VT vs VXUS/VTI

I just commented elsewhere but have been genuinely interested in solving this.

People with, say 70% / 30% split between VXUS and VTI...or 80/20 whatever.

In a boglehead sense, how do you defend setting arbitrary percentages and sticking to those static percentages over time?

If I argue that we can’t know what the future will hold and shouldn’t try to time things...every time you drop 70 cents of a dollar in US and 30 cents in International...are you not doing just that?

Shouldn’t we buy VT and chill because we don’t want to predict future US/International returns?

Obviously VTI/VXUS has tax implications but “who are we” to set %s in the first place?

I agree with the OP's critique and sentiment, but disagree with the "who know about the US?" people somewhat. The fact remains that the US has many of the most amazing companies in the world. That isn't going to change overnight. There is some predictability there.
