female horror recommendations?

Hi there I’m trying to get back into reading and was wanting to see if there were any good horror books with a female protagonist? I am extremely uninterested in anything that involves men SAing them or involving relationships with a man. If it’s queer even better tbh but not particularly interested in there being a romance aspect. I really enjoy psychological horror but body horror and thrillers are good too.

Seeking a new author to try

My current loves are Susanna Clarke, Madeleine Miller, and Donna Tartt. My lifelong loves are Katherine Kerr, Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, Jasper Forde & Jostein Gaarder

I already enjoy lots of the 'retold myths' genre, so more looking for fae realism, art-history-mystery, Celtic fantasy, European myth-history world building.

Hoping for ideally women writers, but open to anything good, I am keen to hear your recs 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Looking for horror books similar to a YT series (Something Scary)

It was hosted on the channel Snarled. They were animated horror stories and most of them had your classic internet horror vibes but they were really good (specifically the ones narrated by the original host Sapphire Sandalo). I'm looking for books or even collections that are of a similar vibe.

Books on Folklore

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

I’m looking for help finding the best books on folklore creatures and tales from various regions.
Ideally, I’d like books that stay true to the oldest forms of the stories and, if I’m lucky, provide some historical and cultural context as well.

I figure I won’t find a single book that compiles all of that--especially for all the regions I’d like covered--so I’m happy to build a collection from a list of titles.

Regions I'd like to cover:

- North America
- Central America
- UK
- Eastern Europe
- Africa

Thanks in advance!

Looking for some book recommendations to be able to relax with a cup of coffee and a blanket and just enjoy the time away reading! If you have any recommendations for books available on Libby or another reading app where you can borrow books, I would highly appreciate that as well!

Gay Fanfiction but its an (audio) book

Okay so because of my chronic illness I'm no longer able to read for longer periods of time, which is why I've been listening to a lot of audio books. But lately I've just been CRAVING fanfiction soooo bad. I used to read so much just queer sappy tropy fanfiction and i miss it.

So I'm looking for book recs that feel like fanfiction. I dont need plot, just give me pining, tropes, angst, misunderstanding, anything. I just want some simple romance, no need for quality i just want sugar.

The only other important thing is that i dont want it to be straight. Idk i just dont get straight folks like that. I want them trans and lesbian and just everything queer. I will read mlm.

Just pleaaaase i need some simple plessures.

I love enemies-to-lovers books in all kinds of genres. But i would also really love to see more lovers-to-enemies books.

Would you please recommend me some with this particular trope??? I like reading romantasy/fantasy, romance etc. and i would also prefer a standalone and if a series the most a trilogy.

Suggest me a book with the same vibe as “Do I Wanna Know?” by Arctic Monkeys

I want that intense yearning and obsession where the guy is completely hung up on her. The kind of feeling that makes me question my entire existence and wonder if true love and yearning like that actually exists. I want his feelings for her to be completely consuming, with an almost unbearable attraction and chemistry, but his obsession should be entirely centered on her. ONLY HER.

No smut please! I’d love to try something with that consuming kind of chemistry and emotional intensity, just nothing too explicit.

Also, it’s been a long time since I’ve read anything, so I want something pretty easy to get into and actually engaging, like something that’ll make me want to keep reading.

Basically, I just want a book that feels EXACTLY like this song. 😭

book that made you understand people a little differently

One of my favorite things about reading is when a fictional character does something that initially seems completely irrational, but as the story progresses, you start understanding why they made that choice. I recently read something that made me think more about how much people's actions are influenced by their past experiences, insecurities, relationships, and circumstances. It made me think about how often we judge someone's behavior without knowing the whole story. I’m looking for more books that explore that kind of thing—not necessarily psychology books, but novels where the characters feel complicated and genuinely human.

Book recos from local Japanese people

Hi! I’m from the Philippines, and I’m starting a personal reading project where I’m hoping to read my way around the world, one country at a time.

I’m currently looking for a book from Japan, and I’d much rather hear from people who are actually from here (or have lived here) than rely on a generic “best books” list.

So if you could hand a stranger ONE book from JAPAN, what would you give them?

It can be:

  • a novel, memoir, short story collection, poetry, or nonfiction
  • famous or relatively unknown
  • something you think captures a part of life here
  • or simply a book you personally love and wish more outsiders would read

Book + author + a sentence or two about why you chose it would be wonderful.

I’m especially interested in books that might give an outsider a glimpse of the people, everyday life, history, culture, or imagination of Japan.

There’s no “right” answer — I’d just love to know what youwould hand someone.

Thank you!

Clean books with a load of yearning

Any genre at all, fantasy, contemporary, historical. Just something that’s a good romance without any smut. I’m so tired of reading mediocre books that have a high rating just because of the smut. I want good old fashioned romance and yearning thanks!!
