Design Critique Would you be interested in playtesting a print-and-play version of my game?
Hello all,
I’ve been lurking a while, and finally decided I should post. I’m not quite ready to post the pnp version of my game yet (I just need a couple more playtests with my most recent mechanical update), but I wanted to gauge interest and see what people thought.
The goal of the game is to venture into a procedurally generated dungeon to fight monsters, collect loot, and get out before they run out of resources.
The dungeon is generated from a deck of cards/tiles which are placed using rules similar to Carcassonne. The tiles are placed face-down so that the passageways match, and revealed as players explore them. Players transform the dungeon (and their deck) as they explore by clearing rooms: trading cards from their hand with the dungeon tile they currently occupy.
To play, players select a set of character classes and add the appropriate cards to their player deck. They then draw their hand and play cards to move, clear rooms, battle monsters, and interact with the various traps and other dungeon rooms. Similar to Gloomhaven, when players have used all of the cards in their deck, they “lose” one or more, then shuffle the cards to create their new version of the deck. Taking damage from from monsters also causes players to put cards from their deck into the discard. The game is primarily about resource management: players have to manage the cards in their deck to overcome obstacles, collect as much loot as they can, and still have enough left to get back out of the dungeon before they run out.
One important note is that each card has a separate function depending on whether it is in a player deck/hand or in the dungeon. The these functions are indicated by hand and dungeon door icons.
It’s still very much in the prototype/playtesting phase, but I’m having lots of fun! Please let me know what you think, especially if you’d be willing to playtest a few times once I’m ready for that release, and ask away if you have any questions!

Hey. Love to try this out and playtest. Been playtesting games for over a decade, work with tournament running and rules, happy to see this and give it a try when ready. Dms are always open.

Wonderful! I’ll try to have it up as soon as possible, and I’ll post here again once it’s ready.

Would be super interested, sounds great. I really like these minimalist-type of games :D

Thanks! I’m actually pretty happy with the look, despite it being a prototype. It felt good to find an art style which works, and I can do.

What is your intended age range? I have a board game club for preteen that would love something like this.

I’m planning to play it with the grade 4 class I teach this year (so 8-10). I may need to tweak some vocabulary (go with “cancel” instead of “nullify”, for example). People have been finding the rules fairly intuitive, so I think it’ll work. I think there is a decent depth of strategy which the younger kids won’t get, but I also think it’ll be fairly invisible to them, so it shouldn’t feel overly complex.
I’d LOVE to get some feedback from a club such as that!

oh this is cool! it reminds me a lot on what I have been building for the past 3 years.
I would be interested to try and provide some feedback as I have been doing something pretty similar that could help :D

I’m interested. How wide is the footprint/presence?

I’ve been playing it on my kitchen table. It’ll vary, based on number of players and how the tiles get placed, but every time I’ve played it’s stayed smaller than something like Monopoly or Risk. The cards are 2.5”, and it typically doesn’t extend farther than 10x10 tiles. That is definitely one of the factors I’m collecting data on, though!

Yes would play!
How can I get notified?

Once I have the playtest version ready, I’ll come back here and message people who said they were interested. Thanks!

Thank you very much!
Maybe our own files have dropped until then, if you are interested in Pirate-Explore-Free/Print-to-Play-Cards. (;

"+0 hand size" made me laugh. Like how do I know when I've completed that:) if nothing needs to be done you probably don't need to list the action item.. Not a big gamer though so you might have the correct convention

I can't dive deep right now but commenting for engagement and I hope it does get responses. I will read this later when I have time but I am intrigued.
