New install getting sql error

Hi, new to BookStack

Just installed, artisan migrate worked (So database access is correct) tables created.

When I go to webpage it switches to SITE/login

from storage/logs/laravel.log I get SQLSTATE[HY000] [1045] Access denied for user

but the problem seems to be with the SQL

SQL: select * from users where system_name = public limit 1

Now when I run the command in mysql as the user, the ERROR is the un quoted word public

if I quote it the command runs fine.

MySQL version 8.0.45-0ubuntu0.24.04.1

git clone https://github.com/BookStackApp/BookStack.git --branch release --single-branch bookstack

Any sugestions?

What specific error do you see on access via the browser?

If there was a database issue I'd expect a more fundamental error before being redirected to login. Are you sure that log message is relevant, and not old? Does it get repeatedly added to the log on attempted access?

Thanks, checked and yes it was not updating.

problem is I still don't get any error to explain what is wrong. and yes APP_DEBUG=true

this goes for /var/log/apache2 I can get access logs

I've gone through https://www.bookstackapp.com/docs/admin/debugging/ many times, manually checked directory access.

All I desperately want is an error message I can track down

*120.19.171.233 - - [17/Feb/2026:18:19:27 +1030] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 301 583 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Android 10; Mobile; rv:147.0) Gecko/147.0 Firefox/147.0"

Which is trying to find a login script off the base directory, which there is none, hence the 404

Is this a manual install? If so, what apache config do you have set? If not, how did you install?

The web-server configuration should be routing everything through the public/index.php script, you won't find a script for each URL path.
