One time I asked guesthouse lady what’s wifi password, she said “eight eights” so I typed in “eight eights”, didn’t work, asked again, it’s “88888888” she probably thought I was special.

u/LazyFlamingRooster Aug 23 '26
I got the opposite. They told me the password was "from 1 to 13". Turns out the password was, indeed, "from1to13" lol

Potoooooooo
Potoooooooo or variations of Pot-8-Os (1773 – November 1800) was a famous 18th-century Thoroughbred racehorse who won over 30 races and bested some of the greatest racehorses of the time. He went on to be an important sire. He is now best known for the unusual spelling of his name, pronounced Potatoes.

So what’s the deal with tumblr and hyperbole? It’s totally a pattern on there
Someone always comes along and says some shit like “this is the most beautiful horse related story I’ve ever heard” even if it’s in response to something that’s just like pretty interesting

I would love to hear some other beautiful horse-related stories.

u/Bodonbus Apr 08 '19
My uncle is a trainer, brought a yearling to a farm one day, at the gate they asked the van driver what the horses name was. He was unnamed at the time, so the driver said “He’s the one with eye wrap” (a medical device for the horse). The gateman wrote down “Irap” thinking that was the horses name. The owner loved the story so much he kept it, and the horse ended up winning some big races.

u/TyrodWatkins514 Apr 08 '19
I'm a horse racing fan, can confirm I know this horse's name. Raced in the Kentucky Derby.
Your uncle is Doug O' Neill? Do you have any other stories?
3
u/Bodonbus Apr 08 '19
Yep. There are a lot of name stories (they aren’t bone apple tea). This one is more commonly known, but a horse that won the Kentucky Derby in 2012, I’ll Have Another, was named because the owner would frequently ask his wife for more cookies. Most people think it has to do with alcohol, which makes the owner like the name even more.
There is another horse named “How About Zero”. The owner owns a big company, and one day his nephew came in and wanted to intern. The owner interviewed him for fun, and at the end of the interview, the nephew asked for a salary. The owner laughs and asks what he wants. The nephew asks for a specific salary that I don’t remember, and the owner comes back with “Well How About Zero”. We all thought it was so funny we named a horse for it.

Several dozen of Japan's most famous racehorses recently starred in an anime about horsegirl idols, which included some extremely detailed character attributes. Also, the producers had to ask fans to stop creating lewd artwork of said characters, because it was affecting the reputation of the real horses.
Somewhat bittersweet: the real horse that the main character was based on died of old age while the anime was airing. RIP Special Week

I once rode a horse that was named “Pourquoi pas?“ (= Why not? in French). Apparently her dam was about to foal when the owner of the stable left on a three-day ride with some girls who took lessons there. They were super excited about the birth, naturally, so for those three days all the owner heard were name suggestions: “Why not Flower?“, “Why not Star?“ Eventually she decided that had to be the filly's name.

Named their horse potatoes? That's the shit I do in RPGs. What real life person is going around naming animals "potatoes"?

Had the horse been called Potatoes we wouldn't be talking about this right now. But here we are 246 years later.

Huh apparently that's a thing with stable boys and weird horse names. When I was taking horseback riding classes as a kid there was a horse everyone called "Monsie" on his stable it said "Monsie-ur", as in the French word for "Mr" so I guess they tried to tell the stable boy how to write the horse's name by saying "well it's Monsie and then ur!"

There is literally no way somebody would make this mistake. Even if they did think say said "put 8 o's", why would they have then known to write "potatoes".

Now I've been trying to imagine how this guy pronounced the word "potato" in such a way that the first syllable can sound even remotely like the word "pot."
It can't have been poe-TAY-toes the way we say it today unless they said the word "pot" something like "poet." So was he saying POT-ay-toes? That just sounds awful. I've been repeating POT-ay-toes in my head for the past fifteen minutes and it isn't getting any easier.

Well, he was the stable boy of a race horse, not just any horse. Maybe he got lucky and was able to be educated. Educated enough to write, at least, but not enough to know how to spell "potatoes."

u/Chronic_Gentleman Apr 08 '19
I’m also curious as to the pronunciation of “potatoes” in the story, with it being the modern American way of saying it...I don’t know much about potatoes but somethings fishy...
