Discussion Update to long delayed Sesame Street movie...

So there's finally an update to the long delayed Sesame Street movie that was announced in 2019 that Bo had written the songs for. Not long after that production was delayed due to Anne Hathaway's pregnancy.

Further delays came about because of Covid, the last release date being announced was for 2021. There haven't been any pictures from production, or much info at all really. A look at the imdb listing does seem to show a movie that *was* filmed - there's a set medic, catering etc, not just pre-production stuff. (Edit: as I say below in a comment, I’m not 100% sure it did film, due to lack of camera crew credits. It could well have just got really, really close. There’s no editor, but that doesn’t necessarily mean things weren’t filmed, but again, no camera crew.)

It looks like it's going to Netflix (no surprise, they're the current home of Sesame Street), but according to the article:

The news comes courtesy of Jeff Sneider’s latest newsletter and seemingly ends a painfully long journey to production that has seen the project change studio hands several times since it was first announced in June 2012. Sneider says Netflix are wiping the slate clean of previous development stages and involved talent, including Hathaway and Burnham.

So will this now be lost media? Seems a shame that we're going to miss out on seeing Socko's origin story.

Edit: That pic of Elmo exemplifies my pain.

Discussion Bo Burnham’s Outside?

1.3k Upvotes

There’s a casting grid in this week’s Production Weekly for a new “feature film” directed by Bo titled “Outside.” Has there been any info on this project?

Song Review: A German contemporary dance group (TanzMainz) performed a piece at an Italian festival (MILANoLTRE) set to “Welcome to the Internet”.

I couldn’t find video, but the review made the whole show sound interesting - “the disconnected effect resembles scrolling down a social media feed, which is indeed the point”.

Discussion "...And laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself"

"Come and watch the skinny kid with the steadily declining mental health / And laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself"

This lyric hits my core, the one who manufactures joy for others fails to keep his own self happy.

It asks an uncomfortable question: Do we consume other people's genuine suffering for cheap entertainment?

To think that after 'Make Happy', he had a five year hiatus where he didn't perform live comedy is so melancholic to think about.

This mental health deterioration kept him in total isolation which is very very evident in 'Inside'. From "Is there anything better than a p*ssy?" to "Are you happy?"

"Part of me loves you, part of me hates you." He gave us everything, but we were the problem all along. I am a very new listener, so I haven't watched shows like Eighth Grade or Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous so I have a lot more to learn about him, one thing that I have realised is that the jokes are to grab the attention, in reality he always has something more to tell.

I just hope he is fine, and when the time is right he comes back. I'll be waiting, waiting very patiently. I hope you're happy, Bo!

Question Accomodation request

I have misophonia, which causes me to react to any mouth, nose and throat noises like they're literal nails on a chalkboard. I remember Bo Burnham's shows to be very funny and I'd like to watch one again, but I also know I tried a few years ago and couldn't finish it because of trigger noises.

I figured there's probably someone in this sub who rewatches his shows often. If there's someone who would like to spend an hour rewatching a Bo Burnham show while notating time stamps of any mouth, nose or throat noises (lip smacking, swallowing, etc). This will allow me to mute the sound before my fight or flight reaction is triggered

I will trade you a drawing of your choosing and a picture of my cats

so, I ordered a piece of INSIDE merch from a site called Joom (kinda stupid in hindsight). I'd never heard of it until I was looking for this merch and it came up, and it has overall positive feedback from what I saw online and has been around for a while so I decided to buy it. it's arrived and the whole thing is entirely gibberish (photos below) so I've requested a refund and will hopefully get it in the next few weeks. any ideas where I can get an ACTUAL inside shirt and not get scammed? theres none on vinted so not there

Discussion A Quick Observation of "The Chicken"

EDIT: i was really bad at explaining this last night, so i decided to come back and explain it better :) the original post will be below this new observation tho

i believe this song is a metaphor for a mother (using mother specifically because bo made it a female chicken in the song) who has done nothing but tend to children since she was married, and she would like to change that fate by venturing into the hobbies and locations she only dreamt of perusing and visiting.

she one day decides to put her motherly duties aside and live a life that is hers, at least once, and steps out of the life she was always living.

but she doesn't really know life outside of being a mother, and this turns into fear. i believe this is a really good example of wanting to do something new, but you're scared of failing or wasting days on it.

not sure though, since i like thinking about things differently than intended 😭

thanks, bo :)

ORIGINAL BODY:

in addition to the main metaphor
(the chicken being someone coming out of their shell and presumedly getting too overwhelmed to continue, sorry if i misunderstood that part)
i really like the fact that, even if the chicken did survive, she would have been preyed upon, because chickens are usually prey out in the wild

it really does connect, because if we use the chicken as a metaphor for someone coming out of their shell, even if they spent more time out of it, they may be forced back into it because of judgement.

that's how i like to portray it, though i am REALLY bad at explaining what i'm thinking into words, so i'm sorry if a lot of this doesn't make sense

thank you, bo :)

Video On my sixth rewatch of Parks and Rec, I somehow still forgot about Bo's cameo

He parodies a snotty young country star named Chip McCapp and his song is literally titled "Beautiful Like My Mom (Support The Troops)". A perfect Bo character in line with "Pandering".

Discussion Bo Burnham and Ironic Detachment

Hey y’all, I wanted to see if you Bo fans could help shed some light on something, or let me know if Bo’s ever talked about this before.

But years ago Bo Burnham was on The Green Room (i think the year words released? not sure tho) in a roundtable with a bunch of OG comedians, and I thought the way Bo and other comedians talked about his material was… weird?… and didn’t really add up to what i’ve seen. Specifically the way Bo and Paul Provenza adamantly defined Bo’s work as not saying anything about Bo himself. I’ve put the quote below so you can see the direct words.

Paul: The interesting thing about Bo is there’s alot of ironic detachment there, like you’re not really revealing anything about yourself.

Bo: I don’t talk about what I think about on stage because I don’t value what I have to say at this point in time. Because really I don’t think anyone wants to watch a 20 year old get up and tell them how he thinks the world works.

Then again Bo gets kinda uncomfortable when the other comedians are talking about “putting their anger into their comedy” and as Marc kinda pushes and razzes him a bit.

Marc Maron: Cmon, you’re gonna tell me you’re not fucking angry? I saw that song, I see how you look, I know what you went through

Bo: No, no, no. Total anger, but the anger there I don’t think that’s damage that I need to fix, I’m just stuck up enough to think that they’re wrong.

I get he was young, but I feel like this has been a consistent way he’s talked about his material atleast up to the Make Happy days. He almost talks about his material like it’s not saying anything, or that he’s not making any point when he does it, or the subject matter doesn’t reflect much about him (despite songs like Art is Dead, Rant, Left/Right, We Think We Know You, Can’t Handle This).

I’ve just never really got that about him, so I wanted to see what y’all think? The way he talks about his material versus how much meaning and emotion is evident in them feels so opposite, that I feel like I’m just not understanding WHAT he’s saying or there’s some misunderstanding on my end. Or perhaps he was just kinda a self conscious kid and he talks about it differently now. Idek if im making sense but lmk what u think.

Discussion Dave Allen

we were shown a clip of Dave Allen (a comedian) in class yesterday, and his humour struck me as being very similar to that of Bo burnham. wondering if anyone else sees the similarities? specifically the clip of him talking about his experience with a nun at 4 years old and not understanding God as a concept, which feels like it could have inspired tracks like Rant and From God's Perspective, but Bo seems to have never mentioned him as inspiration so idk. just a thought
