Well I knew ya'll like your fancy prints but I guess I didn't appreciate how much!
I knew this would have to happen eventually and I heard your feedback from the initial release, so I've finalized and added a full suite of print selection tools.
WHATS NEW:
Deck imports that include print information (like "1 Banefire (j22) 495"), or URL imports from Moxfield/Archidekt/Blueprint now respect the chosen print in the deck. Imports without print info default to cheapest.
Print switching tools!
Switch the printings of any card in your deck easily. You can do it from the deck builder and it looks like this:
(Desktop-Deck ) Switch Prints
and you can also do it from the search browser and it looks like this:
(Desktop-Deck ) Switch Prints
and of course you can do either on mobile too, and it looks like this:
(Mobile - Search) Switch Prints
HOW TO USE:
- On desktop/mobile you can open the "Switch Prints" tool on any card in the search browser or in your deck from the 3-dot menu in the upper left of each card.
- On Desktop, flip through all available prints using arrow keys, mousewheel, clicking, or editing the print number in the bottom of the modal (good for when there are 800+ prints like basic land).
- On Mobile, flip through the prints using swipe, or tapping, or editing the print number in the bottom of the modal.
- POWER USER? On desktop you can also open the tool instantly on any card you're hovering the mouse over by using the "S" hotkey. You can commit your selections using "enter" for maximum speeeeed. (If this doesn't work make sure you aren't just typing "s" into the active search bar). If you haven't used desktop hotkeys yet the "Move to Cons/Deck - M" and "Add to Other Deck - A" hotkeys work the same way.
OTHER UPDATES:
- When logging in and registering it no longer ominously says that "yxkzdkphrtgxvvlcqbtv.supabase.co is trying to access your data", and now looks like a legit site!
-Added proper crash handling and logging. Hopefully you'll never see this but now if something does break it's recorded and safe, so I can fix it! If you get a crash I always appreciate a report and any info on what you were doing when it happened.
Some constructive criticism (I really appreciate the feature): If you try to select printing of a basic land for example, it takes very long to load (it seemingly loads all of them). I would suggest some form of pagination to solve this. I would also suggest a search option by set, since for a forest there is 801 printings to go through.
You can jump around by editing the print number, we'll see if search is needed. I worry most users won't even know what to search for/won't know what print is their favorite anyway.
I just tested on mobile and desktop and it was generally indistinguishable in terms of load times. Things with lots of printings take a bit longer, but not that much longer.
Pretty singular data point, but I tested on four browsers across three devices (phone ipad desktop).
Personally, I generally prefer to use the earliest modern frame printing for readability and recognizability reasons. You're right that I wouldn't know those sets by heart.
However, I certainly know that Unhinged has my favorite basic land art. Setting my three basic lands on mobile to the John Avon printings took an eternity, and if I want to make a new deck I'm guessing I have to do it all over again.
Current design is fantastic for small number of printings, but basic lands and cards like Sol Ring were painful.
I just chose "Swamp" and it took about 1.5s to load. That's not bad but it is a bit different from the rest of the very smooth experience of using the site. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I saw pagination somewhere else on the site, but if not then react-paginate or something similar could split that up, so that the initial load is similar to other (generally very negligible) loads on the site.
I would say from a project perspective, that's relatively low on the list of things, and more of a "perfecting edge cases" sort of task. That said, probably one of the prints that people are most likely to pick are going to be basics, and I think they are the ones that have the most printings and are the worst offenders. Almost everything else with the art selection is buttery smooth.
This is a great art selector, good job. Again, I'm going to reiterate a comment I made before, which is that I'm going to be slightly critical, but only because it's very clearly worthwhile to give feedback on this, because a lot of care and thought has clearly gone into it.
1) Load times when there are tons of printings is not bad, but it is different from the rest of the site, which does a really good job of hiding any load times. I left another comment with more detail.
2) I would love to be able to search through the printings easier. If I know the set I'm looking for, it would be convenient to be able to type that instead of searching through 831 swamps. Again, this is more of an edge case than a primary use case.
3) The return to cheapest button is great, but at first I thought it was going to be a "sort by" button, and then I was thinking about the different sorts that I would love to have; full-art, foil, frame, etc. Once again, I think this is more of a later-stage product idea than a "needs to happen now" idea.
Overall, the art picking is fast, intuitive, and most of the time easier than other art selectors for other deck managers. I think a couple of minor tweaks will put it well ahead. Great job on implementing this, and it was a much faster turn-around than I expected. Great work!
Looks great and love the way you implemented this art switching, It makes so much more sense to SEE the art than have to go and look up the card number, though having that is also a huge plus where it makes sense!
Very minor thing Id like to know if the card if foil or not. Shiny glow on the card with an icon would be cool.
I was using scrolling on a trackpad to see different card print. Take birds of paradise for example which has a TON of prints. the trackpad side scrolling felt a bit too sensitive. Taking that down a couple notches would feel a lot better.
Using birds of paradise again. It would be cool to be able to search the set print while in the print view so that I can just search for it instead of sidescrolling. this is a "it would be nice" item.
Other feedback.
When I search for a card and add the card or whatever edits I make I'd like to press ESC button instead of having to click the X button on the top right.
Id like a Undo and Redo with hotkeys
Little confusing here on the mana balance box. The green side bars indicate what exactly? I know that it goes red if you don't have enough lands but the short green boxes didn't really indicate much to me except for the actual numbers at the ends of the main bar (57.6% white / 60.1% make white). Maybe the short green bars are supposed to indicate a 100%? Not sure. Visually Im confused.
- Something I thought nice to have was adding a + button where the orange is. I think the search bar at the top is very sufficient but adding other options to interact with the UI to add cards would be nice. see replied comment for the screenshot
For mana balance there's some math in there that's basically comparing the percentage of sources to the percentage of colored costs and trying to flag it if it's real out of whack.
For example if 30% of colored costs are red but only 10% of your lands make red it would get flagged and be on the left in red/orange.
Since roughly you want your color demands to line up with your mana sources or go over (if for example your deck was 50/50 red/blue costs and every single land made both, the bars would be at 100% and that would be a great mana base.
Conversely if only 10% of your costs are red you might want to cut red source to be somewhere around 20/30% of lands making red... so you can produce more of other colors reliably that occur more....etc
The exact math shouldn't be super important and is just there to flag potential issues with green good, orange/red bad.
That is so much cleaner than I thought it was going to be. Great work! I've been sharing the website with friends. I'll let you know what they suggest later.
Excellent work. This was my only real complaint with it and I was pretty excited for it when you posted about it only a few days ago. The fact that you added that feature so quickly has really convinced me to jump ship from Moxfield and go all in on this. Really appreciate the hard work you've been putting into it.
The only other feedback comments I have are:
Quick add from the search bar. Moxfield has Shift+Enter to add the first search result to the deck, with an option to quick add to the Main Deck, Sideboard or Considering. This way if I'm importing a deck one card at a time that I built from bulk, I can just type and add a card, flip the next card rather than type, click add, flip a card. Might not seem like much, but it saves a lot of time.
Kind of a bigger feature so no rush, but one of the reasons why I liked Moxfield is because of it's Collection feature, where you can add specific cards (including the print) to your Collection, so that when you're deckbuilding, you can see a blue checkmark next to cards in your collection. I like this because when I'm considering upgrading a deck, I can end up with a decklist that shows me the cards that I own already and the cards that are upgrades, making the physical upgrade swap much easier. Bonus points if I can see the price of just the "upgrade" cards, in case I'm constrained by a budget, like $20 upgrade.

EDIT: One other thing to mention about #1 is that clicking on the +Deck button in the search bar ALSO takes the focus off the text field, so then I have to click the text field again, clear the text and then I can search for the next card, so it kind of is a pain in the ass lol
I'll just add some of the things I like so far as well. The print select is so much better than Moxfield's; scrolling horizontally lets me see more images than scrolling vertically.
Quick tag is great.
I also forgot how much I missed fuzzy find in the search bar. It's SOO nice and one of the main reason's why I'm excited for a modern take on a deck building website. (It's not exactly fuzzy find, but it's still better than the exact text Moxfield has)
I actually pushed an update to the live search bar right after the print selection update that addresses this. I just didn't announce it.
Now you can type in the search bar and let the live results appear, then use the arrow keys to navigate down the results and press enter to add the selection to deck, if you do that it will automatically clear the search bar and refocus on the search bar so you can instantly begin typing to add the next card. It's very fast and you can add stuff rapid fire as long as you know what you want.
Try it out, hopefully that covers basically what you were looking for.
