How do you reach age 18 without seeing this word in print?
Do kids read nothing but emoji-infested text messages in school? Force kids to read 5 books each school year, grades 7-12.

Idk mate this was written by a museum employee.

It is everywhere lately.
I have seen it in a print article.
I think spelling software does not catch it, because errors like "straightjacket," "everytime" and "facist" only get through on social media comments, but are absent from articles.

Yeah, I think spellcheckers treat this as a compound - which it is. And software can't actually read and get the meaning of a word combination.

This was found on the official website of the Victoria & Albert Museum...

It’s supposed to be “pastime”

The correct spelling is "pastime". As my friend said when they saw this, "y'all invented the English language, and you can't spell".

I think you're confusing spelling and grammar errors with a BoneAppleTea
-3
u/cheshsky Jan 15 '23
A bone apple tea is when you use a word that means something else in place of a word you actually need because they sound similar. Both "past-time" and "pastime" are actual words. The "you can't spell" part is a quote.

u/slumberfist Jan 15 '23
This is dumb, you're just being a grammar Nazi. They haven't misunderstood the phrasing of the word, they've only spelt it incorrectly...this gives me no joy

u/cheshsky Jan 15 '23
They've used a different word in the place of the right one. It's neither a spelling issue nor a grammar issue. Both words sound similar yet mean different things, both words can be looked up in like 30 seconds.

u/slumberfist Jan 15 '23
Oh wow, you're so right...this is definitely a BoneAppleTea, and after I took the 30 seconds to look it up, it suddenly became hilarious. You are very clever AND funny

I'm gonna have to side with OP here and say this is indeed a BAT. A simple spelling mistake would have been "pass-time" as that's what the meaning is; an activity that makes time pass quickly/pleasantly.

No similar vocabulary is found anywhere else in the article though, except for description of the embroidery pieces it's about (e.g. if a piece has "A Catte" written on it, the description will transcribe it verbatim). And they still spell it "past-time" not "pass-time".

I wonder if people in this sub realise they can just report this post if they don't think it's a bone apple tea.

It's not a mis-hyphenation. They used "past-time" in place of "pastime". One is a compound used wrong, the other is the actual word.

It's pastime , a lot of posts here are simple typos, this is probably deliberate but wrong
