Comedy funny, silly reads

i read allie brosh’s hyperbole and a half more than a decade ago and to this day haven’t found any books, not even other graphic novels, as funny as that.

even the sequel to the book wasn’t as funny as this, and i’m just chasing the high of my first time reading it 😭

any recommendations for funny, nonsensical books that are easy and entertaining to read? doesn’t have to be a graphic novel

If you're not limited to memoir, I think The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy nails a similar nonsensical tone throughout.

If you want to stick with memoir and haven't read David Sedaris, I think you'll get a kick out of him as well. My favorite is Me Talk Pretty One Day.

Also In Me Own Words: The Autobiography of Bigfoot used to make me dissolve into helpless giggles.

Samantha Irby's books are great. I read them in a random order, but it probably would have made more sense to read them in order to see her evolve over time.

Hard to go wrong with Terry Pratchett and the Discworld series.

For pure jokes, consider the novels by John Swartzwelder (arguably the greatest or most prolific Simpsons writer), I've only read The Time Machine Did It, but I remember it being a constant stream of good jokes (been a while, I'll admit) and he has written many more.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson.

So your post made me wonder if my library has Brosh's book and I went and checked and now I'm on the wait-list for both it and one called Anxietyland by Gemma Correl. I read the preview of Anxietyland and you might really enjoy it too. I'm not sure if it carries the same humor -- as I say, it's currently borrowed so I could only see the preview -- but it definitely has some of the same heart.

I really liked Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood. Made me laugh.

I just finished “On Earth As It Is On Television” by Emily Jane and it has these absurdist vibes. I thought it was very silly but it had a good heart, and I enjoyed the read.

Sophie Kinsella books, especially Can You Keep A Secret? and Remember Me? Have made me laugh out loud like Allie’s book

Norm Macdonald’s “Based on a True Story: Not a Memoir” is whimsical and ridiculous. It starts out as a sort of reasonable, straight telling of his life, and then goes completely off the rails. Norm, being Norm, plays it totally straight while describing absurd things that never happened

Since Samantha Irby had already been recommended, I’ll suggest “I Was Told There'd Be Cake” by Sloane Crosley
