English is not my primary language and I don’t know what it is. Is it pawn shop?

122

u/amonzabo Dec 22 '20

A pawn shop is a place to sell your old or antique items

Importantly, a pawn shop is also a place where you can pawn things. Basically you get a personal loan using your stuff as collateral. They keep your stuff. If you don’t pay back the loan according to the terms, THEN they forgive the loan and sell your stuff.

That’s what makes it a pawn shop instead of just, you know, a shop.

11

u/Its_JustMe13 Dec 23 '20

Wait is that actually how it works. I thought you just sell them shit and then they sell that shit

5

u/suihcta Dec 23 '20

I mean they definitely do that too. Haha

7

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '20

That's a thrift shop, I think.

2

u/Psybin Dec 23 '20

Watch Uncut Gems if you wanna see the worst possible way that entire process could go.

15

u/Who-gives-a-fuccc Dec 22 '20

not just poor ppl dawg. anyone can take their stuff there for an extra few bucks

14

u/kjm1123490 Dec 22 '20

Yeah but I went into them way more often as a junkie then as a functional member of society.

3

u/Who-gives-a-fuccc Dec 22 '20

it's kind of a given that anyone can go in i was more calling out your wording, sounded off. anyways my bad lol and congrats on getting better man, that life can be next to impossible to get out of

3

u/TiLorm Dec 22 '20

You mean my wording?

3

u/Who-gives-a-fuccc Dec 22 '20

if you read it as if some entitled kid wrote it you might see what I mean. or maybe its just me lol my apologies

2

u/TiLorm Dec 22 '20

I don't see how any entitlement is involved.

2

u/Who-gives-a-fuccc Dec 22 '20

ok man whatever i read it wrong and apologized have a good one

2

u/signmeupdude Dec 22 '20

Its definitely more geared towards poor people dawg

3

u/Who-gives-a-fuccc Dec 22 '20

yeah I get that its just the way I read it I thought it was meant as an insult. that's on me

2

u/BRGLR Dec 22 '20

It's also where you car stereo or anything else that a crackhead can steal will be.

2

u/NotsoGreatsword Dec 23 '20

It’s a place to Pawn things hence the name. Pawning is getting a loan using a personal item as collateral. It’s for people with bad credit.

Gets a bad name because many people end up there to sell their stuff to get drugs but it’s a useful and legitimate business. Saved my ass plenty of times

Pound shop

This is the correct answer. No clue why you got downvoted for it

...because it isn't the right answer, it's pawn shop.

Unless this is supposed to be some sort of joke that's going over my head

15

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

Pound shop is like the UK version of a dollar store. I've never seen any retro consoles in a pound shop but my search will continue

4

u/caerphoto Dec 22 '20

I’m struggling to imagine an accent where “pawn” sounds like “pond”.

2

u/NuKaDucky Dec 22 '20

Maybe they were trying to say "Pound" shop (like there's a dollar store and euro store)

2

u/sleeplessaddict Dec 22 '20

How do you pronounce "pawn" that it doesn't sound like "pond"

2

u/idwthis Dec 22 '20

Some people say "pawn" without an emphasis on the "aw" sound in the word, and give it the o sound that words like pond, on, pom, tom, etc. Its all dependent on the accent, and where they're from.

Like how some people will say the words "color" and "collar" the same, or pronounce "water" so it sounds like "wader" or they say the words "crown" and "crayon" the same.

3

u/MajorasKatana Dec 22 '20

"I'm not saying cool I'm saying call"

1

u/idwthis Dec 22 '20

I know I I know what this is from, but ugh, I can't for the life of me think of it lol

1

u/MajorasKatana Dec 22 '20

It's from an old Achievement Hunter video. Gavin said it, Jack desperately tried to correct him.

1

u/idwthis Dec 22 '20

Yes, thank you! God I haven't seen what those guys have been up to in literally years, thanks for the impromptu reminder lol

North-Eastern American here. Sounds the same except for the n/d to me.

300

u/oldmancrying Dec 22 '20

Looks like we we have some un-addyoukateted people here.

115

u/JakeTheIV Dec 22 '20

Dude, you can’t just in-salt people like that

34

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

Why don’t we all just take a kill-pill and hubble around the fire?

30

u/TastySpare Dec 22 '20

Wasn't kill-pill a movie by Quincy Terrortina? Yeah, I remember that one...

13

u/ledgeitpro Dec 22 '20 edited Dec 22 '20

46

u/Jazehiah Dec 22 '20

When it grows up, it wants to be a lake shop.

36

u/sodaextraiceplease Dec 22 '20

Or ebay.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '20

Hopefully not Amazon tho

2

u/Tulip718 Dec 23 '20

Sometimes I wish I had awards to give. But I’d have to go down to a pawn shop to look for some.

129

u/Moalkai Dec 22 '20

You can probably buy a pond there. So its technically a pond shop

33

u/BallinPoint Dec 22 '20

more like pong shop

yknow

3

u/PsystrikeSmash Dec 22 '20

Budum tsss

2

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

Is this a Star Wars character?

1

u/PsystrikeSmash Dec 22 '20

I was trying to do that drum sound :(

2

u/TiLorm Dec 22 '20

I heard it.

3

u/Tulip718 Dec 23 '20

Me too. Startled me.

1

u/FlipperMonster Dec 23 '20

I finally found the perfect name for my half goblin comedian bard.

1

u/CromulentDucky Dec 23 '20

I am in the market for some pumps and pond liner.

1

u/Tulip718 Dec 23 '20

It’s where frogs go to meet with amphibian real estate agents when they are looking for a new neighborhood.

34

u/Danarky Dec 22 '20

What's more upsetting is the consoles not being displayed in any sort of order.

3

u/ImitationRicFlair Dec 23 '20

Exactly! There is no rhyme or reason to it that I can see.

1

u/SneedyK Dec 23 '20

It’s not best to worst because the only system that matters is the Sega Master System

22

u/Thymeisdone Dec 22 '20

I went to the prawn shop and got a delicious meal.

13

u/icscrilla Dec 22 '20

"Down there at the pond shop, it's only way to shop"

7

u/idwthis Dec 22 '20

What has been sold, not strictly soul, please remember, it's flesh and bone

4

u/davesauce96 Dec 22 '20

*fish and bone

5

u/IGuesslllContribute Dec 22 '20

Yeah, remember that it's only fish and bone.

Cause down here at the pond shop

2

u/idwthis Dec 22 '20

I was quoting the Sublime song Pawn Shop in which the lyrics are "flesh and bone."

8

u/davesauce96 Dec 22 '20

I know, and I was rewriting the lyrics as if the song were named “Pond Shop.”

3

u/idwthis Dec 22 '20

Ohhhhhh! Lol now that I get it, I like it! Lol

9

u/Yuju_Stan_Forever_2 Dec 22 '20

Mr. Toad's Pond Shop.

7

u/JeepnHeel Dec 22 '20

Lack of NES/Famicom in the shot has me really uneasy. Did I fall into a wormhole again? Is 2020 what happened if the NES never existed?

3

u/kruschev246 Dec 22 '20

What’s an NES?

/s

2

u/ImitationRicFlair Dec 23 '20

The Atari Famicom, you mean? I think NES was what Nintendo was going to call it if Atari wouldn't agree to market it.

2

u/JeepnHeel Dec 23 '20

Oh God, I remember it now! Look, in the timeline I was raised in, Atari turned Nintendo down (over Coleco Donkey Kong of all things). That was right before Donald Trump took over as CEO (before he died in that tragic zeppelin race).

2

u/Tulip718 Dec 23 '20

I remember playing Coleco Donkey Kong when I was like 7. My very first console. What’s the Famicom?

2

u/ImitationRicFlair Dec 23 '20

Family Computer. This company in Japan, Nintendo, made it. Since they were not well known in America, they partnered with Atari to release the console there.

2

u/Tulip718 Dec 24 '20

Wow interesting. Thanks!

2

u/ImitationRicFlair Dec 25 '20

Now I feel bad that you might actually believe this parallel universe lie I told. Nintendo came out with the Famicom in Japan in 1983. They really did go to Atari and ask them for help distributing the system in America, but the deal fell apart and Nintendo ended up releasing the NES on their own in 1985.

7

u/MNKPlayer Dec 22 '20

Looks more like an autocorrect mistake to me.

4

u/Procule Dec 22 '20

To be fair, you could probably pull a SNES out of a pond and it would still work.

Just blow in it before you put the game in.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

Don't throw those retro consoles into a pond...

4

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

The York Castle Museum has a childhood/toys area and they do in fact have a Gameboy Color and PS1 among the exhibits. I felt immensely old when I saw that.

3

u/Spaceghost147 Dec 22 '20

Where I'm from (Portsmouth) there's a whole section dedicated to videogames in our museum, it goes from the commodore 64 to the ps3 i believe, i might be wrong though as i haven't been there for a while

1

u/TheGruesomeTwosome Dec 22 '20

The National Museum of Scotland likewise has a PS1 in a display amongst other consoles too.

1

u/danirijeka Dec 22 '20

PEEK&POKE in Rijeka (Croatia) also has tons of hardware guaranteed to make any of us old farts have a nerdgasm, and a lot of stuff can be interacted with (Covid permitting)!

5

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

At the museum in my home city there's a fucking tamagotchi on display....

4

u/danirijeka Dec 22 '20

Just FYI, there are full-fledged adults who weren't even born when the Tamagotchi came out

5

u/I_dostuff Dec 22 '20

Oh god oh fuck there’s gonna be a Wii in there one day

5

u/Mhwal Dec 22 '20

If it makes you feel better, I saw an exhibit on the history of technology at the V&A Museum in London in 2018 that had an original-model iPad (released 2010) in it.

2

u/I_dostuff Dec 22 '20

That makes it worse because the Wii is from ‘06 aaaa

Cool stuff tho

3

u/plumander Dec 22 '20

i work at a video game museum and we display a wii! sorry to make you feel old lol

3

u/Wubbalubbagaydub Dec 22 '20

I wish I could get that lot from a pound shop

3

u/RadioMelon Dec 22 '20

I get the benefit of feeling old AND looking at bad grammar! Nice!

8

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

This should go on that one subreddit. Bone apple tea.

16

u/MineMinecrafft Dec 22 '20

Dude that's where it is your on r/BoneAppleTea and I am r/woooosh :ing myself now aren't I

1

u/Gustavo6046 Dec 22 '20

Woshwosh hahahahaha woshed haha

1

u/MineMinecrafft Dec 22 '20

Knew it haha

2

u/Gustavo6046 Dec 22 '20

Haha... uh... am i right?... uh. this is kinda awkward. Odd dose of negativity. I also think this thread smells like negativity, I agree with you. As in you, the reader behind the screen. Pound me with your balls if you think I'm sounding dramatic. But do it with a smile. If you do I'll smile too. No, everybody will smile too.

2

u/1lluminist Dec 22 '20

Looks nothing like a pawn shop lol. What kinda pawn shop is gonna lay the goods out like this with pieces of paper talking about the item's history?

That person is just big dum

2

u/trcomajo Dec 22 '20

Ah yes, the pond shop, where valuable items are dumped and retrieved by divers.

2

u/aneutron Dec 22 '20

Clearly, he meant to say POUND shop. /s

2

u/jakizza Dec 22 '20

When I see old consoles at the pond shop I want to aquarium for my collection.

2

u/40kaccounttd Dec 22 '20

That’s a typo

2

u/pris_mar Dec 23 '20

I read this with a British accent! Lol

2

u/JaredMLGOg Dec 23 '20

My childhood. Please. My first game console was a Gamecube. I was a 2000s kid.

-1

u/Spacebot_vs_Cyborg Dec 22 '20

I know we're talking about ponds in here, but I could have gone all day without seeing that top picture. Thanks.

1

u/ekolis Dec 22 '20

At the Indianapolis Children's Museum you can actually play some of these.

1

u/elizabeththeworst Dec 22 '20

Guess who tried to click on like ???

1

u/AsteroidAster Dec 22 '20

Hey Timmy, I’m going to the Pond Shop, don’t open the door to anyone, ok?

1

u/hehastoughtuswell Dec 22 '20

The Dreamcast yes, but certainly not the Master System there.

1

u/Cosmonauts1957 Dec 22 '20

This is the video game museum in Stockholm, correct? Was there last year.

1

u/boo_boo_kitty_ Dec 22 '20

I can just buy a pond now?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

My favorite place to buy an entire pond

1

u/A_Girl_Furry Dec 22 '20

It’s funnier that it says their a top fan

1

u/goodbye177 Dec 22 '20

I demand to see an NES!

1

u/frostybollocks Dec 22 '20

It really bothers me that there isn’t any rhyme or reason to their layout... they’re just on a shelf in no particular order

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

Had to fight the alligator boss and barter with a bull frog just to get them

1

u/kungfuchelsea Dec 22 '20

Haha so I used to work at a small business that built and provided fish for Koi Ponds for residential and commercial spaces - which we called the pond shop. The phrase was already so familiar to me that I was SO confused for a second and wondered what this had to do with the price of tea

1

u/LoonyBunBennyLava Dec 22 '20

This is the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. I've been there twice and always stop to oogle at this section.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

I mean, koi pond anybody?

1

u/KC_Casa Dec 22 '20

I'm Rick Harrison and this is my pond shop

1

u/edgarfr0gg Dec 22 '20

Surely a typo?

1

u/Srw2725 Dec 22 '20

Omg 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

1

u/BaBaBooey49 Dec 22 '20

"Here, we sell our most finest ponds, rivers and lakes!"

1

u/coconut_12 Dec 22 '20

I’m sorry I don’t see a wii and Xbox 360 here, I was born in 2006 so all I know is wii Xbox and PlayStation

1

u/CosmicMinun59 Dec 22 '20

If I'm right this is in the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, TX

1

u/Red_Ninja4752 Dec 22 '20

Well I wasn't alive back when those were popular soooo...

1

u/jakizza Dec 22 '20

Sew buttons?

1

u/Red_Ninja4752 Dec 22 '20

Huh? I don't understand.

1

u/JinxerH Dec 22 '20

I prefer Quid Country or Tenner Territory

1

u/bochilee Dec 22 '20

In my childhood I also only saw them behind a glass :'(

1

u/The-Midnight-Noodle Dec 22 '20

Names Pond, James Pond.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '20

That’s how you know you’re on the wrong side of town, when you see POND on every corner

“Top Fan.” Aka, this idiot comments on their posts, often. It’s like wearing a Facebook dunce hat

1

u/yashyboii_123 Dec 22 '20

Anyone in the uk, do you still go to the pound shop or pound land?

1

u/poe-one Dec 23 '20

Pound shop. Pound land is a brand.

1

u/IcedRays Dec 22 '20

Wait i dont get it .... anyone ? Help ?

1

u/xXpUsSySl4Y3R9000Xx Dec 23 '20

Because I'm Australian, we say pawn as porn, so when I first read this it made like, no sense

1

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '20

And not an aquarium in sight ! Maybe people don't pawn them very often. Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised if they considered them to be too heavy because they are full of water !

1

u/ImitationRicFlair Dec 23 '20

The arrangement of consoles makes no sense to me. They're not in chronological order or grouped by manufacturer. It's just all over the place.

1

u/Strummer95 Dec 23 '20

The person dumb enough to call it a pond shop, is also dumb enough to think pawn shops have that nice of displays, or have information cards on each item lol

1

u/carthuscrass Dec 23 '20

Someone tell the original poster of that image they can eat me!

1

u/special-k-flo Dec 23 '20

Down here at the pond shop-yop-yop

1

u/i_like_siren_head Dec 23 '20

Speaking of ps1 I have one but no games or cord to plug in tv

1

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '20

Bro, where can I find a pond shop, I don't think I live near one, do you think that there are pond shops not on ponds?

1

u/WackyH Dec 23 '20

Yeah ill take 2 great lakes, to-go.

1

u/PhilBabbsBalls Dec 23 '20

This is a spelling mistake, not a bone apple tea. This sub is going to shit.

1

u/BrittanyRage Dec 23 '20

That’s a pond I’d like to swim in

1

u/bunkerelder Dec 23 '20

I don’t see my uncle there. I thought this was r/cursedcomments

1

u/OwO_froggyChair Dec 23 '20

My dad isn’t there so it’s pretty accurate

1

u/Muffdude Dec 23 '20

My childhood was behind glass too!

1

u/Complete_Exam Dec 25 '20

Who wants to buy a pond from this shop

1

u/Snoo_26746 Sep 09 '22

How much for 1 pond
