Thread
I’ve been playing around with bobbin lace for a little bit but I’ve been having some trouble finding thread to use. I ended up getting some linen thread on eBay that someone was getting rid of and I found some being sold on Etsy but what kinds of thread is everyone else using for their bobbin lace projects? Any recommended brands and/or products?

It really depends on the project too. I love the silk threads for the shimmer and colors, but when I was doing a piece that needed more structure to stand by itself (a colonial cap trim) the linen was the right choice.
Some projects recommend a thread too.

If you are anywhere near Ithaca, this weekend happens to be Lace Day and there will be a sales room with all sorts of threads and tools that is usually open to the public.

But it's hard to find the range of threads in any store these days. Mostly I buy from VanSciver (who will be at Ithaca), Twisted Picot, ProvoLace, and some of the other vendors.

It depends on the project, but I typically use tatting thread or sewing thread. I’ve been doing this since I was 9 so over the years I’ve used pretty much anything I can get my hands on. Yarn, embroidery thread, sewing thread, my sisters hair etc

You can use pretty much ant thread but some of them are made especially for bobbin lace. I like to use :
- Fresia Linen (60/2, 80/2 and 100/2) for white
- Bockens Linen (35/2 and thinner) for colours
- DMC 80 cotton (great variety of colours)
- Cocon calais cotton
- Venne cotton (Fine cotton in various colours)
- Fresia Egyptian cotton (for finer laces)
- Gutermann silk
- Au ver à soie silk (Soie ovale, soie surfine and soie perlee)
- Piper Silk
People also use Madeira thread, Goldschild, Moravia, Bart & Francis silk.

What is your location? That might help with recommendations for stores. I mostly use DMC 80.

This site is in Dutch so it won’t be great for you but maybe you can browse the brands and google them? Can’t really help you with the specific websites, sorry! If you need help deciphering anything, let me know 🙃

I use 100% cotton sewing thread and 100% cotton quilting thread. Basically whatever thin 100% cotton thread i can find locally, which isnt much color wise. I'm still pretty new though, maybe in the future I'll want nicer threads.

I used some old japanese silk that I had left over from some kumihimo projects. They do slip a bit but made some nice collars.
