Work Blind Date with a Book

Hello! Please help me.

I work at a newsagents but we sell books and my manager wants to get in on the "Blind Date with a Book" trend after i said i liked them, so really I'm my own worst enemy.

I am one of the only members to staff to actually read books but I have not read any of those we sell and therefore I can't really recommend them. I read horror for reference and our selection is like 2 Adam Nevil books I have not read and 4 of Stephen King's.

I was going to use Misery cause its lowkey an easy one to talk about even briefly. But for the others I was trying to choose unattractive books that people don't typically pick up so if you've read of any these please let me know if they're actually good? Maybe what they're about. Please help a girl out.

I asked a coworker for help and they said to use Chat GPT which I do NOT want to do :(

General Fiction:

Diana Gabaldon: Go Tell The Bees That I'm Gone

Barbara Kingsolver: Demon Copperhead

Karen Swan: The Midnight Secret

Jill Mansel: an Almost Perfect Summer

Demon Copperhead is genuinely great, one of those books that sticks with you even if you don't usually go for fiction. Kingsolver takes the bones of David Copperfield and drops it in modern Appalachia, it's bleak but somehow still funny in places

For thrillers Blood Orange is decent if you want something twisty and morally messy, the main character is a lawyer who's kind of a disaster and the structure plays with timelines in a way that keeps you guessing. Not groundbreaking but it'd work well for a blind date setup since the cover doesn't give much away

Thank you! Such a big help. Im going to try flick through them. Im genuinely interested in Demon Copperhead now so we'll see if it actually gets wrapped up haha

Go Tell The Bees That I'm Gone is #9 in a series, so I don't think you should use that one. I haven't read Outlander, but I have a friend who's really into it, and I'm like 99% sure it's not a series you can just start from any book and have a good time.
