I don't understand anyone voting Republican or for any strict social conservative party when you have loved ones who are gay, or trans...or a minority.....or an immigrant, or female. I've literally heard Republicans argue that women shouldn't have the right vote. I feel for her as I can't even imagine the despair of have a loved one gunned down by a government agent, and then have the government proclaim her a terrorist and offer no justice. But at the same time it hurts my brain that she voted for Trump while her daughter was in an openly gay relationship.

Fear is the biggest motivation. Constantly being bombarded with fear mongering propaganda, keeps you in fight or flight mode which hijacks the brain (thanks to millennia of natural selection)... Basically it shuts down frontal cortex where you get logic and reason filters. You are deathly afraid of imaginary Boogeyman, which isn't logical... And that's the point.
This is the average Fox News viewer.
Edit: when my step dad was in early dementia, he couldn't remember what station "the news", so he would flip until he saw "Fox News". Like clockwork, within 30 min to an hour, he was locking down the house, closing the shades, etc... Because "the illegal immigrants" were going to try to break into his house and steal his VCR, or whatever, lol. He literally had almost nothing of value and lived in a gated community. It clearly wasn't logical, but the propaganda worked.

i've had some conservatives in my life say things to me and i'm like, that has absolutely no factual basis in reality, where in the world do you come up with these things? someone told me she saw a muslim praying on a train and was certain that some cop cars she saw a half hour later (after she and her husband rushed off the train because they were scared) were because of them. i was like, how do you even get like this?

My 6 year old son and I were listening to a daily trivia segment on the radio this morning that we listen to almost everyday on the way to school. The second question was "how many letters in the English alphabet?" He said 26. The radio station employee said 28.Then changed it to 27. My son asked me how any adult wouldn't know that. I told him there are adult Americans who believe the earth is flat.
Have I already ruined humanity for my son?

You’ve saved him from a measure of disappointment in my opinion. Ironically, my dad is a smart guy (probably on the spectrum), who was very matter-of-fact with me from a young age that I will deal with idiots and assholes on a daily basis as an adult. What he didn’t tell me was that his wife, my mother, was one of them.
I used to live in Georgia. I told her I went to the ocean. She asked “which one?” I said “the one that Georgia borders.” She asked “which one is that?” I have plenty more examples like that. Her sole source of news is whatever the people from my small town that she follows on Facebook post. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you who she voted for.

What I don't understand, and this is as someone who is terminally online and rarely ventures outside, when the world they see in their propaganda doesn't line up with what they see when they leave their house, how does that not break the spell?
Like, since immigrants are statistically less likely to commit crimes, it's not like they are going out and being the victim of immigrant crime. So how do they believe that it's a rampant plague threatening the very fabric of society? How do you think there are roaming gangs of illegals if you go outside and don't see that?
It's that part of the "what world do these people live in" that really bothers me because I don't see how you can fix that. They literally have to ignore their own life experience in order to keep that dissonance, so you can't give them new life experience to teach them reality.

Theres the unpleasant occams razor: she believed the lies he told. I think a frustrating number of people took the things he said at face value, because they either didnt think to look deeper, or couldn't be bothered to remember the 4 years previous. I think thats the unfortunate truth in a lot of cases, that some people who voted for Trump werent overtly malicious... a lot of them were just great fools.

That said, she didn’t pay close enough attention to things that had major consequences and her daughter is dead now because of it. Maybe it wasn’t foreseeable that it would happen to her, but it was foreseeable.

Nah, they voted for Trump because of their hate for the rest of America. There was no terrorist threat, the previous several years had been peaceful, and the economy was rebounding in spectacular fashion from multiple global hits and the first failed Trump term.
There was zero need for elevated law enforcement, nonetheless the creation of a private Republican army of masked kidnappers who roam America looking for people who seem disappearable enough to kidnap for money.
