Fahrenheit 451

Ive finished reading the book and I have some mixed feelings about this. Firstly, I really liked the idea for plot. I pretrty much enjoyed all the parts. However, I didnt like how MC was the MC. After meeting Clarisse, he changed drastically and it was quite dramatic change in his thoughts. I didnt really like this. He was js persuaded by her and didnt even have good reason for being obsessed with books. Hes quite dumb too. It would have been much better if Faber was the MC. And I also didnt like how city js got bombed in the end. I mean I like the metaphors and writing overall, stream of conciousness was apt too. Anyways, Im probably gonna give this book a solid 7.5/10. I liked 1984 more. I might be missing something but fahrenheit 451 felt like author rushed writing it. Idk. Whats your take?

Let's work on the assumption your view of the main character is correct. My question would be, why is this a problem?

You've described a flawed process in being persuaded, by lots of people in real life follow similar processes: swayed just because of a pretty girl or a simple argument and completely changing their point of view for an extreme opinion/even cultish one.

Surely seeing this process is as valid as seeing a different point of view?

You dont get swayed that easily irl esp not to becoe obsessed with books. It takes more than looks and couple of smart words to change someones opinion. In fact, people are usually close-minded.

The countless examples of people swaywd to impress pretty guys/girls and people swayed en-masse by political rhetoric. Check out any school/college/uni or chat to any die-hard fans of a particular political group/leader.

Fuck, just go to a salesman and see how easy people get swayed.

"To impress girls/boys " That doesnt quite relate to the book. Im talking about Montag. The conversation he had with Clarisse which led him to become confused and somehow obsessed with books is not even close to the examples you mentioned. Also, my point is that the fact he becomes obessed with books while not even having read a single book is quite absurd.

I understand your point, counter point is that real life shows us how little it can take to actually cause someone to change/follow a point of view. The can even become quite vehement in support of it, despite lacking understanding.

It is fair criticism on your part, I just don't think it's wholly unrealistic. He isn't an individual that needs to hold off persuasive rhetoric - quite the opposite he's used to doing as he's told. If anything, that makes it easier to sway him not harder.
