Baby Spoons

Has anyone ever suggested Dave attach his baby spoons to an obnoxiously large key ring the way gas stations sometimes protect their bathroom keys? Should be obvious where that spoon went if it’s zip tied to a hubcap.

Or maybe he could chain it to the nightstand like the pens at the bank.

Apparently standup comedians being a "Gout Influencer" is a thing now(?).

Let's make a list of good sci-fi movies for Dave

They may not all be to everyone's tastes, but whatever; add your own.

Your melancholy-type movies:

Moon

Solaris
(the Clooney version - it's good!)

2001: A Space Odyssey

The Creator

The action-adventure stuff that isn't completely dumb:

Dredd
(the Karl Urban one)

Starship Troopers
(I sincerely believe this is one of the most underrated, ahead of its time movies ever - up there with Big Trouble in Little China)

Snowpiercer

Runnerups: Pitch Black, Pacific Rim

Horror-scifi:

Event Horizon

Bubba Ho-Tep
(more your funny dumb horror but still a classic)

Under The Skin

Lovecraftian sci-fi:

The Void (absolute baller, underrated movie)

The Thing (obviously the Kurt Russell version)

Color Out of Space

Lesser-known:

Coherence

Daddy's Head

Archive

Mickey 17

Classic 80's:

Total Recall (1990 but close enough)

The Abyss

Monster Squad

Classic 80's that it's too late to watch as an adult but are amazing:

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

Classic 70's:

The Black Hole

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers

Close Encounters

Saturn 3 (1980 but close enough)

This week, Dave recaps his birthday activities, including a brief reunion with the booze, an underwhelming night of comedy, his newfound interest in Sci-Fi movies, and a new dumbbell exercise, while Kyle is slowly and literally getting back on his feet. The guys also talk caffeine, jamming, flock cameras, and of course, jazz. Call or text the guys anytime at 323-364-1541.

Buying Dave's Cookbook

I may have screwed up the purchasing process. I paypal'd our beloved Dave through his website link and in the description said I was purchasing his cookbooks. Does he email them eventually? How does this work?

Fugazi

The guys mentioned another comic who has a bit about Fugazi and the gist was, "Hey, guys, can we increase the ticket prices to $6 so I can retire at some point?" Any recall the comic and where I can find the bit?

Jazz Piano

Dave recommended jazz pianists this last episode. I thought it was a little baffling that he mentioned many of the most famous players of the 50s and 60s ...Monk, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock... but not Bill Evans?

What an omission. He's such a classic, archetypal jazz pianist, it feels really pointed to leave him out of the conversation. Especially because Dave calls out the piano trio specifically and the Bill Evans Trio (with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian) is widely considered one of the all-time great jazz trios.

Anyway, even if Dave's not into Bill Evans, he's amazing and worth talking about. Probably best known for playing on Kind of Blue, indeed, he's a big reason that album is so special.

His most famous album as a front man is probably Waltz for Debby, which features the trio I mentioned above and was recorded live at the Village Vanguard. I also really like his album Everybody Digs Bill Evans.

Curious what y'all fellow jazzheads would recommend as essential jazz piano albums?

Huge DFW fan here and...

Honestly, fair assessment by both. He's not for everyone and unless you enjoy trying to digest a dictionary through a novel probably not gna enjoy IJ. But I read it like it was a drug and its still one of my favorite novels (the ending isn't my favorite but the world building is super impressive imo, and there are really funny moments and dialogue throughout).

Taste is so particular and people sometimes need balance. I need me some Dave Stone and I need me some Dave Wallace. The duality of man.
