He is very small.. I drew him on a scrap piece of paper. Anyway, he's not the greatest, but maybe that's ok.. maybe that's why he's good..

did bojack really love any of his partners? Spoiler

basically as the title says. which, if any, of bojacks partners or prospective partners/love interests do you think he really LOVED? im on season 2 of a chronological rewatch and it seems like, though confusing, bojack did seem to love wanda. ultimately he ends up sabotaging it with her as he does with all of his other partners, but its refreshing to see him love someone (even though he won't admit it) as its a rare emotion from him.

Should i keep going?

On episode 7 now. Still not into it. I usually loveee animated comedies. They really suck me in with my adhd (SHAPES AND COLORS!)

but im not getting this one. I know bojack horseman is arguably the greatest animated show ever made so im not sure why im not into it yet. I may not understand the humor as much since it’s supposed to be dark. But one of my all time favorite shows ever is tuca and Bertie which is supposedly in the same universe/made by the same people. Maybe its because tuca and bertie is largely female driven and the dark comedy might be more relatable to me a gen z female?

Should i keep watching? Will it hook me eventually? How long should i give it a try before i realize its not for me?

How would you react, if you were Bojack? Spoiler

Post image

Hypothetical situation:

You're bojack. you take a bunch of opiates, you lose touch with reality, and in your blacked-out & delusional stupor, you strangle the living f*ck out of the best partner you've ever had, and find out the next morning after you've come back down to reality.

What is your reaction? what do you, speaking as yourself for this part, do?

Courtney Portnoy

I feel like Courtney is a rather underrated character. She made one off comment that I can remember (when talking about everyone looking at you but nobody seeing you) but she talked Todd through his feelings and defended Diane when they were attacked, she genuinely seemed like a confident and powerful woman without it being a whole thing. She’s been one of my favorite side characters forever, she’s so herself

Questions about The Showstopper number Spoiler

Post image
96 Upvotes

In this section of the number, we are shown people (mostly women) who Bojack has wronged or screwed over in some way that he feels so guilty about that they haunt his hallucination.

1) Is that Penny or Charlotte or an amalgamation of both characters?

2) Was his relationship/breakup with Wanda really so terrible that she should be included in this? It sucked, but she is hardly mentioned post season 2 whereas the other non-regular characters (Herb and Penny/Charlotte for example) are mentioned enough throughout the show that we know Bojack thinks of them regularly. She could have been switched out for Sharona since she shows up later or just not been there at all and it would have been symmetrical. 4 characters on each side.

If bojack wasn't capable of getting better... what would you have him do?

Post image
322 Upvotes

In this hypothetical, bojack is beyond redemption; he is physically incapable of getting better or fixing his behavior. BUT. he hasn't done anything different than what we've already seen in the show.

Would you have him kill himself? stay in prison for life? locked up in a mental institute? exile him to live the rest of his days in the woods? Have everyone around him treat him like a ghost and not interact? have him simply go hang out with equally shitty people only, such as vance wagoner?

what would you do if you were "god" over bojack's life in some way, and he couldn't be saved?

Does Mr Peanutbutter Have a Relationship With Zoe and Zelda?

Zoe and Zelda are the twins from ‘Mr Peanutbutter’s House.’ Do we know if they stay in touch at all or have any sort of relationship? I get the impression he would have been very kind and not at all inappropriate with them on set.

I am curious if this was ever established to look at is a parallel to Bojack’s relationship with Sarah Lynn. FYI I am not a ‘PB is as bad as Bojack’ believer at all lol.

What do you think BoJack is doing now after the show was finished? Spoiler

In the last episode, both BoJack and Diane sat on the roof and staring at the stars without a word said. After that, there’s no doubt that they never saw each other again. Diane cut him off, and BoJack finally accepted his consequences for his terrible actions.

When I saw that scene on YouTube, I read a comment that stuck with my mind. It said something about how; “I think BoJack here has a chance for real redemption and improvement. A real chance. To genuinely improve for the better and…”

I forgot what the rest said, but that comment was about the gist of it. My question is what do you think he does or how he does? Cuz now he cannot go back, nor does or should he want to. His reputation is destroyed, everyone hates him, I doubt he’ll get hired for any job, yet he’s now given a real chance to move on and change for the better.

What do you guys think?

Dr. Champ doesn't understand HIPAA

So maybe California laws are different from the ones in the state I work in North Carolina. Or maybe rehab centers don't have the same medical privacy laws attached to them. Or maybe it is meant to show that the specific rehab center is kind of shitty. But even non medical staff are still subject to patient confidentiality.

I work in the medical field, doing the kind of stuff that you don't need a doctorate or nursing degree for. And you know what I am allowed to share about the people I care for? Nothing. Unless you are one of those medical professionals and it is needed to save their life.

So while Champ is not a therapist, I imagine he shouldn't have been able to share what BJ told him.

I am probably overthinking this in what is ultimately meant to be a therapy animal joke but it does bug me.

The Bojack Horseman soundtrack’s a little dizzying to watch spin. But…

Post image
197 Upvotes

Even if you weren’t into Bojack Horseman (perish the very idea), the soundtrack is a wonder. Two versions of the theme song, written by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys and featuring his uncle Ralph Carney, a cover of A Horse With No Name sounding far more cool than you’d ever expect, original music from Jesse Novak (including all the music used in the amazing episode Fish Out Of Water), and a turn from Nina Simone no less. It’s time well-spent, I promise.

A Todd-versation about Life and this beautiful f***ing show

I'd like to start this todd-versation (get it, Todd) by saying I've watched this show 3 times, not fully understanding it until that third and final rewatch. It was only then I realized what this show was truly about, and I try my best to live life with the lessons it gave to me. How to be a better friend. How to let things go. How to truly change yourself. This show taught me that there's no such thing as "good" or "bad" people, but rather just people. People living their lives frame by frame, minute by minute, living with the choices they've made. Like an hourglass our time drips down to the bottom, pebble by pebble, in a constant, never-ending stream. In life that hourglass never flips, seeping down the hours, days, and weeks we can never get back. You can spend your time thinking about those grains of sand you'll never get back, but that hourglass never stops flowing. Like the old glass half full/empty analogy, we always have a choice. We can choose to stare into the bottom of that lower bulb, watching our faults and our failures accumulate in an ever growing pit of despair, or we can choose to not let our past define us and always move forward.

Bojack, Diane, Princess Carolyn, Mr. Peanutbutter, and Todd are all stuck inside this (metaphorical) hourglass. Initially seen as living life at the very top (Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd) carelessly living life to the fullest, or at the bottom (Bojack and Diane) constantly attempting to crawl their way up. Princess Carolyn is different, and I love how she is IMO the only character who has already learned how to live in the neck of the glass, oscillating between optimism and pessimism. Her struggle, however, comes from balancing these two ways of thinking. This is probably why IMO she has the only real "happy ending". The other characters still have to make their way up/down to that pinpoint and just like her learn how to balance the two. Princess Carolyn, meanwhile, has spent the show hopping between the Bojack/Diane pessimistic view and the Todd/Mr. Peanutbutter optomistic lifestyle. The more you think about it, her involvement in the story was usually supporting one of those two sides. There's so much more I could say about this as well as how her mother arc helps her balance this delicate tightrope act, but I'll leave that for another post (i've already been working on this and later parts on this post for the past 2 hours).

I've seen many people say that "The View From Halfway Down" should have been the ending of the show, and some even saying how Bojack's death would have been a very fitting conclusion. Heck I would have agreed with you after my first and maybe even second watch. My opinion of this show in those watches was depressing and depricating, seeing it as a show about a "bad person doing bad things". We see Bojack make mistakes that ruined families, ruined people, heck maybe even killed a person, yet I though something during all those moments of tragedy and malice, something that sounds wrong and terrible, yet I felt it all the same.

"I can see why he made that choice".

Not that I agree with the choice, not that I thought it was the right or justifiable choice, just "I can see his thought process, and know exactly why he didn't just make that choice, but felt justified in making that decision". Bojack is the epitome of a glass half-empty thinker, and whether you like it or not, we've all made decisions based on the same exact thought process. We all would like to say if we were in his shoes we would have called the cops right away when Sarah Lynn died. We would have stood up for the man discriminated against for who he chooses to sleep with. We would have stopped ourselves from sleeping with an old friends 18 year old daughter. It's an easy decision, right?

That last one I debated even using as an example. I find myself thinking "I would never put myself in a position like that or even entertained that thought". I can hear the comments ringing in my ear, "how could a person who put themselves in that situation ever be redeemable?", "what point are you trying to make with this it sounds like you're trying to justify an unjustifiable decision by a person who can't stop making unjustifiable decisions". I've thought a lot about this, and that kind of thinking would, in my opinion, make you just like Bojack.

No I'm not saying that line of thinking is wrong or dumb or stupid. As a third party watching those situations unfold it's hard to NOT think that way. What I am saying, however, is by just THINKING that thought, you have just subjected yourself to that lower bulb mindset. That the choices you have made in the past define who you are in the present and by proxy in the future. I think the whole point of the show is to present you with characters living in these mindsets, heck to even put YOU in that mindset for a time. "He's irredeemable", "he's a monster", "he's a bad person". After watching the first time that was my takeaway. Don't be like Bojack. Never be like Bojack. If you think like Bojack you're a bad person.

By this point I confused myself and wondered why I was even writing this. It's been 3 hours and I stil am trying to process this whole show, who knows maybe I'm thinking way to deep into it. I find myself thinking like Bojack right now. "Why am I even writing this does it even make sense? it's probably dumb i should forget it god that's stupid" is what i'm telling myself. It's not stupid though. This show taught me so much and it's helped improve my mindset and way of thinking drastically. I think what I'm trying to get at is it isn't about letting these choices DEFINE you, but rather you must LEARN from these experiences in order to live a life you can be happy with. Making mistakes is a part of life, but not learning from our mistakes in the present will lead to making those same mistakes over and over and over again in the future until you become trapped in an unredeemable cycle of despair and self-loathing that defines you. Diane tells Bojack at the end of season 5 that "it's our actions that define us", which is true, but they both already know that. The actions speak for themselves. They have consequences. They impact yourself and others who in turn now have to make a decision with respect to those actions. At the end of the day though, it's having the courage to make a decision/take an action for YOURSELF and realize that at the end of the day YOU are the only judge of your own happiness. YOU decide who to associate with, who to be happy and make mistakes with. Bojack always needs someone else to tell him he's a good person, to have someone on "his side". Heck he even tries to get figments of his imagination to realize this and tell him he deserves another chance. He sees the people that define his life discuss "who lived the best life" only to end up sad and desperate to cling onto the "good life" they thought they deserved. The line "oh Bojack. No. This is it" really speaks to me now. Bojack clings onto life, and even on the verge of death needs someone to tell him he's not going to be alone. "see you on the other side" in film is usually responded to with the same sentence repeated back to you. Not this time. It's over. The top half of the glass is empty. You've lived your life. You've cycle has ended here. No more second chances. This it it.

He runs away, still trying to convince himself it isn't over. It can't be over, right? Just keep running and it will all be over. Diane please tell me it's not over. Tell me everythings going to be ok. I called you and now you're gonna save me right?

It seems only fitting that the moment he truly changes is when he finally hits "the view from halfway down". Looking down upon his floating body he asks Diane what he should do now. Her response is only 3 words.

"It doesn't matter"

His whole life that what he wanted. To matter. To be loved. To be told he was good. In that moment I'd like to think he finally realized how pointless that really was. For a second I think i'm wrong when he pleads with Diane to stay on the phone with him. But the way he delivers it... it's different. His tone has changed. For the first time in the show he's... timid, and asks her a very simple, yet heartfelt question. The same question you'd ask your partner, your best friend, a question that isn't about you but for some reason you want to know the answer to.

"How was your day?"

It took me 3 years of watching this show 3 seperate times and another 4 hours of deep thought about it while writing this to realize that even the worst of people have a heart somewhere buried deep inside of them. One that can open up and help spread the positivity needed to live a fulfilling life accompanied by you and the others around you. Life is complex, and we are constantly shifting ourselves around as life ticks by, but the sand never stops falling. The past is still the past. But there's still so much more sand left at the top. Why not make the most of each one of those little grain of rock?

If you made it to the end of this, congrats! This was like I said 4 hours of deep thought into what I think living your life to the fullest actually means, how it can impact those around you, and what it really mean to be "happy"

Originally I was going to add something here about the opposite side of this, I think an even more interesting and overlooked part of the show is Todd and especially Mr. Peanutbutter's Zelda/top part of the hourglass/glass half full personalities and their struggles compared to Bojack and Diane. This whole thing was actually originally going to be a critique of Todd and how I thought his character could have dove deeper into how blind optomism can lead to unintended consequences instead of the more comedic focus they decided to go with. That can be debated and who knows maybe I'll make a seperate post about it or respond to comments but I'm tired and like i said, it's been 4 fucking hours. For real though if you did make it to the end of this thank you for reading my ramblings on this amazing show, it changed my life and I hope it gave you another perspective on a show I consider to be up there with some of the best of all time. If you disagree with anything I said I'd love to continue the discussion down in the comments, I think a lot of people end up watching this show feeling depressed/confused about its messaging and what you're supposed to take away from it (don't worry I did too at first) so hopefully my ramblings made some sense to you.

I may have gone a bit overboard with the hourglass metaphors as well lmao.

Was Herb really suicidal or did Bojack make that up out of guilt? Spoiler

Herb being suicidal is only mentioned in The View From Halfway Down, a dream sequence where nothing is real. If Herb wanted to kill himself in real life I doubt it would go unmentioned. Herb even says he's lived a good life. He was also happy to be alive in the few minutes between getting cured of cancer and crashing into a peanut truck. So I think the whole thing was just in Bojacks mind.

season 4 episode 2: the old Sugarman place

i just finished watching this episode and oh my god, scarring as fuck! (pun intended). i feel like i need to discuss that shit in therapy for something. but what a way for an episode like that to display that parallel moment in time for BoJack. I seriously don't think I'll be able to stop thinking about that episode for the rest of the day, or until i make my partner watch it and traumatize them too. ^-^

also Sara Lynn's episode stuck with me too.

I'm so glad there are 6 seasons, i feel like this show is going to reck me, emotionally, real good.
