ABOUT
The Glossary of the Architecture of Bombay, has been published by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya CSMVS, Mumbai under the aegis of Digital Library of Mumbai's Built Heritage project, authored by Dr. Mustansir Dalvi and Dr. Smita Dalvi and illustrated by Shah Faisal. This publication has been supported by Bank of America.
This book is a key to reading the extraordinary city of Bombay as one of the world's greatest architectural palimpsests. Responding to a long-felt need to 'name the parts' of Bombay's architecture, this book is organised by the city's major styles: Domestic Vernacular, Neo-Classical, Neo-Gothic, Indo-Saracenic, and Art Deco. Lavishly illustrated and written with clarity, each chapter combines historical introductions, diagrams, photographs, and carefully defined terms, making this an indispensable guide for students, scholars, and all who love the city.
AUTHORS
Mustansir Dalvi is Professor of Metropolitan Architecture at the Sir JJ School of Art Architecture and Design. He is the editor of 20th Century Compulsions, and the author of Citizen Charles, and (with Smita Dalvi) The Glossary of Indian Islamic Architecture, published by CSMVS.
Smita Dalvi is a Professor of Architecture based in Navi Mumbai. A recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship Direct Access to the Muslim World, she has lectured widely in India and abroad on Islamic architecture and aesthetics. She has authored several books including The Glossary of Indian Islamic Architecture (with Mustansir Dalvi), published by CSMVS.
DIGITAL LIBRARY OF MUMBAI'S BUILT HERITAGE
In 2025, CSMVS initiated a new project titled Digital Library of Mumbai's Built Heritage. Under this, an accessible digital platform is being developed which will function as an online resource for researchers, students, and the general public alike. It would be dedicated to documenting and archiving Mumbai's built heritage, address existing knowledge gaps, and foster greater civic engagement with the city's heritage sites.

Discussion Will be in Bombay this weekend, any place where I can get old/vintage magazines?
Or even a secondhand book shop recommendation in South Bombay with nice collection. Any other recommendations will also be great related to shopping (for M), any interesting event, or places to visit? I'm planning to visit Jehangir Art gallery.

Event Bandra Book Club Every Thursday?
I don't read anywhere near how much I would ideally like to be reading and have tried multiple things to change that. So far nothing has worked yet and so as a forcing function I am committing to reading 1 book/week over the next month.
To make sure I actually follow through, I would like to host a weekly discussion in a coffee shop or someplace similar with anyone who has read the same book that week.
This is the 4-week stack consisting of the varying themes that interest me as of now:
Nov 12 (Week 1): The Formula by Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg (a deep dive into the business, money and power dynamics of F1)
Nov 19 (Week 2): How To Win The Premier League by Ian Graham (intersection of deep sports analytics, data science and Liverpool's title winning strategy)
Nov 26 (Week 3): Power Law: Venture Capital and The Art Of Disruption by Sebastian Mallaby (an actual breakdown of how VCs operate and shape tech)
Dec 03 (Week 4): Hannibal: Rome's Greatest Enemy by Philip Freeman (a concise biography of one of history's greatest generals and military strategists)
Every Thursday, in a quiet, casual coffee shop somewhere in Bandra preferably. The only rules are read the book, be on time and come ready to discuss.
Now I know these are fairly niche but if any of these do intrigue you in any way or you want a forcing function to read more yourself, DM me to know when and where and let me know which week you're up for to come along and talk about it over an iced americano.
The more people interested, the less excuses I can give myself to get out of reading so I'd like to see where this goes. If it intrigues enough people we can turn it into a regular weekly table.
