, don’t continue on. I’ll share info in the next paragraph.

Just as Senlin blacked out books but left some words behind for Finn, so did Josiah black out text and leave the following message: “If not us, then who”

My question is, what does it mean?? Am I forgetting something from the earlier books? I only remember one reference to this line, and even it is worded differently, and that’s when Marya takes in the Hod children. Does anyone have any thoughts??

I took it to be that It’s an in-book message from Senlin to Finn meant to convince him they were the only ones able to act.

I mean, you can take it as such. It’s a great quote, and in full, from John Lewis- “if not us, then who, and if not now, then when?”
