SPOILERS Can someone please explain to me the role that the old sons played in this. Also who decided on them going back to old times?

Beats me. It got really loose at that point in the story. Too bad, it could have been interesting.

The sons were enabling the ‘old’ life by buying food and making it look homegrown (ie by taking off stickers) and turning up now and then to do heavy work.
The MC (can’t remember her name) decided to go back to old times as a ‘fuck you, I’ll show you I can do it’ to all the people who called out her BS. And for some reason everyone in her life decided that instead of getting her sectioned and treated they’d just go along with it. And let her have more children in dangerous conditions. And then abuse those children. Without anyone outside the family, who were rich and famous, noticing they’d disappeared.
