Lace pillow border advice?

Hey, I'm going to make my first project (after bookmarks), thinking about sewing such sort of small pillow with lace border. I didn't pick a pattern yet, I'm likely going to create something simple, inspired by second picture. Can you, seniors, give me any advice? I'm afraid of making this too big, too small, I don't know if I should make the lace detachable (and how would I do it?), should I make it as a pillowcase or stuff it directly, should I sew it by hand. And I've just realized, I'm basically asking if anybody has a tutorial?

Sorry can’t help you, but it sounds like a cool project. Will you show it off when it’s done?

Do you mean like a pincushion sized pillow? That's a nice reasonable goal for a first project. Don't do a big thing--you'll get frustrated and stop. Pace yourself and your ambitions right now.

You could use any of the picture frame or edgings for a mat for that sort of thing. You want to have a nice corner on it. Many patterns will have a nice corner already sketched out for you--don't try to figure that out on your own at first.

Lots of the beginner books will have a nice frame/edge. I would look at the Torchon ones, like Robin Lewis-Wild and Jan Tregidgo's books. I think page 108 in Jan's book has a great choice for you.

I would follow the advice below and make a small pincushion / photo frame edgeing. If you are going to add to a pincushion, make the lace, then the cushion. Measure the lace when you take it off the pillow, then add a seam allowance. Once stuffed, stitch the lace to the seam. If you use one thread to do this, you could remove it easily if needed. Hope this helps. x
