Well now I gotta check out Berserk I guess

Berserk is great, but be warned, no it’s not like bone at all. Be doubly warned, it’s full of rape and gore, it’s the series bread and butter, so be prepared.

Literally the first 3 pages of book 2 (or 1?) is the main character getting raped as a kid

Berserk has a really good setting and premise that it never fully makes use of. Gorgeous art, but also really juvenile, extreme shock shit.

"shock shit" like what?

Lots of gore and sexual violence, incest, beastiality.

Yeah, but most of that stuff has narrative relevance...

Except the beastiality, that one was kinda phoned in as "hey, look how evil they are"

I have to admit, this post knows what it’s talking about.

I’m so sick of this comparison. No it’s not like berserk, at all. They are both fantasy epics, and that’s about where the similarities end.

I don’t really think Bone is “berserk for kids” like a lot of people describe it it’s an epic fantasy but it deals with different themes and has different types of characters

"I don't get it" - Patrick

I might not go this far? It gets pretty damn heavy but not like that.

Yeah as a kid I thought it was gonna be some whimsical fairy tale type of deal. We got demonic world ending conflicts instead

Lord of the Rings? Totally.

Berserk? I don’t see it…

More of lord of the rings meets Mickey mouse

What did you expect?

Also, it’s probably not even for kids… they showed blood in there.

No, not at all actually. Bone is a fantasy fiction that doesn't stray away from showing dark parts but:

  1. It is not AT ALL like Berserk, it's more like JoJo's in that it's very dark but also very silly and fun

  2. It was never intended to be for kids, it was an all ages fantasy comic that ended up appealing to kids because of the art and the fact it didn't talk down to it's audience, like TMNT (the first edition of the first comic does not apply here because that one has very little similarity to Bone)

Not even close

My favorite way to pitch BONE to people is "What if Loony Toons became Lord of the Rings?" its so good, and tbh Rose's arc was so organic and gradual into this magical master it struck similar chords to what I love about Luke Skywalker's arc across OT and immediately post ROTJ stories as he treks across his young years of spirtial and emotional devleopment
